Prologue

TWO MEN STOOD IN the middle of a shadowed, barren field. Both were human. One was tall, muscled, with dark hair and a busted-up face. His syn-cotton shirt was torn, his jeans dirty, and his boots scuffed. There were telltale weapon bulges under his arms, at his wrists, and at his ankles.

Clearly, he was the bodyguard.

The other wore a perfectly tailored silk business suit, his Italian loafers freshly polished. His sun-kissed hair was expensively coiffed, and the only bulge he sported was the one in his pocket, where he kept his wallet.

Clearly, he was the money.

Acrid wind shrieked as if someone had cranked a hard rock song on a radio, dancing thick dirt granules in every direction, Money radiated impatience mixed with glee—until two other men materialized a few feet away, and the impatience vanished.

The newcomers had appeared in a blink, without walking a single step: a white-haired Arcadian—an otherworlder with the ability to teleport, among other things—and another human, this one wearing a suit as well, only his was ill-fitting and made from a cheap synthetic fiber.

The human’s arms were cuffed behind his back. He smelled of pungent fear and urine. Poor bastard must have pissed himself.

Without a word, the Arcadian pushed the trembling male to his knees.

Night’s about to get interesting.

The rust-colored sky appeared swollen, the storm-drenched clouds ready to burst. In the center, the sun was a hemorrhaging hook of gold, offering only a fraction of light. That hardly mattered to the witness. From high in the gnarled trees surrounding the field, his gaze cut through the gloom as easily as a knife through flesh.

“You think you can encroach on my territory?” Money snarled down at the kneeler. Another gust of wind created that perfect background music.

“N—no. I just … I … I’m so sorry. I never meant …”

“You never meant to offer New Chicago’s elite prettier girls? Better prices?”

“No. No. You have to believe me. I only thought … hoped …”

“You thought … hoped …” Money sneered. No question, he was a man used to getting what he wanted, when he wanted it. He held out his hand, and Bodyguard smacked the butt of a pyre-gun onto his palm. “Well, your thoughts and hopes just got you killed.”

“No!” Kneeler sobbed like a baby. “Please! Don’t do this. I’ll leave New Chicago. I won’t ever come back. I swear!”

Money nodded to the Arcadian, who jerked his T-shirt over his head and stuffed the material in Kneeler’s mouth. Kneeler shook his head, perhaps to dislodge the cloth, perhaps to attempt another plea for mercy.

Either way, he failed.

“You were right, you know,” Money said, smug now. “You won’t ever come back.” A blaze of yellow light erupted from the barrel of the gun, arrowing out and nailing Kneeler in his chest.

A muffled scream of agony pierced the air. As Kneeler toppled to the ground, twitching, dying as his organs fried to a crisp, Money returned the gun to Bodyguard and wiped his hands in a job well done.

The latest Alien Huntress is a terrific, perhaps the best entry in a strong series

In New Chicago everyone at Alien Investigation and Removal (AIR) laugh at affluent Noelle Tremain who they assume is pathetically weak. However, the so-called spoiled joke Noelle shocks everyone at AIR boot camp training when she handles everything sent her way as her instructors want her eliminated as being too dumb and feeble to be an agent, but the resolute Noelle rejects their Pygmalion Effect.

AIR agent Hector Dean can kill with a feathery finger feels. Thus by default he is a deadly loner. When Nicole is assigned to work with him, he objects as he believes the brass want him to run her off. He is harder on her than the others though that is saying a lot as he roughs all the trainees; but she proves she can handle her 36 Cs as a weapon. Though she promised her BFF Ava that Agent "Mean" Dean was hers, Noelle wants him to see passed her façade while he simply wants her. As the pair team up on investigating the alien murder of Kneeler the businessman, their attraction ignites.

The latest Alien Huntress romantic urban fantasy (see Savor Me Slowly, Seduce the Darkness and Ecstasy in Darkness) is a terrific, perhaps the best entry in a strong series. Noelle makes the story line work as she kicks butt with a tough attitude that uses her feminine assets to win the day. As she and Hector fall in love, both are obstinate with she determined to make them a permanent pair and he determined to remain apart out of fear he will lose control and kill her. This is a character driven action investigative thriller.

    Silly

I haven't read any of this author's other books, but I frankly found this novel silly, with an unbelievable premise and characters who had backstories so tragic as to be laughable. The chemistry between the hero and heroine was okay, but after 200 pages of angsty sexual tension that didn't go anywhere, I just wanted to throw the book across the room. The world-building was also really shallow and unbelievable. Supposedly, it's 100 or so years into the future, with aliens and space travel, but cell phones still operate just like they do today, and you only need a year of training to work for this alien law enforcement bureau. Wait . . . how many years of training to FBI agents undergo, again??

    Say goodbye

Its a great book. Probably the last of its kind in relation to Gena. Per her many statements.....no Dallas book is underway. The Lords books have trickled off to almost nothing. Same with the Atlantis series. She has stopped writing for the longtime adult reader and is now focused on teens and some god-finding spiritual stuff. We are all SOL.

Best in the series so far!

The story picks up where the last Alien Huntress left off with Ava and McKell about to marry and Noelle feeling like she just lost her best friend. Noelle wishes that she could find someone like Ava has and *shocker* shows a bit of a softer side. Noelle and Ava have graduated from their training and are now full fledged agents for AIR. Noelle quickly solves a case through her wits and strength and moves on to another one where alien females are being abducted to be sex slaves. She is partnered with Hector Dean who has a bit of a past himself and closes himself off to any thoughts of love since he has a physical secret that is deadly to those he loves -- or so he thinks.

Hector and Noelle have a love hate relationship and it is fun to watch them spar both mentally and physically. The story takes a unique turn when it comes to virgins that might surprise you. Hector makes the perfect brooding hero while Noelle's past of growing up in luxury was not all it appears. The case that they solve together seems like the beginning a long and positive relationship. Dallas and Jaxon, along with Mia Snow, make brief appearances throughout the book.

Wow! I haven't had my toes curl or wanted to skip directly to the romantic parts in a story in a long time. Showalter really stepped up the hotness in this one. I really felt connected with Noelle and found myself memorizing bits of her dialogue to use at those moments where you need a good comeback. She is smart and snarky with some unpleasant truths of her own that she is hiding. I have a special place for Showalter's books and especially the AI series since it was the first paranormal romance that I read. I don't think these books need to be read in order since each one reflects on a new character, but it would probably help to keep continuity. I also recommend going back to read her YA Alien Huntress series, Blacklisted and Red Handed.

    Love Noelle and Hector

Great story. Wish he learned more about how to control his condition as to not hurt Noelle so much, but I guess it terms of building the story it had to happen. Great work again Gena!!! I wish this series of books could be turned into a HBO or Showtime series! It would knock out True Blood for sure!!!
