Overview

Standalone Dark Contemporary Romance

Some stories are a fairytale...but this isn't one.

Caelan Gregory’s life fell apart the night he went home and opened the door to find his whole family murdered. Since then, his life has held no meaning. He’s angry. He’s bitter. He’s barely human anymore. There’s nothing left to remind him of the straight A student, and football quarterback he once was…but he wasn’t a good person then, and he’s certainly not a good person now. He’s retreated into a world where all that exists is numbness and his passion for painting.

When Sutton Hale moves into the apartment across the hall from Caelan she’s not prepared for her reaction to him. Something in his broken blue eyes calls to her—after all she’s always had an irrational need to fix everything.

But Caelan doesn’t do relationships or feelings. He does drugs and alcohol. However, he can’t ignore his desire to get to know the raven-haired woman across the hall.

Two broken souls trying to mend one another.

But not everything can be fixed.

In the end, Caelan and Sutton will have to learn that there is beauty in the ashes.

think this could possibly be the worst book I have ever read. I just don't understand why authors put so much effort into a potentially great book just to rush through and ruin its entirety. The only reason for the two stars is because there was the possibility of a great love story, I wanted so desperately for Sutton and Cael to work out, and there was so many opportunities for this to take place. I was almost gutted while reading the events that transpired over the last third of the book. I just kept shaking my head thinking "No..No... this is all wrong". I was really pinning for the "real happy ever after" and realize that through tragedy and heartache, love can and will conquer all. I just really could not for any circumstances get on board with the reasoning behind this ending.

This book was phenominal. There are people pissing and moaning because it wasn't a cut and dry, roses and chocolates romance novel. Well kudos to Ms. Smeltzer, this was a story I actually cared about,  focusing on people that could actually exist. I can't wait for the companion novel, and I am now DEFINITELY a Micalea Smeltzer fan.

Ok this story was about 2 broken people meeting and fighting and falling in love but their past keeps them apart emotionally yet they do love each other but their love is not good for each other? That is where I became angry with where this story went! Just wrong okay. I will not say anymore because I do not want to ruin someone else's read but I have to say this ending was wrong!

Micalea Smeltzer took me on quite a ride with this book.  Sutton

Micalea Smeltzer took me on quite a ride with this book.  Sutton and Caelan are both traumatized from their youth it is not funny.  Caelan lost  his whole family to tragedy and saw the aftermath and Sutton was adopted but put through so many terrible things by her adoptive brother.  I found myself rooting for this couple to work out despite all of the odds stacked against them.  At the 2/3rd's mark, everything changes and I was left wondering what happened.  In the end both Sutton and Caelan were happy but it was not the ending I was expecting or rooting for.  It is a book about self-discovery and adapting your needs.  I get that.  I was unsure of how Memphis could have the feelings that he did because other than a few meetings, there really wasn't much interaction shown between them.  Sutton found herself struggling with yet another life changing event and somehow says that she knew Memphis meant something to her the whole time.  I wasn't able to see that I guess.  Overall a good read and definitely had plot twists, so if you enjoy a roller coaster ride, you will be fine with this one.

Having the word beauty in the title of this was perfect because

Having the word beauty in the title of this was perfect because it was a beautiful book. It made me laugh and made me cry.

The book introduces you to Sutton and Calean. Two people who have had lives that have been nothing short of easy.  These two meet in an apartment complex where they live and the story follows them trying to become better people, overcoming their pasts, and trying to move forward.  But life is difficult, moving on can be hard, and trying to learn to live again is a huge challenge.

Ms. Smeltzer has written a book that makes you want to jump inside the pages, sit beside the characters and just be there for them while they struggle. I cried while reading this because while not all of us go through the same struggles, we have been there for someone, we have rooted for someone to change, to heal, to live. Beauty in the Ashes should be on your TBR list. Because this book will give you new meaning on life, on moving on, and being someone you never thought you could be.

Without a doubt this is one of my favorite books so far this yea

Without a doubt this is one of my favorite books so far this year. In fact, Beauty in the Ashes is definitely one of my favorite books ever. Caelan and Sutton connect due to an unspoken understanding of one another. They’re both survivors of brutal, bloody and life-altering tragedy. Their relationship is filled with soaring highs and devastating lows that constantly threaten to consume them both. I was overwhelmed by the emotions Micaelea so expertly infused into this story. There were several moments when I came close to launching my iPad across the room because every single time the characters stumbled I was right there falling down beside them.

This stunning novel left me aching to know the stories of every single character we meet along Sutton and Caelan’s journey. Every detail of this story was carefully crafted to snag a tight grip on the reader’s heart from the beginning and hold it captive until the end (and however long your book hangover lasts). The ending of this book took me by complete surprise. I’ll admit at first I was shocked and a little bit (or maybe a lot) angry. I didn’t understand the direction the story was taking, mostly because it wasn’t the direction I expected. I will say that by the time the book was over I was content. Happy even. Micaela outdid herself with Beauty in the Ashes and I am left in complete awe of her exemplary storytelling abilities and her gift for creating and nurturing emotional connections with her readers. Do not miss out on this book. This is an absolute NEED to read.
