Overview

Bungalow Colors: Exteriors is the first of two books that will address the importance of color in Arts & Crafts architecture and interior design. Drawing on the works of such Arts & Crafts masters as Greene & Greene, Stickley and Wright, author Robert Schweitzer outlines the history and importance of color within the Arts & Crafts movement, revealed in dozens of authentic period illustrations and photographs.

Bungalow Colors: Exteriors provides practical advice for those who wish to integrate historically accurate colors into their homes, whether restoring an older bungalow or aiming to impart a more authentic flavor to a new Arts & Crafts-style home. Bungalow Colors: Exteriors focuses on "outside" solutions-covering exterior walls, windows, roofs, and other architectural features, plus revealing which colors are traditionally used for body, trim, accents, stucco, shingles and clapboards. Real-life restorations are showcased in color photographs throughout, in some cases providing "before" and "after" shots of bungalow color makeovers. It's everything an Arts & Crafts enthusiast is looking for to create a visually stunning bungalow exterior.

Editorial Reviews

Seattle Times
Explores color theory and has before-and-after color photos, plus tips for developing your own color scheme.
Chicago Daily Herald
...the many pictures in the book, both old and new, are wonderful. No matter what style and material your house or even if you don't own one, it's great fun to read and look through.
The Oregonian
In this remarkably practical and well-researched book, Schweitzer addresses the importance of color within the movement. He draws on numerous period colors from early-twentieth-century sources and then outlines the steps to creating historic paint schemes using modern products. One particularly interesting section at the end is devoted to before-and-after photographs showcasing several Arts and Crafts homes across the country transformed through the use of authentic colors.
Library Journal
When they were first built, many of the older American homes were quite colorful, with their architectural features enhanced by contrasting or complementary hues. Schweitzer, who teaches architectural history and historic preservation at Eastern Michigan University and is a columnist for Victorian Homes magazine, provides a wealth of information to anyone restoring a bungalow or other Arts and Crafts-style home. Readers are introduced to a variety of home styles popular in the early 20th century, with many period characteristics defined. This title emphasizes exterior color, so numerous period illustrations (some with floor plans) and paint charts are provided. Of great interest is a section on developing one's own color scheme. A "Before and After" section shows how the beauty of existing houses can be restored. Recommended to anyone restoring a home of this period or to those who simply enjoy older homes; most public libraries should consider. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

Introduction

At the turn of the twenty-first century an incredible interest in the early years of the twentieth century and its corresponding Arts & Crafts design philosophy has surfaced. Television programs devoted to showcasing Craftsman and Bungalow homes appear weekly. Several popular magazine written entirely on the topic of restoring and decorating homes in the Arts & Crafts style are currently in print. New subdivisions of "modern bungalows" are springing up all across the nation. Yet, surprisingly enough, not one book is available on how to go about selecting exterior colors for the historic or newly built bungalow. This work is an attempt to bring together the various elements that are necessary to undertake the task of designing an exterior color scheme and bring it to completion.

The sections that follow start out by providing some important historical background about the homes of the early twentieth century, where their design inspirations came from, and why they look the way they do. Next follows useful information on Arts & Crafts home styles of the age and their popular exterior colors, as drawn from actual historic period sources. Some basic color theory follows, explaining why some colors generally work better with others and why some don't. The last sections of the book are devoted to practical application featuring original bungalow period colors directly from early-twentieth-century sources and then providing the steps to create your own bungalow color scheme using modern products. For inspirational purposes, the "Before & After" section illustrates what wonderful transformations can occur through good planning and employing a thoughtful process.
