Overview

Wrapped in Rain by Charles Martin

"Tucker, I want to tell you a secret." Miss Ella curled my hand into a fist and showed it to me.

"Life is a battle, but you can't fight it with your fists. You got to fight it with your heart."

An internationally famous photographer, Tucker Mason has traveled the world, capturing things other people don’t see. But what Tucker himself can’t see is how to let go of the past and forgive his father.

On a sprawling Southern estate, Tucker and his younger brother, Mutt, were raised by their housekeeper, Miss Ella Rain, who loved the motherless boys like her own. Hiring her to take care of Waverly Hall and the boys was the only good thing their father ever did.

When his brother escapes from a mental hospital and an old girlfriend appears with her son and a black eye, Tucker is forced to return home and face the agony of his own tragic past.

Though Miss Ella has been gone for many years, Tuck can still hear her voice—and her prayers. But finding peace and starting anew will take a measure of grace that Tucker scarcely believes in.

The book starts off telling the story of a mental patient Mutt (the younger brother) until he escapes, then Tucker Rain (the older brother) takes over the story. The transition between storytellers was seamless though. It's a story about two boys who grew up with an abusive father and relied on Miss Ella for protection. Miss Ella was a deeply religious black woman who was a combination housekeeper/nanny. Although she wasn't allowed to take the boys to church, she manages to instill in them the love of God. It's a question as to which character is the main character because they each play such an important role. The story wouldn't be complete without any of them. The author does and excellent job of weaving this story and bringing it to it's comforting conclusion. This book reads more like a biography than a fictional book. Although it started off slow, I really enjoyed the book and would recommend it to friends.

This is the sixth Charles Martin book I’ve read, and while I loved them all, Wrapped in Rain is my favorite. I do believe it’s the best book I’ve ever read. What a beautiful story of coming home. What an inspiration to encourage and promote prayer and forgiveness. The character development is brilliant. Charles Martin broaches the subject of mental illness by introducing Matthew Mason. Matthew, aka Mutt, is a character you cannot help but love and cheer for. The reader is transformed back and forth between childhood memories and the present setting of the book and it is a spectacular journey. I truly don’t have adequate words to describe how wonderful this book is.

Charles Martin has a tremendous understanding of relationships. He writes in a way that keeps you on the edge of your seat all through his books. This beautiful book shows the hatred of those whose only desire is for those things they can accumulate. It reveals the heart of those who understand that relationships are what matters in this life. What you live with as a child will be taken with you into your adulthood, the good, the bad, the wounds and the healing power of love. It will cause you to ponder how you will live and how you will treat those who are a part of your daily life.

'Wrapped in Rain' is quite a difficult story for me to read. It is highly emotional and made me think that no matter how one tries to escape the past, they can never do that. One can never be free of their past, unless they're brave enough to face it. One thing I learned from this book is about unwavering faith will save one's soul. Prayers too. Overall, it's not a bad book to read. I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars. I received an ARC of this book from Thomas Nelson Publisher and I was not required to write a positive review for this book.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. I read all the time. This book had everything I want in a book. I couldn't put it down. I gave it to my daughter to read. She doesn't read much at all. She told me later she was spell bound by the book and couldn't stop reading. This is the first review I have ever written, but could not miss the chance to encourage you to read this book.

This book is a wonderful story of a man who learns to live and love because of the devotion of a woman. It is not a romantic story, rather it is the tale of selfless love given to two young boys by a woman who gives them her love and devotion. It is the tale of redemption, forgiveness and challenge. This story is well-written and touched my heart and soul. It is a great read for individuals and our book club LOVED it! I highly recommend it for yourself and as a gift to dear familly and friends.

It was suggested to me to read this book by a book store worker in a small town in South Carolina. She had told me that this author was fantastic and I thought..."yeah oh sure, aren't they all?" She was not lying. The moment I picked it up I could not put it down and that is something for me. I got so involved with the characters and I could not believe that one of them could be so humanly cruel until you look to history, the world today, et. Now, I can't wait to read the other novels by Charles Martin. I just hope he keeps writing and writing them!!!

My daughter devoured this book, then insisted I read it. We both fell head over heels into the characters and their story. It¿s the first time I¿ve ever finished the last page of a fiction book ¿ and immediately wanted to turn back and start over. Wrapped in Rain is a keeper, so get your friends their own copy.

Wrapped in Rain & The Dead Don't Dance: what a great beginning for this author. Colorful character depictions, descriptive surroundings, and a storyline that's vigorous and novel and captivating, make these books 'must reads', but make sure you have some time to spare, because once you pick 'em up, you won't put them down.

Once I started reading this book, I had to finish it and as soon as possible. Every chapter was meaningful. The writer puts you in the middle of the characters lives and skillfully involves you in their suffering. The heroin, who has died, is lovingly remembered and her lessons of life, love, and faith live on in the lives of the characters. Your legacy is what you have taught and how you have lived, not the material stuff.
