Twilight. With zombies.
Eighteen-year-old Katie Allred is socially awkward and unpopular at school. The only child of parents who had her right out of high school, Katie is herself about to leave the nest, even though she hardly feels ready.

Katie’s new after-school job at the Zimble Box Corporation draws her into the complex social strata of high school cliques and backstabbing friends in ways she never imagined. Katie soon discovers there’s something very strange about the “in” crowd at school---and about her employer, too. Shortly after starting her new job, the Contagion breaks out, plunging her town and the entire nation into chaos as zombie shadow forces come out into the open, ravaging the streets. Katie goes into hiding and her parents disappear, along with almost everyone else she knows.

But Katie soon discovers she has special powers that help her survive. She’s a Beacon, someone with the innate ability to help zombies produce children. It’s a power her employer — and what little remains of the U.S. government — both want to exploit for their own ends. Not only that, it runs in her family---which has a secret past Katie never knew about until now.

Enter Agent Morehouse of the FBI Special Zombie Control Unit. A reformed zombie working undercover, he suppresses his urge to eat human flesh in order to serve and save humanity. But Agent Morehouse can’t help but be attracted to a Beacon like Katie, and she to him. Even as they fight zombies the world over, they must fight their intense attraction to each other, hoping to keep Katie from suffering Agent Morehouse’s terrible zombie fate.

Twilight with zombies? I had to question if this was the best marketing tag line or not...I am going to have to say not. Twilight had long since grown out of the public spotlight and shifted into the outdated category when this book initially released in 2013, first error. Second error; the book is nothing like Twilight; the only coinciding feature would be a teenage girl, not enough to think this tag would be the big selling point. Regardless, after getting over that hurdle, I dove into the novel with interest. I am a zombie nut. Plain and simple tempt me with a zombie tale and I am going to read it. Zombie Incorporated, has a level of potential, unfortunately it took a long time for the story to reach that point where you truly were drawn into what could come to happen. The character of Katie Allred is intriguing, enough so that you can relate to her. This is the shining aspect of the book. Alas, the first person point of view is the first stumbling point the reader is faced with, and that authors need to be aware; it takes a delicate touch to pull it off for an entire novel. Characters beyond Katie, even Mr. Zimble, are relatively flat and uninteresting. The excessive product placement, brand placement detracts from the overall story being told, and dates the author. Yet, it is the overall plot and flow of the story that leaves the reader stumbling along, like one would expect a zombie too move. Here is another shining spot within the book; the fresh concept for what a zombie can be, unfortunately it doesn't get explored until the very end of the story. The best section of the book comes as Katie must face the world alone after the contagion is released. During this portion of the novel and plot the character grows into an adult. Unfortunately she devolves after this point. Hughes does do a great lead in to the next novel in the series, opening an interesting door. Hopefully the first book in The Katie Allred Zombie Series has enough momentum to lead readers on to the next adventure. RATING:
