Beethoven: Missa Solemnis

Overview

Opinions have been polarized on the Beethoven "Revolution" series of that composer's symphonies by conductor Jordi Savall, much better known for music dating back to the early medieval era. Those who have liked Savall's Beethoven will probably likewise take to this reading of the Missa Solemnis, Op. 123, which has the same transparency of sound. For others, this may not be quite the place to start. With a choir of 37, this is an underpowered Missa Solemnis; a modern-instrument recording with a big civic chorus probably comes closer to the spirit of the Missa Solemnis premiere, which featured 90 singers and a violin section of two dozen. Savall is a sensitive conductor, and in quiet passages here, one can understand his aims. The sopranos in the "Et vitam venturi seculi" at the end of the Credo do indeed sound like voices wafting down from the great beyond, and the solos and solo ensembles, with a strong quartet of singers (the most distinctive is contralto Olivia Vermeulen), are beautifully handled. In more imposing sections, however, the choir and orchestra both tend to be drowned out by the trombones and timpani. Sample the underwhelming opening of the Gloria, which just does not have the intended effect. Part of the problem is the recording space, a murky, heavily reverberant Romanesque castle-church called the Collégiale de Cardona, in which everything but the loudest instruments tends to dissipate. However, it is also that Savall, in his effort to dismantle the usual high-energy Beethoven, goes a bit far here. However, no one would suggest that he doesn't have something fresh to say about Beethoven, and listeners' mileage may vary. The last parts of the piece, where this most triumphal of composers unexpectedly ends on a note of uncertainty in the face of actual battle, are quite moving. Definitely a departure from other recordings of the Missa Solemnis. ~ James Manheim
