Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Gregory Baird
A dying man's last words provide the title of Agatha Christie's Why Didn't They Ask Evans?, a 1980 London Weekend Television comedy-laced mystery. Francesca Annis and James Warwick star as Lady Francis Derwent and Bobby Jones, two friends who become amateur detectives when Bobby hears those dying words from a man who has fallen -- or was he pushed? -- from a cliff. These first-time sleuths are driven by little more than curiosity and a sense of adventure, so it's no wonder the mystery often unfolds rather comically. It may also come as no surprise that their investigation seems to be leading toward intimacy. Indeed, there's a rather nice chemistry between Annis and Warwick, which subsequently flowered into delightfully sexy repartee when they starred as Christie's married detective duo in Tommy & Tuppence: Partners in Crime a few years later. While their rapport here is a bit more chaste, the spark is undeniable, and the mystery itself, a rather slowly unfolding and complex affair, keeps them on their toes. The result is a solid detective story with a dash of romance, a splash of action, and seasoned with enough intrigue to keep it enjoyably unpredictable from beginning to end.
