A typical interracial romance Cold Warriors is marketed as an atypical interracial romance, but I’m not certain that’s an accurate description. The story follows Caitlin Driskoll, a former high school English teacher, and Medoro Keegan, a Lieutenant Colonel in the Marines. Caitlin awakens from a cyrogenic statis 90 years in the future to find that the world as she knew it no longer exists. The reader isn’t given much information about Caitlin’s background or what life was like for her in the past other than her being a high school English teacher, who was courted for two years before marrying Lieutenant Jason Driskoll, a JAG lawyer. We’re told that she was hospitalized for a cold that got out of hand and that’s the last thing she can recall. The story didn’t jive for me. I had entirely too many questions and not enough answers to satisfy my curiosity. I’m very much intrigued by the sci-fi genre but in my opinion, Cold Warriors had too much information in some places and too little in others. The lingo became a bit technical and hard to follow and I found myself skipping past parts. Ms. Dargin provides a glossary at the beginning of the book but I didn’t find it at all helpful. The romance between Medoro and Caitlin left a lot to be desired. It seemed forced. There wasn’t enough of a slow burn and his allowance of her continual mistreatment by his superiors and his so-called best friend left a sour taste in my mouth. This was my first time reading Ms. Dargin’s work and I have to say I find myself in a conundrum. The editing was phenomenal, despite one or two minor grammatical errors and the writing was good. However, the way the plot was executed failed to captivate me. The potential for this story to be epic was there but I was left scratching my head. Overall, I was very intrigued by the premise, which is why I will read Book 2 in the series, Ice and Peace. My curiosity has gotten the best of me. The way Cold Warriors ended, I have to know what comes next once Caitlin and Medoro resume life on earth. Not sure if I would recommend this one, but just to see if questions from Book 1 are answered, I will read and review Book 2. -Reviewed by Natalie

I really enjoyed the connection between the characters and how they maneuvered their way through the obstacles keeping them apart. The descriptions were clear, concise, and easy to understand without overloading you with a lot of technical jargon. I love to watch Sci-Fi, but don't read a lot of it. This story was an interesting, quick, and fun read.

Great Romantic Sci-Fi This fell comfortably into the levels of great sci-fi with romantic elements for me. Caitlin Driskoll wakes up from cryo after almost a hundred years to find herself in the midst of a war, fighting on a side she never would have chosen. Reluctant love in the hardest of times blooms into something deep. The way their relationship developed was natural and believable, keeping me caught up in their story.  I would recommend this for fans of military sci-fi who don't mind a few erotic elements. ~Lilly VanHorn
