Young Heroes of the Confederacy by Debra Smith

The Civil War is a topic well-known to readers of all ages. However, it is the bravery and strength of the young men and women that is often forgotten. Born into a set of circumstances beyond their control, these children of the 1860s faced the ultimate test of character and courage. Stories of courage in the face of starvation and death, told through biographies of young people from each of the Confederate states, reveals just what kind of heroes they were.

About the Author

Debra West Smith's earliest memories involve a fascination with both horses and books. She spent the first part of her life with her grandparents in Natchitoches, Louisiana. There, she enjoyed a quiet, serene life where she spent most of her time developing a love for reading. Inspiration for the Hattie Marshall series came from stories the author's grandfather used to tell about his younger days in East Texas.
