About the Author

Widely esteemed as the greatest writer in the English language, William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was an actor and theatrical producer in addition to writing plays and sonnets. Dubbed "The Bard of Avon," Shakespeare oversaw the building of the Globe Theatre in London, where a number of his plays were staged, the best-known of which include Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and Macbeth. The First Folio, a printed book of 36 of his comedies, tragedies, and history plays, was published in 1623.

The Yale Shakespeare has gorgeous, easy-to- read type, good introductions, smart-looking scene dividers. It has comprehensive footnotes and endnotes. Complete Plays and Poetry. I liked it better than the Riverside Shakespeare, where the lines were scrunched up on the page to conserve space. With the Yale, the lines can breathe easier.

This sounds promising with the great (old) reviews, but it seems they are reviewing Shakespeare generally. This e-book is incomplete, full of errors, and basically useless. I'm deleting it from my library.

My download to nook of The Yale Shakespeare included only the first part of Henry VI, so I have already deleted it. If you are seeking a complete one-volume Shakespeare collection, this is not it, although the editorial review and the customer review sections indicate that it is. I didn't go to the free list just to save money but because there are no other complete eBook editions listed at B&N, something they will cover in the future, no doubt. Very disappointed. Patience (is a blessing).

This was a great compulation of plays ever written! Since I'm still new to Shakespeare's plays I plan on having and reading The Yale Shakespeare for many years to come!

I picked this up recently and was quite impressed with the workmanship and skill with which "The Yale Shakespeare" has been compiled. So large as to dwarf even a church bible, this book seems to be built for display-- but do not be fooled into believing it is looks alone. Beyond the outward appearance, a scholarly and intelligent editing job has been done. Each play is annotated, prefixed by a lengthy examination, and reprinted to exacting specifications. Very impressive.

Yale Shakespear was one of the best books for shakesperian lovers. It was worth getting! It contained a list of the actors in his plays, and has copies of things from the man himself. the book also contains all his plays, sonnets, poems, and a brief history behind the man and the plays.

Beautiful book: however this edition isn't standard. When compared to the Oxford, Dorset or Riverside editions the text varies considerably, which can be disconcerting, especially if one is use to the others. Apparently this is a compilation of several editorial preferences, some of which are very archaic. This is best a comparative reference than an universal standard; though again, it is of exceptional value and construction.

This is clearly the best edition of the complete Shakespeare. Its only defect is that it is large and heavy. It has big type, great annotations, and good introductions to each play or poem. It is a beautiful book, especially under the dust jacket. It is bound in cloth, and has the Yale insignia engraved into the frond. On the back of the jacket, there is the cover of the first folio of Shakespeare's works.
