Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal

Gr 4-7
Highlighting historic firsts in the efforts to send people into space, this colorful gallery briefly introduces over two dozen astronauts, cosmonauts, and animals, along with such fellow travelers as Jules Verne, George Lucas, and Burt Rutan. The spreads are laid out in scrapbooklike montages; color photos are crookedly "clipped" to ragged pieces of paper on which the captions and simply phrased text are printed. Career time lines are charted on small notebook pages, and larger photos are often used as backgrounds. Several entries end with Web links to educational sites, which are supplemented by a digestible set of print and online resources at the end. Closing with a short interview with longtime Cape Canaveral launchpad supervisor Guenter Wendt, this volume effectively conjures up the human element in events that will seem like (are) ancient history to young readers, and should be as effective in sparking a genuine interest in finding out more about the space program's past and future as it will be useful in support of assignment-driven research.

First Chapter

Astronauts and Other Space Heroes FYI

Chapter One

Human beings have always been explorers, wondering what lies beyond the next ridge of mountains or around the next curve of the river.

We have always wanted to go just a little farther, to see just a little more.

And we haven't been content to explore our own small planet. We've looked up at the stars and the other planets, glowing spots of light that seemed to move in graceful patterns. We gave them names, told stories about them, and wondered what they were like. We dreamed of traveling beyond the sky.

In the twentieth century, we began to take our first steps away from Earth into the universe that surrounds us. In this book, you'll read the stories of some people and animals that helped us get there. Not all of them traveled into outer space, but they were all explorers—finding new places, discovering new ideas, and taking people beyond old boundaries. They gave us new ways to look at the planet we live on and the vast universe we live in, a space huge beyond our understanding, waiting to be explored.
