Meet the Author

Born in Massachusetts in 1986, Nathan Squiers (The Literary Dark Emperor) grew up in Andover, where his affinity for story-telling flourished due to a love of books and movies as well as an overactive imagination. At the age of 13, Nathan and his mother moved to Upstate New York to be closer to their family. After surviving public school, where he spent most of his days locked away in the AV room watching old 80s movies on Laserdisc and planning out his next video project, Nathan began a shaky college career. A love of weaving tales and telling stories was motivation enough to pursue an education in English, and, as luck would have it, a series of phenomenal professors were available to get him pointed in the right direction. It was in his first years of college that Nathan began to actively pursue a writing career, starting his first literary journey with a piece that would later become "Noir", the first book of the Crimson Shadow series. Like any good story, a chaotic turn of events brought Nathan from the very brink of insanity and loneliness to the warm, comforting embrace of Megan, his best friend, lover, kindred spirit, and--more often than not--personal handler. It was with Megan at his side that Nathan was able to continue his writing (sometimes solely motivated by the young lady's threats of dismemberment if he tried to stop). With Megan's help, Nathan was able to see Death Metal, his fourth manuscript, through the publication process. Nearly ten years later, The Literary Dark Emperor continues to invent stories and put them into a literary sequence that he hopes will be somehow decipherable by other readers. As a lover of all things creative, he works in both novels, novellas, short stories, as well as comic book scripts (just don't ask him to draw something if you don't like stick figures and poorly-executed shapes). If he's not submerged in the realm of fiction or burning out his retinas with horror movie marathons, Nathan is planning/getting a new piercing/tattoo or enjoying life with his lovely fiancé and fellow author, Megan J. Parker.

I knew a little of what to expect from this book starting out, as far as lore goes, as I have already read several of Megan Parker's novels (I know, that was backwards), which is set in the same world. However, nothing could have prepared me for the level of darkness in this book. Noir is definitely aptly named. I must admit that it took longer than normal for me to finish this book, as the intensity, pain, and heartache was such that I had to put it down and separate from it several times (especially during the accounts of child abuse), but I normally review romance and fantasy novels, lighthearted things mostly, so this was quite a switch for me. That said, I found myself being drawn into this book, into this world, and caring deeply about Xander and his story. Nathan Squiers did an excellent job of weaving all the intricate details of the story together, while keeping the intensity way up the entire time, never letting the story stagnate. I swear there was never a dull moment. Each character is incredibly detailed and had their own distinct voice. The story was engaging, and my heart broke for Xander and all that happened to him, while I hoped and hoped he would triumph in the end. I loved the overall story, even if it was exceptionally dark. I'd say that this was a solid introduction to hopefully a fantastic series. I have a sneaking suspicion that the next one might be more what I am used to from reading the blurb. I can't wait to find out where the story goes from here!

I was given this book in return for an honest review. Xander Styker is a teen who has been abused by his stepfather and his classmates his whole life. The rage that burns inside of him and the self destructive behavior he exhibits, makes you want to take him home with you. I fell in love with the kid right from the start, I love an underdog. But is he? Xander has only had 2 friends in his lifetime, A girl named Estella and the voice in his head, named Trepis. He alienates himself from Estella, but Trepis is always there. He also has a teacher at his school who he is somewhat comfortable with, named Sam, who isn't what he seems. Throughout this story Xander will discover who he really is, who Trepis is and What they both are. Xander is attacked one night by things that he doesn't understand, luckily he is saved by another group of supernaturals. He comes to find out that the things he thought were myths, are actually based in reality and he is a big part of it. Marcus, one of his rescuers, among others, will be his mentor. After an attack on the safehouse and the death of the supernaturals that were there, he is taken by Marcus to Sam, who it turns out is very, very powerful. Xander learns about the Mythos, creatures of all kinds, based on mythology. Xander is a hybrid of 2 different types of vampire and his father was a very powerful vampire as well. He is being hunted. These aren't your everyday vampires though, Auric vampires feed on emotion & energy, Sangs feed on blood. Xander is both. Stan and Marcus only have a short time to train Xander, and during that time he will learn secrets about himself, his family, and the mythos that will change everything. In the end it all comes down to an epic battle that you will not believe. I cannot wait to see where this goes next. I thought this was a very original take on vampires as well as being a refreshing relief from the same old vampire stories

I want to start out saying I rated this 3 stars because it really wasn't my thing. But it had the makings of a good book and people will enjoy this, I just don't. So this may very be a five star read for most people out there. Now that being said, I am going to say different is good, and this is a good book. It just didn't grab me. However the graphic imagery was a nice change, so many people are tending to shy away from graphic scenes in most main stream fiction. Xander's story is filled with pain and emotion and end the end growth all the great things for a book. Nice fight scenes. Why wasn't this book for me? Can't really say, but it didn't grab me at this point in time. I was waiting for something to grab my love, but it just did not happen. It could be because I am vampire burned out (which I don't think is possible I have studied vampire lore for years on my own time) But it just wasn't my read. The issues that Xander faces affect people every day in the real world. And I would suggest giving it a try, but it is dark and not for the faint of heart. This is one of those that you hit or miss... and it could be one that in 2 years I will go back and read again and love (which has happened with more than one book) but for the time being, though it is perfectly written it was just not my cuppa tea.

I am one with a taste for vampire novels. I thought I had read them all. I was wrong. This is a wonderful approach to vampire lore. It has a bold freshness that I have not seen in a very long time. The story it self has the ring of true honesty from the author. It is dark and enticing a book you just cant stop reading. As a woman I utterly fell in love with Xander and I must say the hot guy they have on the cover helps, but it truly is the way he is written. I felt his pain and would offer what ever to sooth his pain. Xander do you like O+ ? LOOK OUT ANNE RICE NATHAN SQUIERS IS HERE!
