Producer David O. Selznick's 's second consecutive Best Picture after the previous year's Gone With the Wind and another enormously popular adaptation of a bestseller, this adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's novel was also the first American film directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Screenwriters Robert E. Sherwood and Joan Harrison recreated du Maurier's novel precisely, complete with the ideal casting of new star Laurence Olivier as brooding Maxim de Winter and insecure neophyte Joan Fontaine as his timid new bride. Rebecca displayed Hitchcock's unparalleled talent for ominous atmosphere, as he derived suspense from the clash between Fontaine and Judith Anderson's coldly sadistic, Rebecca-obsessed Mrs. Danvers. The elaborately appointed Manderley mansion became a character in itself, with Rebecca's expressively lit, diaphanously curtained bedroom, overlooking a suitably wild ocean, evoking her all-consuming absent presence. Selznick's and Hitchcock's attention to detail paid off with eleven Oscar nominations, including Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actress, and it won the top prize as well as an award for George Barnes's cinematography.     Rebecca is about a young woman played by Joan Fontaine who while with her employer Mrs. Vanhopper, Fonatine meets Mr. deWinter (Laurence Oliver), Both Mr. DeWinter and fontaine devolp feelings for each other and the two soon marry. While Fontaine moves to Manderly (Mr. deWinter's estate/home) Fontaine soons learns about Rebecca Mr. DeWinte's late first wife. Fontaine soons learns that Rebecca still has a haunting present over Mrs. Danver (the maid) and Mr. deWinter. This movie is one Alfred Hitchcock's greatest thillers. I would suggest this haunting movie to anyone who enjoys a good mystery with out the blood.

    Fantastic

    This is the very best version of the excellent book. Anybody who loves the book will love the movie, and vice versa. Great classic movie to watch with an intellectual friend.

    A FINE FILM TRAPPED ON A DEFECTIVE DVD

    I was a financially struggling student when REBECCA was first released on DVD by the Criterion Collection. At the time, $39.00 was a bit too much for me to splash out for a copy of one of my favorite films, and I was devastated when the company removed this title from their catalog before I had achieved greater financial security. Needless to say, I was thrilled when I found the new MGM re-release of this classic at my local Barnes & Noble store, and after purchasing the DVD I returned to my home eagerly anticipating an evening of watching Alfred Hitchcock at his best. I wish I could say that the experience lived up to the years of anticipation I felt regarding this moment, but I cannot. Instead of spending an evening in the eerie gothic world created by Daphne Du Maurier and Alfred Hitchcock, I was treated to a defective disc that that caused my DVD player to make a menacing grinding noise as the film attempted to play. Please note that I stated the film ¿attempted to play¿ (if one could actually use this phrase to describe the experience). As my DVD player continued to make a noise that was akin to a food processor attempting to gain the power of flight, the disc¿s play mode randomly skipped and stopped through various parts of film. Horrified, I removed the disc from my player and reached for another DVD (ironically also distributed by MGM) to find out if the fault lay with my home theater system (which had never before reacted in this manner). The other DVD played in the manner in which I have grown accustomed to viewing films (i.e. without scene skipping and an ear drum shattering grinding sound), so the problem I experienced can only be attributed to the geniuses MGM hired to create this latest release of REBECCA. At least I discovered that I was not the only person who purchased a defective disc after reading a review left by another unhappy customer. Hopefully MGM will recall these faulty DVD¿s and rectify the problems, but until such time I find myself wishing I had scrimped a bit on groceries during my student days and purchased a quality edition of this film.

    Untypical Hitchcock

    Rebecca is undeniably a great film, but this is not one of Hitchcock's best works. It is hard for me to classify this movie as directed by Mr. Hitchcock himself, because of the controlling David O. Selznick. Selznick would not Hitchcock be free with his work, and that is why he later started his own production company -that failed. Alfred was more of an assistant director to the producer. There are still the some aspects of a Hitchcockian film, but this is not a complete Hitchcock movie.

    Brilliantly Brought to the Big Screen

    Alfred Hitchcock lost nothing in bringing Rebecca, Daphne DuMaurier's dark gothic romance novel to the screen. Joan Fontaine is the pretty and shy companion to an unsympathetic social-climbing, wealthy woman, Mrs Van Hooper, who seems to enjoy being cruel to Fontaine and putting her down at every turn. When Fontaine meets, falls in love with and marries a rich still grieving widower, you cheer as she escapes Van Hooper's cruelly. But not before she belittle's Fontaine one more time and says out loud what Fontaine is thinking. Why would someone like Maxim deWinter (Laurence Olivier) be interested in someone like her? Fontaine feels no welcome upon her arrival to deWinters Manderly estate. She is greeted by the grim faced housekeeper, Mrs Danver's (played splendidly by Judith Anderson) who seems to hate her on sight. Nor does she feel that she is mistress of Manderly. When Mrs. Danver's calls for Mrs. deWinter on the intercom Fontaine is startled and replies in a confused manner.This movie has many layers. Relationships are blurred. Rebecca's shadow hovers like a mist and lingers in every corner of the house. Everyone appears obsessed with Rebecca even in death. Fontaine finds that Manderly was not as happy as it was professed to be and that Rebecca's fate was the result of her dark side and her secrets. The end is a shocker. This is a must see for classic film buffs. Vannie(~.~)

    Is anyone else having problems with this DVD

    I purchased brand new but movie just skips and skips. wont even play sometimes? whats wrong with this movie. can dvds be lemons too!

    Love this Hitchcock

    This is an excellent black and white film. I love it. I had to have it. It is a great romance and an interesting mystery. I recommend it to anyone who loves old films.

    Cleverly-Crafted

    It is sad that Alfred Hitchcock never won an Oscar. I believe that "Rebecca" was his only nomination. The crafting of this film is what makes it so fasinating. Hitchcock simply added his own brilliance to that of Daphne du Maurier's novel. One can tell how perfectly written the script is based upon the three radio broadcasts that are on this disc. This is one of those films where script, cast, and director blend well together in the art of story telling. This film would be a great addition to anyone's collection regardless of the styles of film one likes. This film crosses many catagories. Whether you are a fan of Hitchcock films, classic films, British films, or just have a collection of award-winning films; this movie will fit.

    A New Lady in the House.

    Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine in a classic black and white movie about an innocent bride grappling with the intrusive reminders of her husband's former wife. Plenty of suspense and mystery surround the couple to keep the audience intrigued. Will grab you and draw you right in.

    This is a great Alfred Hitchcock movie.It was his favorite and it definitely is mine.I have watched this so many times.I'm sure i will keep watching it.Joan fontaine is great in this movie as she always is.

    Rebecca: Not another Chick-Flick

    a great example of film noir, Hitchcock is a kid in a candy store telling the story of a lonely milionare batchelor who meets a professional companion, who is traveling with a friend in Monte Carlo, immediately they take a liking to eachother until he begins to care for her and they dive into a whirlwind romance during the duration of the stay in the Riveria. When the happy couple return to England and the DeWinter family estate things take a turn for the worse as the "little woman" goes poking around, trying to find out why her husbend is so distant.

    Hitchcock - the great

    This is one of Hitchcock's best. Certainly, it is one of my favorite Hitchcock films of all time. I must admit that started to guess the ending, but it turned out that I only guessed part of it, as there was more to the movie then just an understanding of Olivier's character traits. You also had to learn a little more about Rebecca. Great Hitchcock flick!!

    A GROOVY MOVIE!!!!

    Rebecca is a awesome movie! It has everything you want in a movie.... romance,mystery,action,adventure,and some comedy. This has to be Alfred Hitchcock's best work. Joan Fontain and Laurence Olivier give a wonderful performance in Rebecca.
