How to write a book review instead of a book report

I gave it 5 stars because i did not want to lower the authors rating with my post ... its a free book friday selection so its all good as far as i'm concerned ...people here need to understand that a book review is RADICALLY DIFFERENT from a book report .....we don't need to include a synopsis of the story that is what the overview in the description is for . A good book review need only answer a few questions 1 was it good ? 2) Why did you enjoy it ? (I.e realism of charachters , humorous qualities ,likeability of charachters, emotional connections etc ).How long was it? And would you read it again? Most importantly do not put plot spoilers .this is how you write a good review .all these long detailed ones found here read like high school book reports not reviews ...you prove you've read the book ....while ruining it for potential future readers

It took me a while to read this one and I’m not sure why.  I think the very beginning might have been a little slow but once I got into it I just couldn’t put it down.  I’d try to find a stopping point to do those mundane, everyday things (like cook and eat) but I’d get to the end of a chapter and find myself compelled to keep reading.  By Design is an engaging story not only about finding love, but also about finding yourself. - Full review available at BookTrib or RomanticReadsandSuch on Wordpress.

    INFINITY & BEYOND

I have not read this book yet, but felt compelled to write about the long reviews. If I see a long review I just "skip" over it. BUT the review the Anonymous May 30, 2013 left was more than just long it was to INFINITY & BEYOND !!! I do believe B&N could put a end to this by limiting how many words or lines are allowed to a review. Just saying....

I received a copy of By Design by Jayne Denker in exchange for an honest review.

I liked this book a lot. It was a very enjoyable read with a great main character who I could not help but root for from the very beginning.

Emmie is looking for a life filled with love and happiness, and it seems to her that everyone around her has what she wants, not noticing they are all as flawed as she is, and in some instances, even more so. Emmie, however, has some issues in the confidence department and does not think she has what it takes to get what she wants out of life, and as a result she is taken advantage of – a lot.

Fortunately, she has a great group of friends who encourage her to take the initiative. What happens in some instances are downright laugh out loud funny and sometimes, not so much.

There is a little Emmie in all of us and we could all relate to her – in some way.

    Sounds good...

Got the book because the synopsis sounded good. Haven't read it yet, but I'm giving the author 5 stars anyway. Reason? I get really tired of people giving a book a poor rating just because someone else posted a book report instead of a review. It's not the author's fault; don't knock them for a reviewer's blunder. Give the book an honest review and flag the lengthy ones as plot spoilers. (And fyi... I flag the complainers as off-topic. Which I am too. Oh well.)

    Good read

Emmie and Graham's story is a sweet, clean romance. It is written well and has great conversations that are funny, emotional and/or sad. 270 pages

Interior Designer hopeful, Emmie Brewster, is stuck in a job goi

Interior Designer hopeful, Emmie Brewster, is stuck in a job going nowhere. Her boss, Wilma, is a monster to work for and her boyfriend is cheating on her. She starts surfing her high school classmates on the web and yearns for their success. Just when she thinks she’ll be stuck in this rut forever the most gorgeous man enters her office. After days of wish filled fantasies about the mystery hunk she discovers he is having an affair with the popular girl from high school that has just returned to their home town.

Suddenly something clicks and Emmie decides she is going for what she wants. The mystery man, which she learns name is Graham, tells her overbearing boss that he wants Emmie as the lead on his design project. With her quirky friends by her side Emmie struggles her way into the life she always desired. Will she have to face it alone or can she win the man of her dreams?

This was a fun, entertaining story. I enjoyed watching Emmie fight her way into the life she has always wanted. Jayne Denker wrote true friendship, strong characters and Emmie as a young woman embolden by her stagnant life. By Design was a great contemporary romance and a perfectly delightful book.

This ARC copy of By Design was given to me by Kensington Books in exchange for a honest review. This book is set for publication May 16, 2013.

OK, enough of the plot synopses and the complainers! A book review is meant to evaluate the value of the writing, the interest level of the storyline, the believability of the characters and the command of the book as a whole. I read "reviews" to determine if I would like to read it, not to CONSTANTLY, hear about how someone has "spoiled" the plot by detailing the complete story. Reviews are NOT book reports, but comments on the quality of the work. If you have read it, please indicate if it has a "religious" bent as some of us do not wish to read that, and let us know if you could not put it down, or if you were pressed hard to get past chapter 2. Rating is irrelevant as I have yet to read this.

    Bad

Not very good. Typical romance type, didnt like the gay thing thrown in, that turned me off. Very slow in all. Would not recommend and wouldnt bother reading anything else by this author.

Could Have Been a Cute Story

The idea and concept seemed sound. The author has talent as a writer. But I had several problems with this book (hope I don't give Spoilers). 1. The Heroine and her friends sounds like teenagers. They are supposedly thrity-somthings, but the dialogue was straight from a Young Adult novel. It was distractng and did nothing to show who the characters truly are. 2. The Hero with the 'save her' complex. . .I would have liked this story more had he not really been in the relationship with the married woman while also supposedly admitting love for the Heroine. I kept waiting to see him say, "she's my sister/cousin/etc". He was in an adultrous relationshp, which makes him NOT Hero material to me. 3. I never really got 'into' this world and story, I couldn't 'see, feel, scent', etc. their world. In other words, they didn't jump off the page at me.

    Loved it

Very good read. It kept my interest throughout the whole story. The characters were real and engaging. The christmas party was funny and sad, like many occasions we all experience. A promising author.
