Write It Right by Ambrose Bierce

The author's main purpose in this book is to teach precision in writing; and of good writing (which, essentially, is clear thinking made visible) precision is the point of capital concern. It is attained by choice of the word that accurately and adequately expresses what the writer has in mind, and by exclusion of that which either denotes or connotes something else. As Quintilian puts it, the writer should so write that his reader not only may, but must, understand.

About the Author

Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce (born June 24, 1842; died sometime after December 26, 1913) was an American editorialist, journalist, short story writer, fabulist, and satirist. Today, he is probably best known for his short story "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" and his satirical lexicon The Devil's Dictionary. His vehemence as a critic, his motto "Nothing matters" and the sardonic view of human nature that informed his work all earned him the nickname "Bitter Bierce".

I have had this book since the 1970's. I still have it and will keep reading it. It reminds me of some the things I get careless about. I think he has another good book which is excellent for school children. The name is "Read it Right". This book is great too. EAW20

(Learn about the dragons at 'info', just change around the words.)
The wind blowing...
I was lost.
But I was not
At the time I had not hatched,
But here is my story...
In a land of war and fear and pain,
lived a beautiful SoaringSea dragoness...
she had fallen in love with a SoaringFire dragon...
So that is how I was made.
But I did not know.
So here is my adventure...
<_>
An egg lay, lost in a desolate plain of ice. Antartica, it was called. How she got there she did not know, why she was there she did not know, when she came there she did not know. Yet she knew, she was inside of a shell.
And it was her time to come out.
Pushing, scratching. Ever squacking.
*Why oh why, must it be me?* Her thoughts were filled with sorrow, her scales filled with pain. *What am I? I am no bird, no lizard, no bat. I am not a cat.* Pain and sorrow was what she felt, and she knew know, it was time to break free.
She woke from the slumber of her egg, and found herself surrounded by cold and ache.
*They must be SoaringIces, but why am I here? I am no SoaringIce, that much is clear.* The fear built up inside her innocent soul, hunger. Suddenly voices, a many strong voices, roared in surprise.
"That isn't a SoaringIce!"
"Is it a SoaringSea? Or a SoaringFire?"
"Neither. Both. I don't know!"
"It is a dragonet. This is all that matters. It is a dragonet." A strong, feminine voice flew down.
"Queen Glacier!" They all roared at once, bowing to their queen. *What an introduction. I haven't lived twenty minutes and I've already met a queen.* Thought the dragonet.
"I shall name you BurningSea." Said the queen, bowing awkwardly to the dragonet. The entire room gasped and bowed, realizing queens only bow to an object of great importance.
"I respect the name, but I'm not THAT important, am I?" Squeaked the dragonet in surprise.
"BurningSea speaks. No SoaringIce dragonet could catch on this fast." She showed humor in her eyes.
Then, almost as soon as she came, she had flown away. BurningSea had a name, and now she had no shame. But what was a flame doing here? She knew she was not a SoaringIce, so was she a SoaringFire? Why did they leave her here? And if she was a SoaringFire, why wasn't she too cold? She needed to find the SoaringFire kingdom, at that moment she realized she had gills! Was she a SoaringSea? She could shoot fire and water, breath in the ocean, swim in lava, light on fire, she was a mix breed! Between a SoaringSea and a SoaringFire!
<_>
<_>
Will be continued...
