Children's Literature - Natalie Gurr
It is the late fifteenth century in Mesoamerica and the Aztecs are on the attack! The Aztecs arrived in Mexico around 1200. They originally worked as slaves and servants, but eventually rose up to overpower their masters and conquer the surrounding lands. Macdonald uses the most infamous aspect of Aztec culture, human sacrifices, to spin a story about what it might have been like to be chosen as a sacrifice. A young nobleman is captured by the Aztecs and taken to Tenochtitlan where he is eventually sacrificed. Students will enjoy the sardonic humor and gruesome history that Macdonald presents. Bright, colorful illustrations accompany every page and keep the book from turning too heavy. The wording is simple enough for children to follow, and engaging enough to hold their interest. This account is an excellent resource for those who are teaching world history. The book includes a simplified timeline of Aztec history, a helpful glossary, a full index and extra information about Aztec gods and other famous people involved in Aztec history. The "You Wouldn't Want to Know..." series is a fun way to get kids excited about history. Reviewer: Natalie Gurr

This series is funny, with lots of colorful to keep my students interested. Struggling readers can be enticed to "research" topics and gladly contribute information to group projects. I'm in the process of collecting all titles that pertain to my state standards.
