Youth Rebellion Movies

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 9-12-- Juvenile delinquents, bold troublemakers, motorcycle nomads, and rock `n ' rollers are the symbols of youth rebellion in this collection based on the movies. The six films documented are diverse, offering the Marlon Brando performance in the now-tame The Wild One (1954), through violent, cult favorites such as Easy Rider (1969) and the satirical and controversial Heathers (1989). Issues that lead the young people to revolt vary, but the common theme tends to consider adult authority figures as the problem rather than the solution. The racism and poverty of Blackboard Jungle (1955) are mindfully contrasted against the white middle-class misunderstandings in Rebel without a Cause (1955). Music provides another thread in most of the offerings, and is the center of Rock 'N' Roll High School (1979). This book brings together an unusual combination of movies, but it should be popular with student readers. --Judie Porter, Media Services Center, Portsmouth School Department, RI
