Overview

Professor Tikaya Komitopis isn’t a great beauty, a fearless warrior, or even someone who can walk and chew chicle at the same time, but her cryptography skills earn her wartime notoriety. When enemy marines show up at her family’s plantation, she expects the worst.

But they’re not there to kill her. They need her to decode mysterious runes, and they ask for help in the manner typical of a conquering empire: they kidnap her, threaten her family, and throw her in the brig of their fastest steamship.

Her only ally is a fellow prisoner who charms her with a passion for academics as great as her own. Together, they must decipher mind-altering alchemical artifacts, deadly poison rockets, and malevolent technological constructs, all while dodging assassination attempts from a rival power determined the expedition should fail. As if the situation weren’t treacherous enough, this new "ally" may turn out to be the last person Tikaya should trust. Those runes cloak more than mysteries, however, and he’s the only one who can help her unravel them before their secrets destroy the world.

Meet the Author

Lindsay is a professional blogger by day and an indie author by night. She loves fast-paced adventure stories with memorable characters and a touch of romance. Whether she’s writing fantasy, steampunk, or science fiction, she tries to incorporate those elements in her own work (sometimes successfully).

When Lindsay isn't writing, she plays tennis, practices yoga, and gardens (claiming no great proficiency at any of these activities). She lives in the Seattle area where she has many more novels in the works.

Science Fiction, Fantasy and Romance--a must read!

Encrypted is one of those rare cross-genre books that can't fail to please readers of all different tastes. The characters are well-drawn, the danger is very real, and the world is carefully detailed. Buroker's knack for snappy dialogue and sardonic asides ensure laughs. The romance between a self-described klutzy cryptologyst and her mysterious leading man) is very satisfying without ever getting too sweet. All in all, a great read!

I enjoyed this book so much!

This is definitely not your run-of-the-mill, cookie-cutter fantasy--there are a few unique steampunk and sci-fi elements thrown in as well. The characters were fun (my #1 requirement in a book), and the action moved right along--fans of speculative fiction should not be disappointed! I'll be reading Emperor's Edge, the next book set in this world, for sure, and am looking forward to more from Ms. Buroker.

Anyone reading the "Emperor's Edge" series won't want to miss this, but can be enjoyed on its own for what makes all of Lindsay Buroker's books great: humor and fun, good character development, action and adventure. Tikaya is an endearing heroine: smart, funny, accident-prone. Loved the glimpse of young Sicarius. I've read all of Buroker's books now and highly recommend all of them.

Non-stop from beginning to end. Buroker doesn't give you a chance to get bored with this story. I love the characters and I love that none are perfect. The story ties in with some characters from Emperor's Edge.
I hope the next one comes out soon!!

    Great story, great characters

This is a great story with well developed characters - better than many more expensive books. Look forward to reading the rest of her books now that I have found this author.

    more from this reviewer

    Good second choice

By saying this is a good second choice does not mean this is a second rate book, this just was my second ebook to ever read and I am very happy with my choice. This book combines sci fi, fantasy and detective stories nicely. I chose this novel based on those facts and that it is self contained story. The book is worth the time I spent reading it.
