Overview

Everything they knew is gone.

From the raging fires, five men emerge with extraordinary new powers. They must learn how to survive this dark, ravaged world . . . but they cannot do it alone.

Simon Japp will never forget his violent past. But when civilization is all but destroyed, he sees his chance for redemption. Blessed with a strange "gift," he's determined to help the resistance against the Strangers, the mysterious force that stalks them at every turn. He can't afford to get distracted, even by the stunning, soft-spoken woman fighting by his side . . . Sage Corrigan has learned to be careful where she places her trust. But she sees something good in Simon, even if he can't see it in himself. Posing as lovers to infiltrate a group key to their fight, they find that their staged affection soon develops into a desire that will leave them fighting for their lives in the night eternal . . .

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
In Embrace the Night Eternal, the world as we know it has been destroyed by malicious human intent—continents have been rearranged, Las Vegas (Envy) is now on the ocean, immortal Strangers have taken control, zombies and others walk the night, and people try to survive as best as they can. But five men from the past have miraculously survived and emerged with enhanced paranormal powers 50 years later into a postapocalyptic world they could never have imagined. Continuing "The Envy Chronicles" series begun with Beyond the Night (January), this installment takes former hit-man Simon Japp and cult escapee Sage Corrigan, both of whom would like to forget their pasts, on a harrowing journey for the truth (in this case Remington Truth) that leads them back to the community where Sage grew up—with dangerously arousing results.

    Brilliant Book!

    My Review:
Simon was the odd-man-out from the group of men that emerged from that cave in Sedona after 50 years. He was not part of the hiking group. No, he had gone in there to die. Simon was a bodyguard to a mafia crime boss, addicted to drugs and alcohol, and completely disgusted with where his life had led him. He was being chased by henchmen when he stumbled into the cave and had accepted that he was going to die...in fact, was ready for it. When he woke up 50 years later, he decided that this was his chance at a new beginning. No one from this group knows about his past and he is determined to make up for all the bad that he has done.

I didn't realize until I got to reflecting on this book for my review, but there is something really different about these books that I really like. While the books do change POV's between both the hero and heroine, you definitely get a LOT more into the psyche of the heroes. I love that!!!

Simon is infatuated/intrigued with Sage, but so is Theo, and Simon has a personal rule not to tread on another man's property, so as far as he is concerned, Sage is completely off-limits. That becomes much more difficult to maintain when he is suddenly posing as her husband in a commune that believes it is their responsibility to re-populate the world. Even if there were not the barrier of Theo in the relationship, Simon knows that he is not good enough for Sage. He has blood on his hands... a lot of it and, regardless of who he is today, nothing changes that fact.

I loved Simon's character. Regardless of his past, he is a good man who is trying to make up for his past sins. His sense of integrity and honor is so incredibly high. He has a very strong and rigid self-discipline which tells you just how hard his life has been up to now. He wants Sage with an ache that is palpable, but he refuses to give in. He gave his word to Theo that he would keep her safe and whole and he fully plans to do that.

Sage is an interesting character. She's an innocent that has grown up in a really different world. I found it funny about how perplexed she became with Theo's advances because she truly thinks of him as a brother. That doesn't mean that she is dismissive of his attention because she definitely is not...she's just not quite sure what to do with it. What she does know is that Simon's kisses affect her in a totally different way than Theo's do.

This was another fabulous installment in this series. Simon & Sage together are so explosive. The climatic scene between the two of them was nothing short of beautiful. There were several times throughout this book where I was gasping and dh was laughing about how I was reacting to the twists/turns of the story/suspense...that's when you know it's good! ;o)

    terrific urban fantasy

Although the world is not what he remembers having undergone the change five decades ago when he and friends (Dr. Elliot, Quint, Wyatt, and Fence) were trapped in a cave near Sedona without aging, Simon Japp still feels guilty for what he did back then. Still he and his buddies struggle to adjust as they battle the evil Strangers and the deadly Ganga. Elliot having found Jade (see Beyond the Night) is doing the best in their new compound Envy once called Vegas.

Sage Corrigan was born after the "change," but like Simon has a nasty past that haunts her. To survive she and her cohorts at Envy need information on their enemy the Cult of Atlantis and the mysterious Remington Truth. What they know leads to Falling Creek, the last place Sage wants to return to; but she knows she is only one who can get inside along with her pretend husband Simon.

The setting in Awakening Heroes makes the tale as the futuristic world of Ware feels genuine with references back to the old world and the mysterious malevolent Strangers and the Ganga enhance that eerie feeling. Through the flawed lead couple, readers learn more about the post apocalyptic America. Simon and Sage are a wonderful pairing as their respective past psychologically intrudes on the mission and on a future together. Joss Ware is two for two with this terrific urban fantasy.
