Thomas Hamilton served as an officer in an infantry regiment during the Peninsular War. Upon retiring from the army in 1818, he quickly established himself as one of the leading writers for Blackwood's Magazine, and was an acquaintance of both Sir Walter Scott and William Wordsworth. Maurice Lindsay is a poet, broadcaster, and scholar.
