Gr 4-7-- Despite a record of achievement that includes two nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize, a long term as the first executive director of the Sierra Club, and the founding of Friends of the Earth, Brower has not been the subject of any books for young readers. This one makes a creditable start toward filling that gap. A surprising omission, however, given Brower's devotion to the art of photography, is the absence of any quality illustrations. The black-and-white drawings, while technically pleasant, lack dramatic intensity. Despite this drawback, and a rather flat writing style, Anker and de Graaf present a competent, informative view of one of the most important conservationists of our time. --Anita Palladino, Finkelstein Memorial Library, Spring Valley, NY
