For weeks now, all the children in town have been hiding in trunks, barrels, and basements to avoid becoming the hungry ogre's breakfast. All the children, that is, except one, Zeralda, who lives in a clearing in the woods and doesn't know much about ogres. But then this ogre doesn't know very much about Zeralda, either! When they finally come face to face, marvelously funny things begin to happen.

Disney would have run shrieking in horror from this book, but if you were raised to appreciate weirdness, it's a true gem. Ferocious ogres who actually eat little children, a spunky little girl who fears nothing and domesticates one of the rogues (she is also a gourmet cook...) - it's a hoot, and there is no way brave children will not find it fascinating. Ungerer at his perverse best.
