Overview

A high-tech robot boy enjoys a day of low-tech fun on the farm.

Doug and his parents are off to visit the grandbots. But when their journey is interrupted by some sheep in the road, Doug goes from downloading information about farm animals to actually interacting with them!

Doug gets to learn by doing—he herds sheep, milks a cow, gathers eggs, and then uses good old-fashioned “horse sense” to get their car back on the road.

Doug Unplugs on the Farm is a lively celebration of farm life and the value of hands-on learning that will encourage kids to go screen-free and explore the real world! A terrific companion to Dan Yaccarino’s first book of low-tech learning, Doug Unplugged.

Praise for Dan Yaccarino’s Doug Unplugged:

“Without preaching, [Yaccarino] comments smartly on children’s screen time and the necessity of outdoor play and exploration.” —Publishers Weekly

“Yaccarino is especially good at slipping in the small, nourishing details that are savored upon repeated readings. . . . It’s a sweet tale and true to the anti-technology, analog strain that runs through much of Yaccarino’s work.” —The New York Times Book Review

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
School Library Journal review, October 2014:

"Doug’s childlike enthusiasm for helping while attempting and accomplishing new tasks is delightful. Yaccarino makes an excellent point: learning by doing as well as by studying makes for a well-rounded robot."

Kirkus review, May 2014:

"A fine farm story that doubles nicely as a lesson about experiential learning."

Children's Literature - Vicki Foote
Doug is a young robot who lives in the city, but goes with his parents to the country to visit his “grandbots.” On the way to the farm, everyone plugs in to learn about farms and farm animals. A flock of sheep runs in front of their car, their car goes in a ditch, and Doug and his family become unplugged. Doug sees a farm girl that needs help, so he helps her round up the sheep. He then goes on to milk cows, bundle hay, pick apples, and feed the ducks. He learns about pigs and gathering eggs. He uses the horse to pull his family’s car out of the ditch. When they are back on the road, his mother suggests that everyone plug in again, but Doug decides to stay unplugged because of all the fun he had in his real life experiences on the farm. This amusing little book has simple and bright illustrations that children will enjoy. It could be read aloud to preschoolers, and beginning readers could read it independently. It would be a good addition to home or school libraries. Reviewer: Vicki Foote; Ages 4 to 7.

PreS-Gr 1—Doug returns, adding a new adventure to his list of exploits. In Doug Unplugged (Random, 2013), the small yellow robot with the wine-cork nose learned about urban living. Now, he is on his way to visit his grandbots, who live in farm country. While plugging into the car's computer system teaches him facts about the animals, it is only when an accident causes him to become unplugged that he takes part in hands-on experiences. Herding sheep, milking cows, gathering eggs, and picking apples are some of the new skills he attains. Appealing illustrations, created with brush and ink on vellum and Adobe Photoshop, show bright, bold, solid-colored objects on white space to create eye-catching scenes. Doug's childlike enthusiasm for helping while attempting and accomplishing new tasks is delightful. Yaccarino makes an excellent point: learning by doing as well as by studying makes for a well-rounded robot.—Maryann H. Owen, Children's Literature Specialist, Mt. Pleasant, WI
