Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Given the recent popularity of television shows such as CSI, it would not be surprising for young people to be attracted to a career in forensic science. This book outlines some of the most common occupations and career paths in this area. Opening with a brief history of forensic science, the book focuses on appropriate educational backgrounds and aptitudes for a career in the field. It then moves into a discussion of various specialties and the occupational possibilities associated with them. For example, the book surveys the fields of forensic chemistry, biology, anthropology, art, and engineering, among others. In each example, case studies illustrate how these various scientists worked together to solve or investigate a particular crime or problem. Box features highlight some key cases (such as the World Trade Center collapse) and terminology (such as bloodstain patterns). Color photographs show these professionals on the job. A final chapter, focusing on a particular murder trial, makes for a rather abrupt ending. A more effective summary might have encouraged young people to enter the field or provided additional tips on preparing for a career in this area. Part of the "Forensic Science Investigated" series.
