Luxuriate in Tad Williams’ lush and compelling Shakespearian fantasy

“Williams takes a break from his betselling fantasy epics, venturing into Shakespearean territory with this intriguing retelling of ‘The Tempest.’ The story begins years later, when the abused slave Caliban, now fully grown, makes his way to Italy and into the chambers of Miranda, Prospero’s daughter, whom Caliban once loved and was punished for pursuing. Prospero is long dead and Miranda is now a matron, but Caliban remains bent on revenge – and on having someone hear his story from his point of view… Williams’ prose is lucid and smooth, and his storytelling effortless” Publishers Weekly

“Driven by the twin ghosts of revenge and love, the misshapen creature known as Caliban leaves his island to confront the object of his hatred and his desire: Prospero's daughter, Miranda… this graceful retelling of Shakespeare’s The Tempest… Williams has previously demonstrated his ability to craft original fantasy on a large scale; here he reveals his talent for exploring the hidden recesses of one all-too-human heart” Library Journal

Masterful story from the perspective of Caliban of Shakespeare's "The Tempest"

As a Tad William's fan of many years, I was excited to have the opportunity to read Caliban's Hour. The book was gifted to me by Tad's wonderful wife Deborah Beale who I have corresponded with on Facebook. She took the time to critique my poetry which I appreciated very much. They have decided to jump on the e-book train with the reissue of Caliban's Hour to digital format. Another take on "The Tempest" by Shakespeare, the story is told from Caliban's perspective. Tad Williams delivers a masterful story retelling that pulls you into the mind of Caliban. I was pulled into the story immediately with the intricate descriptions of people and places. You feel as if you are immersed in Caliban's world and see reality from his perspective. The story begins with Caliban's journey from his island to the darkly rich landscape of Naples, Miranda's & Prospero's world. Here he again meets up with Miranda, an unwitting victim of Caliban's revenge. He proceeds to tell her his story and why he comes to be there. You soon learn that love turns to hate, and that they both merge to complete the cycle of vengeance. I couldn't help but find myself on Caliban's side and felt that he was an unwitting victim to circumstance. I applauded his reasons for doing what he does in the end. If you are a fan of Tad, this is a must read. His world building skills and descriptions do exactly as a good story should. He pulls you into the character's heart and soul and leaves you wanting more. I gave this masterpiece a 5 star rating as it did exactly as it should and allowed me to escape into Caliban's world.

    Interesting Enough

It has been awhile since I read this book but I thought of it the other day for no reason and came to BN to confirm the name of it, seeing that nobody has reviewed, figured I was obligated. All I can remember that really stands out, that I really liked about the story is, this woman is banished to an island for being a witch. She is pregnant, and her banishers have cut out her tongue!! What a great set up, this story is about how her son survives on this island without communication for a long time, and somehow tad Williams turned it into a nice little love story. It's a nice fast decent read. I may have to read it again to refresh my memory.
