This could be The Milepost for Yellowstone.
The Expedition Guide is a remarkable resource for the new or returning visitor of Yellowstone National Park. The text, and audio-visual (CD & DVD) materials provide lots of information that ensures that travelers have the foundation of a rewarding vacation. Of course, in our electronic world, many of us have become tethered to our Smartphone or I-Pad, whatever and we think we don't need old fashioned references like paper books. However, the remoteness that is the Yellowstone wilderness precludes the use of these sophisticated devices within most areas of the park. So don't count on those tools as your sole resource. The DVD will perform on your Windows operating system laptop, and the CD will play in your vehicle's player. Watch and listen to them at home and then take them with you. I've been to Yellowstone several times before the major trip I will take there this summer. This guide will be the ONE that I carry in my luggage. I see that one reviewer was not pleased that the book relates stories of the tragedies that have occurred in Yellowstone due frequently to carelessness. Yellowstone can be a dangerous place. Like the tiger in "Life of Pi", many beautiful experiences possess lots of danger. It's unusual for travel guides - that are promoting a destination, to evert speak of the dangers. I appreciated these stories.
We bought this book to do a little homework prior to our trip to the park last summer. It is wonderfully put together in the order you would most likely tour the park and has beautiful photos and great information about the park itself including history, geological info, wildlife and even lodging info. When we got there, we were able to plan our itinerary and already knew much about what we were seeing. We did not use the CD and did not buy the book for that purpose. If you are purchasing to use the included CD as an audio tour, this is likely not for you since the CD isn't really a robust offering to use on your trip, but if you are looking for a beautiful book that will teach you about the park, then this is a great choice.
The book is well done with wonderful pictures. A great coffee table book that will give you an overview of the park and what you will see. I bought it so I could create a detailed driving itinerary which I thought the audio tour CD would help create. However, the CD is just a rehash of what is already in the book and not a tour guide. I found it of no value as a driving guide - only an audio version of the book itself.
We found this guidebook to be a very useful all around guide to the park. That said, the audio tour is COMPLETELY INAPPROPRIATE. There are tracks that describe in gory detail what happens to folks when they encounter wildlife or fall into the thermal features. There was no warning and my children were completely traumatized. The company still will not return my calls or letters.
