Overview

From New York Times and USA Today best selling author Toni Aleo come the next installment to the Assassins series:

BREAKING AWAY is a story of loss, healing, and love… where unexpected turns and heartache lead to passion.

To Nashville Assassins’ leading scoring center Phillip Anderson, playing hockey has always been easy… as natural as breathing. His life is no different. That’s until his world is turned upside down by the death of his sister. While mourning his loss, Phillip has to find a way to make his very angry sixteen-year-old niece, Claire, happy. Now, as her guardian, he discovers the only thing that seems to heal her lonely heart is dance class. But what he didn’t count on was the attraction he’d feel towards her drop-dead sexy dance teacher.

For Reese Allen, dancing has always been part of her soul. After having her heart broken in New York, she comes home with the determination to make her dance studio one of the best in Tennessee and succeeds. When she sees Claire dance for the first time, she knows the girl is bound for greatness and takes the troubled teen under her wing. Using dance as therapy, she suddenly finds herself bound to the young woman… and her hot-as-sin uncle.

However, Phillip and Reese are happy in their single lives. It’s simple. They do what they want, who they want, and how they want, but from the moment they meet, the attraction is undeniable. Soon, they are more than willing to spend just one night tangled in the sheets. But, one night turns into two, and two turns into three, until they find themselves in a repeated dance of “One Last Time” that has the potential to be something more… if only Reese and Claire allow it.

Can Phillip find a way to thaw the hearts of both the women in his life, or will he be forever trying to break them away from their pasts?

    Great Story!

I have read all the books in this series and I think this might be my favorite (all were super good).. Philip is a prince and any gal that wouldn't turn head over heels for him would be "nuts"... The back story of his sisters addiction and his coming into parenting his 16 year old niece Claire are heartbreaking... His love, patience and understanding of Reese and her problems after her heart was torn to shreds by a married man was a thing to be envied... He loved her so much and wanted her for his wife... Again, the hockey player part doesn't really impact the story... Just because you don't like hockey (or sports) don't miss this book because the story is terrific...

Very disappointed with BREAKING AWAY.  This book is very lacking in a good story. All the other
books in the series are great and could not  wait for this one to come out. I am on page 191 and
can't say I am impressed. It is slow and not at all up to par with Ms Aleo's other books in the
series.  I loved TAKING SHOTS.  I thought there would be interaction with Phillip and his niece,CLaire.
Not happening.  Every other page he is in bed with Claire's dancing teacher. Very poorly written.

Wonderful book....wonderful series! I love that Breaking Away has the heroine as the one with comittment issues rather than the hero. 334 pages of enjoyable reading on my Nook. If I miss anything it is the full color covers from the previous books.

Breaking Away is the 5th book in the Assassin Series by Toni Ale

Breaking Away is the 5th book in the Assassin Series by Toni Aleo and oh my goodness I couldn’t get enough of this book. Phillip and Reese have played small parts in the previous books (Phillip being the party guy that likes to annoy Shea and is Erik’s best friend and Reese being Piper’s taller, b*tchy twin sister), but this book is all about them (and Phillip’s niece, Claire). You find out why Reese is so “cold” and you find out that really she is a very passionate person (not just about Phillip). She loves her family and will do anything in her power to help them. She loves dance, doing it, choreographing it, and teaching it, everything about dance (minus the crazy dance parents). She uses her passion for dance to help Phillip’s niece heal.

Phillip, it turns out isn’t just a party guy, always up for a good time. He is a guy that had a rough start and he worked hard to get away from it, but in his getting away he left someone behind, his young niece Claire. Since Phillip’s sister died towards the end of Blue Lines his aunt was taking care of Claire, but then he finds out that things aren’t so great so he gets Claire and brings her back to Nashville with him. When things finally get too bad Claire ends up moving in with Harper (you get to see most of the characters at some point in this book) while Phillip is on the road with the Assassins. This is where Reese first sees Claire dances and in having Claire join her studio what brings Phillip and Reese together.

From here on out there is a LOT of sexy times but also moments of tenderness and heartache. Reese helps Phillip with his niece, being an ear when he needs it and giving advice when he asks. Overall it is a really great story of overcoming past hurts and trusting that not everyone will let you down. I loved the interaction between Phillip and his niece. He really loves her and wants to be there for her, but she has been through a lot and feels like he left her when he should have helped get her out.  The relationship they develop is beautiful and it was beautifully written. I love the push and pull of Phillip and Reese’s relationship. Their chemistry is off the charts but they also can talk to each other (most of the time). They both love fiercely but because of past issues have a hard time accepting love. I will say this book is a little (or a lot if you do the math) sexier than the previous books in the series. I’m pretty sure if I was as busy as them I would be exhausted, all the time. But it was written in true Toni Aleo style with the right amount of sass, wit, fun, sexy and heartfelt emotions that I have come to expect from her books. She is an author that always makes me feel (and I felt my heart break a few times). If you have read her books previously and loved them, you will love this one. If you haven’t read any of Ms. Toni’s books I highly recommend you pick them up.

Breaking Away (Assassins #5) by Toni Aleo  Hockey star, Phillip

Breaking Away (Assassins #5) by Toni Aleo

Hockey star, Phillip Anderson, life is upended when his sister dies leaving him the guardian of his enraged sixteen-year-old niece, Claire.

Dancer, Reese Allen, left her successful life in New York after her heart was broken.  She opens a dance studio in Tennessee resolved to make it a success.  She discovers a talented  sixteen-year-old girl named, Claire, who she takes under her wing.

Phillip and Reese are undeniably attracted to each other but not wanting a relationship or to hurt Claire.

I adore Phillip.  I have a blond-haired  cousin/godson named Phillip, that just got a college hockey scholarship.  I couldn’t help thinking about him every time I read his name.  This being said, my Phil had a much better home life growing up. I sympathized for Toni’s Phillip.  He managed to turn out okay considering his parental situation.  It killed me that he didn’t get that much love.  He is such a wonderful guy never wanting to give up on the people he cares about.

I love Reese; she is hard working, determined, and stubborn.   She was hurt in the past, so she doesn’t let anyone in (other than family).  Those that don’t really know her view her as cold but there is a lot more to her then meets the eye.  Phillip and Claire attempt to chisel away her defenses.  The three are really perfect together, obstacles and all.

I enjoyed reading about the dance aspect of the story.  I don’t have a daughter, and I never danced so this was new for me.  I do have many friends who have daughters who are serious dancers that compete throughout the country.  My son plays travel hockey, and I always tell my dance friends that I feel like it is as intense as travel hockey.  They all agree.  I have always felt that the two activities are a lot alike although different.  So I loved that dance and hockey were the passions of the main characters of this story.

Toni Aleo is such a terrific author.  She has an incredible way of making you feel connect with all of her characters, completely investing you as a reader.  I experienced every emotion while reading this book: I laughed; I smiled; I cried.  Plus, previous members of the Assassins’ hockey family are always included making the story all the more powerful.

I can’t wait for Laces and Lace (Assassins #6).  Between Phillips’s little chat with Karson King in this book and after reading Tangled in the Laces (Assassins #5.6) (found in the anthology, Seduced by the Game) I’m dying for Karson’s story.  I have a feeling it is going to be very powerful.

If you are already an Assassins fan, you won’t be disappointed with Breaking Away.  If you haven’t read it yet, what are you waiting for?  It’s a great series, whether you like, hockey, sports romance, contemporary romance, or being emotionally invested in your characters.  The books can stand alone, but I would read them in order.  There is always something in a previous book that makes you enjoy the characters all the more.

    Unlikeable female

Hate that she can't seem to write "women" or "girls" or "ladies.". Heck, I'll take "gals" over constant use of "females." Just feels stilted and I have never known anyone to use that term so often in conversation. Takes you out of the story, very distracting. Phillip was great but I didn't care for Reese. Disappointing entry in the series.

    Highly recommend.

I love all of Toni's books but I think this might be my favorite. There were moments when I wanted to strangle Reese for the way she was acting, yet I could understand why she was as guarded as she was. Phillip was wonderful and I liked his strength when trying to get through Reese's walls and dealing with his niece. I am so glad that Claire and Phillip worked through their issues and she didn't try to stop Reese and Phillips relationship. I just loved this book. There was love, romance, laughter, and friendship all rolled into one great relationship. Keep up the good work Toni.

    4.5 stars!

For everyone who is new to this series, you've been missing out!  Luckily for you and me, Toni writes her books so they can be read as stand alones.  I'm still playing catch up with this series having read only 3 out of the 5 currently available.  There are some minor spoilers for the two books I missed, but I still can't wait to read them.  They're an incentive to find out what all happened before the HEA.

Back to Breaking Away, I really liked how both Reese and Phillip protested so strongly about staying single and how each time was the "last time" through out most of the book.  Coming to Reese and Phillip them, I liked them but together, I loved them.  Both are witty and funny.  I love how Reese was with her nieces and nephews and how confident she was in herself and skills.  That's why I was a little disconcerted when something from Reese's past was revealed.  However, my admiration was solid again in no time.  With Phillip, how can you not love a man who is trying so hard to make things right with someone he wronged?  In the beginning I didn't really like Claire but as information came to light, that changed too. It was also great to see see familiar faces from previous Assassins books and how they were doing. The Assassins have become quite a tribe!

It's funny but I really feel like I flew through this book.  Once Reese and Phillip gave in to their attraction to each other, I was fanning my self with one hand from all the heat they were giving off and turning pages as fast as I could with the other.  I think of all the Assassins books I've read so far, Breaking Away is my current favorite.  It has just the right amount of drama, laughter, heat, and emotions to make for a great sports and family romance.  Yes I said emotional.  I teared up but didn't sob.  Some were happy tears and others tears of empathy.  If you're looking for a great summer read, don't forget to add Breaking Away to your list!
