Bart King is my new hero. On the surface, his books might look like they're getting by on being similar to the ubiquitous Dangerous Book for Boys. King's pocket guides-with illustrations of paper airplanes, Chuck Taylors, and a slingshot on their covers-do cash in on that kind of scrappy retro charm. But these books are something entirely different.

These books are hilarious. And informative-if you want to know how to get the best of your nemesis or play toilet tag. What makes these special is not only that they're well-written, well-designed, and funny, but also that they present information that is actually new and actually useful (again, useful to the sorts of people who like to play toilet tag).

A few tantalizing sample tastes:
From The Pocket Guide to Mischief: "You'll need some cream cheese. First, roll the deodorant out maybe half an inch . . ."
From The Pocket Guide to Games: "Fill several balloons with water, and hang one from a tree . . ."
From The Pocket Guide to Boy Stuff: "Here are two hand-grenade designs that you can use that won't start a fire . . ."

If these don't seem gender-neutral enough, and you have a daughter who is into this kind of thing, rest assured that Bart King also has girl versions: The Big Book of Girl Stuff gracefully and barely touches on puberty, but includes plenty of pranks, code names, and hijinx for kids who like bright pink more than baseballs on the covers of their books.

Should someone you know be interested, visit the author's web site: bartking.net. It includes video clips illustrating some of the guides' proposed activities!

While the boys dig into treasure lore, girls can delve into all things female in the softbound The Big Book of Girl Stuff by Bart King, a follow-up to his The Big Book of Boy Stuff. From babysitting tips to beauty hints to slumber party inspirations, girls will linger over these pink pages brimming with cartoons and step-by-step instructions. Children's Literature - Kathie M. Josephs
There have been thousands of "How To" books published but this one is original, refreshing, and absolutely perfect for girls. The following is just a sample of what will be learned from reading this book: "why boys smell so bad, how to make a fake belly button piercing, what to do about a killer crush, how to get rid of breakfast blahs and what to do when the person you are talking to has something on the tip of their nose." I was completely absorbed when reading this book and believe me when I tell you it certainly brought back memories. There are thirty-two wonderful chapters filled with advice that is positively relevant for middle and young adult readers. The information is done in reader-friendly format using as few words as possible yet getting the point across. Questions that girls might have on their minds are included. For example, "How does flirting work?" and "How do I get a boy's attention?" The answers are thoughtful and easy to understand. Illustrations are used to add interest and humor, as well as to clarify. This book is ideal to give as a gift to any girl who is just becoming interested in boys or to improve her interaction with friends. I highly recommend this book.

This funny follow-up to The Big Book of Boy Stuff (Gibbs Smith, 2004) is chock-full of hints and guidance. From the silly ("Why boys smell so bad") to the slightly serious ("Lies, Mean Girls, and Jerks"), it will have readers thumbing through the volume again and again. The author keeps the mood light and the sections short and sweet. Though the organization appears a bit random with an opening chapter about babysitting and the glossary of "cool" tween speak stuck in the middle, the text does have a good flow. As the extensive bibliography demonstrates, King has done his research. Growing up is a challenge, and his hip handbook is a resource not only for girls, but parents as well. The volume has amusing illustrations and a reversible cover for sneaky in-school reading. While the information presented can be found in other books, the author's sense of humor and lighthearted approach make this one accessible to a wide range of readers.

A "fashion" is the latest trend that is popular at the moment. The only problem is that as soon as any fashion becomes really popular, it's suddenly out-of-date!

Plus, it's hard to be unique when somebody else "invented" the fashion, and everybody else is wearing it.

But you don't have to wear the latest fashions to have style! You can create your own style by picking outfits that YOU think look good because they have that certain "flair." Maybe your style is elegant or creative or goofy.

Hey, it's your style, so express yourself with it! Add a trippy new accessory. Put on a man's hat. Mix stripes with plaid. (Or not.) That's turning fashion into your style!

    Great Book For Girls

My 11 year old devoured this book. After a thumb through on my own I found it a good book for the tween and early teen girl. It touches on a little of everything and could be a great springboeard for other mother-daughter talks.

    VERY good book

This is a very good book and it had lots of good information for girls and their friends. I am eleven years old and enjoyed this book a lot. My sister that is 14 also enjoyed me telling her some fun facts from this book. I would wake up every morning and read from it for about 30 minutes, because it has such good information. I would highly recommend this book for kids 10-14. It has stuff about babysitting, nicknames and letters, practical jokes, boys, and much more to learn about. It has a CHEMISTRY heading on the book to sneak into class. Haha. It also had a reversable cover. The inside cover looks like a notebook also for sneaking into class. This is a very good book for all girls to have! =]

    Great Gift for 9-13yr olds

My 10 yr old daughter loves this book.It has fun advice on friends, family, shoes and becoming a teenager. All with a great sense of humor! There are many little tidbits of information such as getting rid of the hiccups or how to get gum out of your hair.We also enjoyed the few facts about dreams, healthy eating and how TV adds effect our choices.
I enjoyed the quick chapter about looks and the down side of plastic surgery.I like the way this book touches on these topics, quickly and to the point, as adults we tend to go on and on with our lessons often loosing our daughers attention halfway. This is the short sweet and funny version.I do suggestyou scan through this book first to make sure you find it appropriate depending on the girls age. There is a page about body changes and mestruation. It goes no further thankfully. My daughter and friends giggle over this book at sleepovers sharing fashion, makeover tips and fun advice.

I bought this book for my 10 year-old daughther. She and her friend thought it was cute (especially when the outer cover was removed to reveal "Chemistry"). She shares her reviews below which she typed personally.

This book is very entertaining, realistic, and hilarious. It tells you funny stories, and activites that you can do with your friends. Surprisingly, everything is true. This book tells you everything that you need to know about life and gives great advice. And I really love the way that you can switch around the covers (or take it off so some sees you with a "chemistry" book). Hopefully, someone else will discover this book and find out just how wonderful it is. I truly enjoyed it.
