Lucy Maud Montgomery was a Canadian author born in Clifton, Prince Edward Island, in 1874. Her mother died of tuberculosis when Lucy was 21 months old and her father gave custody over to Montgomery's maternal grandparents, in Cavendish, where she live a quiet and very lonely life. Later, she studied for a teacher's license at Prince of Wales College. For one year (1895-1896), she left teaching to study selected courses in English literature at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Maud Montgomery Macdonald die in Toronto, Ontario, on April 24, 1942, and she was buried in the Cavendish cemetery, close to the site of her old home. Anne of Green Gables (1908) recounts the adventures of Anne Shirley, a young orphan girl mistakenly sent to Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, a middle-aged brother and sister who have a farm on Prince Edward Island and who had intended to adopt a boy to help them, but they falls for her charm immediately. Anne takes much joy in life and adapts quickly. At school, she excels in her studies. Soon she feels a vocation for literature. Written as fiction for readers of all ages, the literary classic has been considered a children's novel. Since publication, Anne of Green Gables has sold more than 50 million copies and has been translated into 20 languages. Numerous sequels were written by Montgomery, and since her death another sequel has been published. The original book is taught to students around the world.
