Overview

Vermont folksinger Louise Taylor knows the blues. Her comfort with blues phrasing is clear from WRITTEN IN RED's opening track, "Cherry Tree," in which her husky voice and smoldering guitar stand out, through "His Hands," a deep blue investigation of sensuality. "Stubborn as a Gun" traces a sadder story of lovers stuck in old patterns. Taylor, whose songs have chronicled her travels since her teenaged street-singing days, has made several trips to Ireland since her last record. Taylor explains that the Celtic mood picked up on her visits has inspired this set, finding common cause in the Irish and Appalachian storytelling traditions. Taylor applies her ability to limn emotion with a few words to the mountain story of "Miriam Bell" and to "Written in Red," a heartfelt vision of two people at the ending of a relationship. Joannie Madden of Cherish the Ladies lends her Celtic flair on several tracks. Fans of Bonnie Raitt and Debbie Davies should be sure to check out Taylor's WRITTEN IN RED. --Kerry Dexter
