This is the second trade paperback for XO Manowar released by VEI following their successful re-imagining of the old Valiant titles. Full disclosure, I was a big Valiant fan back in the 1990's, and have been basically waiting for over a decade for these characters to come back to life. As I indicated in my previous reviews, this is not a simply re-telling of the old stories. These books are a re-imagining of the old concepts, with many of the same basic foundations. In this XO Manowar title, Aric returns back to Earth following his escape from his captors - the Alien Vine. In this compendium, we begin to see the depth to which the Vine have infiltrated the world governments. We are also introduced to Ninjak, a character from the old series. In the new series, Ninjak is a mercenary, a gun (er...sword?) for hire. I felt this compendium moved much faster then the previous set of books. You begin to get the idea the story is moving in a definite direction. While it still moves at a slower pace than I would like, you feel like something is actually happening - not just building. The artwork is great as well, it really enhances the story. It does seem like there is a lot left up in the air at the end of this arc - I am not sure if that was done purposefully or not - and I hope that the characters introduced here simply don't vanish. The story itself is a little predictable (characters start off as enemies, fight, end up with uneasy truce) so I feel that could have been improved somewhat. If you like comics, even if you weren't a fan of the old series, this is a good series to follow. There is some action, and it is easy to jump aboard and catch up on what has happened previously.
All the quality of the first book is here, with an even bigger, epic and thrilling storyline than the first book. If you're into quality comics or sci fi, this is a MUST read - you'll be glad you didn't miss out.
