Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
A small teddy bear named Corduroy sits on the shelf of a department store and longs for someone to buy him. One afternoon, a little girl spots him and instantly decides he is the bear she has always wanted. Despite her excitement, the girl's mother refuses to buy Corduroy, pointing out that the missing button on his overalls makes him look old. Upon hearing this, Corduroy decides to search the store in hopes of finding the button. That night, he encounters many new sights, including the store's escalator and furniture department. After Corduroy's failed attempt to remove a sewn-on button atop a mattress, the store's security guard finds him and places him back on his original shelf. The next day, Corduroy awakes to find himself greeted by the smiling face of the girl from the previous day. She buys Corduroy and takes him home where she then replaces his lost button. As Corduroy looks at his new surroundings, he rejoices in the realization that he now has a home and a loving friend to take care of him. Freeman's use of a character like Corduroy who appears to be flawed because of a useless overall strap conveys a valid moral lesson that even though something is not perfect, it is no less special. Freeman's illustrations also help add to the story's sense of adventure as the little teddy bear explores the sights and sounds of the world around him. By utilizing a sense of childlike innocence and curiosity, Freeman creates a character with the kind of charm and sincerity that children and adults alike will find hard to resist. Published in many forms over the years, this version is a large format board book. Reviewer: Joanna Wiley

    Classical read for all children

What a great book for all ages. I have read Corduroy since I was young and continued to read it with my students. I bought this for my great neice and Mom remembered when I bought it for her. I have bought this one and A Pocket for Corduroy but do not know about the rest of the series!
A book for all children to own.

    A Definite Read for Children

All of my children loved Corduroy. I even loved it. Now I have it on my Nook Color for my grandchildren to enjoy. This was the first children's book I bought for my Nook Color. My 27 year old daughter even read Corduroy after I bought it. I am sooooo glad it was available for my Nook Color.

A Classic Must Read for Children

I read this story over and over again to my own daughters when they were little. Now my daughter uses it in her preschool class. My friend is a literacy coach and also runs a home preschool. She was with me in Barnes and Noble and asked me for a recommendation for her little charges. We both saw the toy and the book and thought it would be an excellent addition to her library and toy collection. So Corduroy has found another home and will be enjoyed by many more lucky little ones.

    Highly Recommend!

I enjoyed reading this book as a child, and now my 2.5 year old daughter loves it too. It has colorful pictures and good lessons about loving something no matter what they look like (missing a button) and needing to make good decisions about spending money (not giving a child something right when she asks in the store).

Endearing story of a lovable teddy bear

This story about a dear, sweet little bear who wants, more than anything, for a friend to come and love him will win your and your childrens' hearts. The innocent way this cute bear explores his world is matched by the adorable drawings. A favorite of younger children, this story speaks to the way in which children see their stuffed animals, as friends. Time-tested, this book belongs on every child's bookshelf. It is an endearing classic that your children will remember and buy for their children.

    A sweet and classic tale

I actually purchased the book for the Adoptive and Foster Child Coalition. We do already own a copy. Both of my girls enjoyed the story very much and it remains a classic in our home.

    Corduroy is groovy

That was a joke. Corduroy...groovy...get it? This is a sweet little story that tells kids you don't have to be perfect to be loved. I recommend the Scholastic DVD with the Corduroy story. It's a very old video and very charming.
