Overview

Detox diets are making news as the quickest, easiest way to shed pounds, boost your energy, and get yourself on a wellness track. Popular in the 1970s, cleansing fasts are again all the rage among celebrities like Gisele Bundchen, Gwyneth Paltrow, Stella McCartney, and Madonna.

One of the key advocates of the health benefits of cleansing detoxes is Roni DeLuz, ND, a licensed naturopathic and health practitioner at Martha′s Vineyard Holistic Retreat, part of the renowned Martha′s Vineyard Inn. The idea behind DeLuz′s new detox plan is the belief that the foods we eat (along with the coffee, tea, and alcohol we drink and the air we breathe) contain harmful and toxic substances that accumulate in our bodies and need to be removed in some way. In 21 Pounds in 21 Days, DeLuz offers three different detox programs, including the original and most effective 21-day "MasterFast," which promises a 21-pound weight loss in just three weeks and focuses on detoxification through antioxidants, fasting, stress reduction, and lifestyle changes. Also included in the book are:

∗maintenance plans

∗dozens of easy, delicious recipes

∗real-life tips

∗an extensive glossary of terms

∗a guide to supplements

Meals consist of supplement-laden drinks, herbal teas, thick, delicious vegetable purees, and "live" juices, along with nutritional supplements, vitamins, and enzymes designed to keep the body′s systems stable and its cells nourished while harmful toxins are flushed out. 21 Pounds in 21 Days isn′t just for those looking to lose weight; everyone can benefit from this revolutionary detox diet that results in a clean, refreshed system that functions at its best.

The Martha's Vineyard Diet Detox

Chapter One

Toxic, Unhealthy, and Heavy

America's Rude Awakening

The United States has the best health care system in the world, yet Americans of all backgrounds are having a hard time staying healthy. At least 20 million Americans are chronically ill with conditions that undermine their quality of life and may ultimately lead to their demise...diseases like cancer, diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, hypertension, and kidney and liver failure. Each week, about 80 percent of adults take medication...at least one-third of us down five different drugs...the Institute of Medicine reports. Often, the conditions these medicines treat are caused by our lack of success in maintaining a healthy weight.

Today, over 60 percent of Americans weigh more than their recommended body mass index (BMI), which measures the amount of body fat we carry compared to our height. Sixty-two percent of women and 70 percent of men are overweight, meaning that their BMI is 25 or more (normal is 18.5 to 24.9). Thirty-one percent of men and women are obese. Of course, everyone has different advice for how to slim down. These days, it's almost impossible to figure out whether to eat or avoid carbohydrates; how much protein to consume; whether butter or margarine is better; if fat free also means low calorie; whether foods like red wine, chocolate, and coffee are healthy after all; or if we should sign up for Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, or L.A. Weight Loss. The advice seems to change almost daily.

Most experts tell us that whether we gain or lose weight is determined by the number of calorieswe eat compared to the number of calories we burn. If we want to lose weight, we should consume fewer calories, increase our activity level, or, better yet, do both. But while many Americans try to take weight off, experts now know that traditional weight-reduction dieting does not work. Fewer than 5 percent of dieters succeed in keeping the weight they lost off for five years, according to the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance. A stunning 90 percent of people gain some or all of their weight back, and one-third end up weighing more.

I certainly believe in eating healthy amounts of food and becoming more active, but my experience as a patient, researcher, and healer makes it clear to me that the explanations and approaches toward weight loss based on this approach are incomplete. Scientists are now learning that losing weight is much more complicated than merely balancing calories eaten and burned. We now know that factors as wide ranging as whether we skip breakfast, eat enough healthy foods, get sufficient sleep, have a metabolic disorder, or suffer from intestinal parasites are also part of the equation. These factors and other emerging research on factors affecting weight gain all speak to the importance of living a healthy lifestyle.

The Trouble with Toxins

One of the most significant but least-talked-about factors affecting each individual's weight is the amount of exposure they've had to toxic substances. Noxious materials we encounter in our environment, home, workplace, and food supply are altering our bodies in fundamental and detrimental ways. Of course, everyone knows that certain toxins make us sick. Who isn't aware that cigarette smoke can cause heart disease and cancer...and, as we're now learning, not just in the smoker but also among those who inhale the secondhand fumes? We know that lead poisoning can cause learning disabilities, behavioral problems, and a lower IQ, among other problems. Researchers have recently identified both cigarette smoke and lead as causing one-third of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) cases. Mercury now contaminates large predatory fish like shark, albacore tuna, and mackerel. And toxins like dioxin are not only ubiquitous but a major cause of cancer.

But who knew that poisons like these could mess up our metabolism? Gaining weight is one common but little-known and poorly understood consequence of body processes gone haywire in the presence of poisonous substances. The damage toxins inflict upon us can make it exceedingly difficult...if not impossible...for some people to shed excess pounds. Now don't get me wrong; of course, it's true that many dieters fail because they exercise poor portion control...or don't exercise their bodies at all. But I can't tell you how many people I've worked with who eat surprisingly little, healthy food, yet can barely shed a pound. Lots of people approach weight loss diligently; yet few have long-lasting results. Many repeat dieters sense that something's wrong...for example, they know that their results do not reflect their effort...but since our culture places the responsibility for being overweight on the individual, they wrongly blame themselves for their lack of success. But I'm here to tell you that even if you do sometimes lack self-discipline, and even if you don't always stick to your weight-loss program to the letter, the fact that you're fat may not be your fault! You may be a victim of toxins.

Fortunately, we can all take steps to reduce our body's toxic load. Detoxifying our bodies can help us improve our health...including preventing, controlling, and even healing from chronic and life-altering diseases like high cholesterol, hypertension, and diabetes. As it detoxifies, the body sheds excess weight. In this book you will learn how to lose weight in a way that helps you keep unwanted pounds off and helps you transition into the healthier lifestyle you may have desired.

Since you're reading this book, I probably don't need to warn you about the dangers of factory smoke or tell you to go inside when the truck spraying insecticide drives through your neighborhood. But not all the toxins we are exposed to are delivered in a way that is so obvious. In fact, most noxious ingredients appear to be so harmless that we have them in our homes, use them on our bodies, and even eat them every day. Ever wonder why you can't stand the smell of bleach? Why you are supposed to paint only in a well-ventilated room? Why you aren't supposed to get weed killer on your hands? Because they contain ingredients that the body can't tolerate.

    Lets all cleanse our bodies.

I have heard about Dr. Ron's Detox through the interent. I bought the book and thought that it was well written. I have done the detox with a friend one time and had great results (it does work). The energy I experienced was unbelievable. I was able to walk for miles and not feel tired. The plus of the detox is while your cleansing out your body you do lose weight I lost 22 pounds. Finally, let me say that I am so glad that there is a book out there that puts us in the right direction to cleanse and lose the weight. Cheers to you Dr. Roni for a job well done.

As one who believes in 'some of' the benefits of periodic fasting, I think most fasts have merit. When you stop bombarding your digestive system with food, when you stop overloading your liver with toxins, your body has a chance to heal itself. I've had little wounds heal faster when I go on a fast. Your vision improves, your mental fog is gone, you feel a high. All good things. But ladies and gents, there¿s a HUGE disconnect between fasting for health and fasting for healthy fat loss. The former is a realistic goal. That latter is a setup for disaster. I say fat loss because that¿s the only weight you want to lose. Bone, muscle, organs, they're all healthy tissue. You don¿t want to lose any of those 3 on a fat loss program. Unfortunately, you will on a fast. You¿ll lose a good amount of fat, no question. As someone who's done his share of fasting research, you can expect to lose up to 2 pounds of fat per day on a fast. You'll lose even more total pounds 'I personally lost 30 lbs on a 13-day herbal tea & supplement fast'. Let's say, for example, you fast for 21 days. Depending on the type of fast, you'll probably lose somewhere between 14-50 lbs 'an estimate, of course'. That¿s incredible!! But at what cost? Unfortunately you¿ll also be losing plenty of healthy bone & tissue. That¿s unacceptable for long-term fat loss. The only reason it's reasonable to use a plan like this to lose weight is if you have a high school reunion coming up soon 'or something of the like'. It's not a long-term answer though. Anyone who looks at this book as a means to permanent weight 'fat' loss is disillusioned. It¿s not going to happen. The only way you¿ll maintain the fat loss you lost on a fast is to continue to eat no processed foods once your fast is finished. You basically have to not eat much. EVER AGAIN. If you can do that, more power to you. It probably won't happen though. All these reveiwers saying, 'I'm so excited! I've lost 13 lbs in 8 days!' Of course you did! You're not eating!! Come back on here after 3 months and let us know if the weight is still off. It won't be. It won't be for Robin Quivers and it won't be for you. I mean, jeez, Robin Quivers herself used to tout The Master Cleanser fast. She lost over 70 lbs on it, and became a believer. Guess what, she gained the weight back! She will with this too. We're obsessed in this country with the next new weight loss fad. It's tough because there's so much information out there. It's really confusing. We want to believe the DEFINITIVE plan is out there. And when a celebrity lends their face/voice to a product, look out!! It's even worse. Remember Oprah having Michael & Mary Dean Eades'sp?' on her show back in '99? They're the authors of 'The Carbohydrate Addict's Lifespan Program,' among others. Everyone was excited because they were losing 10 lbs in a week. It was water weight. That diet came and went. Many others preceded and followed. This is no different. There are no shortcuts out there. Sure, some programs are better for you than others 'everybody is different', but most programs will work for most people. There are plenty of good programs out there. Body For Life. 5 Factor Fitness. The Zone. Basically anything that gets you off processed junk and has you eating healthy foods is good. It's not sexy, but it's the truth. Lastly, all of this says nothing of the fact that you¿re supposed to buy a $200 kit from the author to aid you on your fast. Anytime there¿s a program 'self-help, diet, money maker' that requires you or encourages you to buy their expensive products, you have to take the program with a grain of salt. That¿s snake oil salesmanship, and it goes back to the beginning of time. Wake up people!

Another diet book of junk science

The first indicator that this book is junk is the ND designation at the end of the author¿s name. The abbreviation ¿ND¿ is for Naturopathic Doctor, a profession that is based on nothing but pseudoscience. Naturopaths believe in the practice of Detoxing and colonics both discredited treatments, and Homeopathy another discredited theory. Homeopathy believes that if you dilute a real drug in water to the point it no longer exist the water picks up the qualities of the drug. Most of the claims by the author are baseless and just scientifically wrong an example is that frozen vegetables have less nutritional value than fresh. Most frozen vegetables have in fact a higher level of nutrition than fresh because they are frozen just hours after being picked thus retaining the vitamin levels and in fresh vegetables the vitamins and minerals degrade over time. All fresh vegetables loose vitamins over time it just basic organic chemistry. Loosing weight and improving health is relatively simple, exercise more and eat less. We all know what foods are healthy and which ones are junk do not waste your money and time on this piece of junk.

My name is Marge I'm 70 years old and my daughter Laurie is 42. We decided to buy this book and try the detox. We are on day 7 and have lost 7 pounds as promised--we have tried every diet known. So far, we are not hungry and feel and look great. WE did try the colonic --boy were we blown away by what we witness---I'm going back for a series. We tried the coffee enema's -- we feel like running a race.. WE never felt better in our lives. Thank you to the authors for saving our lifes. Everyone should give their body this gift at least once in their life. Marge, Boston

I think people should notice that, most importantly the author is a Naturopathic Doctor. It should be common sense for people to realize that if we give the body what it needs, and stop putting into it, those things that are harmful, then we will not have the majority of the physical and mental problems that plague many of us. This IS proven science. As a scientist, working in hospitals that have treated adults, and now children, we see it everyday. And most amazing to me, is seeing that the people working in these places, (that have had to learn in school and on the job, about how the body really does function) they too believe these same principles. First hand experience concerns my joints. The pain I had for months, not being able to hardly stand after sitting, not being able to walk with full range of motion, not being able to lift my leg when driving 'without using my hands to help lift it', not even being able sit comfortably in most positions. After less than one week of eating these foods: those that eliminate toxins, anti-inflammatory foods, healthy, non-toxic foods, and especially not putting harmful foods into my body, it was amazing. Without expecting the change, I was suddenly walking normally, able to exercise, as if there never had been a problem. Now, with the severity of my hip pain, when I went to the doctor, because I seriously thought I must have injured it, he had x-rays taken, MRI, gave me medicine to minimize the inflammation (NSAIDS), and medicine for pain. And still, nothing found wrong with it and nothing found to eliminate the pain and discomfort. Even physical therapy did not improve it. And yet, just this simple, basic, eating what we should, and stopping the harmful foods and drinks, complete relief was almost instantaneous. So, why do medical doctors not ask their patients these questions? What do you eat and drink each day? How much sleep? How much and what types of exercise? What forms of stress relief do you practice daily? Then instead of prescribing all these 'bandages' that only patch up the damage we do, they could instead, prescribe: -eat these foods, daily -do not eat these foods -pick one or more of these anti-stress activities each day -these exercises, this often -this amount of sleep Call me in one week. If no improvement, then we will schedule an appointment. If improvement, we will see each other in a month and go on from there. This would at least actually benefit most people, most of the time. Why are the people in our culture always wanting to treat their bodies as they want to, no matter how bad it is for them, and then expecting the medical scientist to fix what they broke? Read this book, or others like it. (there are books out there, from M.D's that teach the same thing). Try it. Be amazed at what your body can do.

    This Works!

This book changed my husband and my eating habits. We did the two day clense faithfully. We still use some of the ideas with our regular, but healthier eating habits. We both dropped 10 lbs. and are maintaining it with diet and exercise. We plan to lose 10 more. The clensing makes you feel so much better. I quit coffee and haven't needed a Pepsid complete since. We also went to pretty much dairy free. We use Soy and Almond milk for our milk products. Great book!

7 Pounds 1 inch in Nine Days

Wow!!!. Finally a diet that I can get excited about. I'm going to be very honest, it's not a easy diet, but the results already 'and I'm only on day 9 of 21 days are unbelievable'. All the supplements recommended are delicious and although the juicing takes alittle getting used to, it's not bad either. What I love are the results. They are almost instant. I'm full of energy, my facial lines looks smoother, my hair is so shiny and my unwanted and undesirable cellulite is slowly disappearing. I've had my first colonic this morning, and have been taking care of the additional enema needs on my own every day. It's not pleasant, but I get through it and again the results are amazing. My protruding tummy is flatteneing rapidly for the first time since my kids were born 10 years ago. It's truly amazing that I'm still alive after the incredible amount of gunk that was living inside me and I've only just begun. The coffee enema's are intense. I felt alittle buzz all day, but again, you'd be suprised what comes out of you. Unlike so many health/diet books that are so diffucult to follow, Dr. Roni's writing is easy to follow and quite interesting. I don't usually take the time to review a book, but I'm so excited with my detox/diet beginning results, I thought I'd give this book the high marks it deserves. I can't wait to see what I'll look like in 21 days. A whole new, healthier, thinner, and cleaner me from the inside out. Thanks and best of luck on your personal journey to a whole new you.

This diet DOES work. Women tend to have a problem losing weight and this diet really helped. I lost 18 lbs on it!

    Horrible, just a long ad.

I would avoid this book at all costs. It was just a long advertisement for this woman's website. Filled with testimonials and repeated mentions of her website. So bad. I really regret this purchase.

    GOOD READ NOT GREAT

I WAS INSPIRED TO PURCHASE THIS BOOK FROM THE AWESOME REVIEWS I HAD READ IN MANY OTHER COMMERCIAL MAGAZINES. THERE IS AN ABUNDANCE OF INFORMATION TO EXPLAIN WHY AN INDIVIDUAL GAINS WEIGHT AS WELL AS WHY MANY HAVE DIFFICULTY LOSING WEIGHT. THERE IS ALSO SOME PRACTICAL INFORMATION ABOUT WHAT YOU SHOULD BE DOING TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODY AND WHAT YOU SHOULD NOT BE DOING. IN THE BEGINNING OF THE BOOK IT SAYS THIS IS AN EASY WAY TO START LOSING WEIGHT THAT WILL BE INEXPENSIVE, BUT BY THE END OF THE BOOK YOU REALIZE THAT IS NOT TRUE. IF YOU FOLLOW THROUGH WITH THIS DETOX BE PREPARED TO PAY THE PRICE. TOO MANY TESTIMONIALS. TOO MUCH PROMOTION OF THE AUTHORS' WEBSITE AND CURRENT BUSINESS PROGRAM.

Great concept, difficult to engage in a smaller community

While I believe the concepts presented in Roni's book are completely accurate in order to detox and regulate your body after years of abuse, I found it particularly difficult to engage in the practices in the smaller community in which I reside. It is a great book to begin to understand what we do to our systems day in and day out and how to reverse the damage. Highly recommended read, but I found difficult to place into action.

    Very Disappointing

One long infomercial - attempts to sell detox products. One would have to suspend all activities and go to a retreat or spa to follow the advice contained in this book. I wouldn't buy it.

    I Also Recommend:

This book changed my life - I lost 15lbs in 21 days

I did the Martha's Vineyard Detox Diet, after reading this book, in February 2009. In less than 21 days, I literally changed my life. Yep, I know - that's easy to say. But I've gone on to create a blog site to help others do the same. That's how strongly I feel about it.

If you are tired, exhausted, even mildly overweight and just can't remember the last time you felt like "yourself", then you OWE it to yourself to read this book, and consider how you would LIKE to feel in 6 months, 1 year, 5 years. Do you need to continue feeling bad, or can you do something about it??

I've had 3 kids in the last 6 years, gradually putting on weight with each child. I also work full time, and like lots of other working moms, I have a crazy life. I was continually exhausted - from the moment I had to DRAG myself out of bed, until vegetating in front of the TV at 9 or 10pm at night (if I was lucky that night...).

This book and diet changed my life. I have much more energy. I've been able to get up 1-1.5 hrs earlier each day, do a workout, make my juice, etc, and I've even manged to have enough energy at night to start blogging - I've created a blog site to help others make this life change. Check it out at - http://newhealthydiva.blogspot.com/

This website contains support information, tips and tools, recipes, shopping lists etc. I've just been through this. You can take control of your life too. Sign up at my website and buy Dr. Roni's book. You won't regret it.

Supposedly you can lose an average of a pound a day on this program. I'm not sure why it's called the 'Diet Detox' because the book clearly points out that detoxifying is much different than dieting. This 'program' works by you eating certain foods which detoxify your body. The goal of detoxifying is to cleanse and rest the body. But, since one of the natural consequences of detoxifying is that excess weight falls off, you'll not only have a cleaner running body, but a lighter one as well- as least so says the book. Lots of testimonial abound, which, by the way, is the poorest form of proof that something is effective. The book also offers a 7 day tune-up and a 2 day weekend cleansing as well. After looking at the book, I'm not sure I could bring myself to follow it, so I personally would only recommend it to those readers who are into this kind of thing. For the rest, I'd stick to the old fashioned way of losing weight by eating less and exercising more.

Detox---but WHY ARE YOU DOING IT??

I find nearly every fitness/diet book to have SOME nuggets, and this was no exception. However, after reading, 'Build Your Mind, Your Body Will Follow', I really had to ask myself---why do I want to lose 21lbs in 21days? Don't worry---'21 pounds in 21 days' is a good, worthwhile book. BUT, before you go out and buy yet ANOTHER diet book---buy a book that will help you understand how to motivate yourself, and where your head and mindset should be BEFORE you jump into the next diet. Order 'Build Your Mind, Your Body Will Follow', a VERY easy read, and VERY worthwhile!

    UGH!

Only a hard-core nutritional masochist with serious constipation (literally!) can plow through this how-to-book of grass-juicing, high colonics and enemas. It's not so much a self-help book as a plug for your local colon-cleaning specialist. I'm not so dumb as to think that a mainstream diet would result in that kind of weight loss, but the whole hype for this book is very misleading. A bare minimum of genuine dietary help for the veggie-challenged!
