Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This "high interest" book is written for students whose reading ability is considerably below grade level. It profiles several adolescents who have transcended various physical limitations to become champion athletes. Lisa, for example, overcame childhood paralysis to become a wheelchair racer and win several gold medals. Kyle, born with stumps instead of arms and legs, became a top wrestler in high school. The subject matter is compelling and these biographical capsules hold the reader's attention. At the end of the book the author asks about the qualities that make people champions: "Is it courage and confidence? How about outlook? Maybe strength and determination? Which of these qualities do you have?" Perhaps by answering these questions readers will understand that they, too, can be outstanding. This is part of the "High Five Reading" series—Reading Level Grades 1-2. 2005, Red Brick Learning, Ages 7 to 10.
