    more from this reviewer

    answers a lot of questions...

Being Vegan answers a lot of questions about the vegan lifestyle. The book is put together in a question and answer format. Joanne Stepaniak is an award-winning columnist and there are many different questions brought up in this book that she answers with feeling and conviction. The book examines what it means to be vegan: morals and philosophy, what to do with your old non-vegan products (leather, wool, etc.), relationships with non-vegans, what to do about insect infestations, societal pressures for vegans in a non-vegan world and many other issues. This is a good read for vegans or anyone else who is interested in a compassionate way of living. "Vegan tenets are relatively simple: Do the least harm and the most good."

    Too hippy.

This book is set up in question-answer format, and so many of the questions are almost identical. The book was too hippy for my taste. For instance, I don't believe that being vegan should require someone to be a pacifist who is nice and patient with all people. I also don't believe that because I am in the military, I can't be considered vegan (as the author insinuates). If you like vegan lit, but don't like this froo-froo stuff, buy Skinny Bitch or Dominion.

    Five stars are not enough!

Being Vegan is an excellent resource for everyone working to make life on the planet better by being vegan. This book is just bursting with helpful insights and ideas. Its question and answer format is easy to read, and the author's clear, straightforward writing is thoroughly enjoyable. Veganism holds a wealth of solutions to many problems in the world today, and Ms. Stepaniak demonstrates how we can respond to common, everyday challenges in ways that help not only us, but the animals and the rest of the environment as well. A terrific book. I highly recommend it.
