Editorial Reviews

Albuquerque Review
Raw, engaging, and illuminating R. Shamlian's memoir, A Slice of Apple Pie, impresses upon you his keen sensibilities as man and artist. He tantalizes your taste buds with detail of the oral gratification he perfected over his 30+ years as a pastry chef and shares his passion for music, food, friends and family-in fact, were it not for the passion evident in his writing, this memoir might have been of a Picaro with a bent for manipulating the palate. R. Shamlian admits the perplexities of romance and even hands over his award-winning apple pie recipe all with a sense of a great sense of humor and irony. Read this book!

A Slice of Apple Pie is a thoughtful memoir from the opening dedication to the surprise at the end. The story is an honest and revealing portrait recounting the vicisssitudes of an artist trying to find his place in the world. Shamlian shares intimate details and delicious images that will resonate with most readers. Who hasn't recalled a time in their life with food as the primary memory? The author's journey is defined by one culinary experience after another. Surely upon reading A Slice of Apple Pie, one will never think of creme brulee the same way again! This is a fine book. It captures the flavors and infusions of the varied ethnic groups that make Shamlian's narrative quintessentially American.
