Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Julia Beiker
As the point of view changes from one teenager to another, we learn that the lives of wolves in Minnesota may be coming to a dismal end when Isabel's dad sways a congressman to take the wolf off the endangered list. If that happens the hunt begins, and no one will be safe, especially Sam, Grace and the others. While Sam works to gather up his friends and put them in a safe haven, Cole keeps tweaking his formula that could change them back to their human selves. Which will happen first? Will the wolves be shot and killed or can Sam and Cole save them? This book reads like a teenage soap opera where relationships constantly change and drama fills each of their lives with purpose. I find it hard to believe that young people cannot get their fill of werewolves even if Stiefvater creates a real world for them to inhabit. Does she lure them in with the seduction of being able to live forever or is it considered romantic to bite someone and turn them into a creature for life? Regardless, the book merits a single clap for taking a new twist on an old, overdone theme. Read Shiver and Linger before opening this book. Reviewer: Julia Beiker
School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up—Readers will like much about this conclusion to the series. The love between Grace and Sam grows stronger and stronger, and the pain of their plight is palpable and heart-wrenching. The book begins where Linger (Scholastic, 2010) left off: Grace, thought to be immune to the "werewolf gene," has turned into a wolf, fleeing the hospital bed where she was dying. Much suspicion now surrounds Sam, the last person to see her. And now another local girl, Olivia, has been found dead, ravaged by wolves. Cole St. Clair's life as a famous rock star is at odds with his drug abuse. He sees no reason to live, and becoming a wolf seems like the best solution. But something is keeping him from shifting, so he begins to experiment on himself to find a cure for the werewolf gene. If he can find it, he can possibly save Grace and ensure that Sam is permanently cured. There isn't much time, though, as Tom Culpepper is still out for revenge on the wolves that killed his son. To make matters worse, Grace, the most logical of the bunch, keeps shifting between wolf and human. Sam's character is one to make teen girls swoon as he bakes, recites poetry, and sings love songs to Grace. Cole offers a nice contrast to Sam, with his rock-star charm and reckless ways. There is much action and suspense, although the idea of Officer Koenig riding in to help save the day is a bit far-fetched. The only downside to the story is the ending, which is left open for interpretation. While some readers will like drawing their own conclusions, others may feel let down at the lack of closure. This is not a stand-alone novel; familiarity with the previous two books is a must.—Lauren Newman, Northern Burlington County Regional Middle School, Columbus, NJ
From the Publisher
Praise for Maggie Stiefvater:

"If Shiver left fans wanting more, Linger will have them begging." -Romantic Times

* "Beautiful and moving...The mythology surrounding the wolf pack is clever and so well written that it seems perfectly normal for the creatures to exist in today's world. A must-have that will give Bella and Edward a run for their money." - SLJ, starred review

* "Stiefvater leaves the faeries of Lament and Ballad for a lyrical tale of alienated werewolves and first love....her take on werewolves is interesting and original while her characters are refreshingly willing to use their brains to deal with the challenges they face." - PW, starred review

"All readers will be able to enjoy Stiefvater's fast-paced storytelling and dedication to the old-fashioned art of creating a believable and enduring romance. Shiver is beautifully written, even poetic at times, and a perfect indulgence for readers of all ages." - BookPage

    PLZ READ!

At first i was indecisive wether or not i should read SHIVER. i was so happy i did. Of course for me i was a little unsure about vampires and werewolves. This story is nothing like that. Its a love story, a love story with a twist. And not only do you fall inlove with all the characters but you see the story from their perspective. And it helps you understand the story so much better. At some parts you get so sad, others happy, and just about everything inbewteen. When LINGER came out i went absolutly crazy, another great book from MAGGIE STIEFVATER. and i expect nothing less from FOREVER. I cant wait and hope this won't be the end of SAM and GRACE.

    Good ending for the series!

I was excited to read Forever but sadly I didn't love it as much as I loved Shiver and Linger. The first 200 pages were long and nothing much happened. I felt the beginning of the book was a very long summary of the first two books. However not everything was bad. I liked how Cole and Isabel's relationship developed better than Sam and Grace's. We know Sam and Grace love each other and the only thing stopping them from being together is Grace being a wolf. Nothing else develops between them because is established since book one that they are going to end up together.

So that brings me back to Cole and Isabel. Their relationship is far from perfect because of the way they are. Cole is more free spirited and basically he doesn't give a damn about anything except finding a cure to bring Grace back to her human form permanently. Isabel is a brat sometimes and still suffering from her brother's death. Their personal issues and demons from the past are not allowing them to be together. It was nice to see them growing up and change not only for each other but for their friends too.

The ending was a good way to end the series. I wished there was more to it than how the author decided to end it. To me there is more to be written about the Mercy Falls wolves. Maybe a short story letting us know what's up with the character?

    Left hanging.....!

Why leave such a huge and unresolved ending? Well that completely sucked. What the heck happens to Cole and Isabel? Are Grace and Sam living on the peninsula or what? So many questions left unanswered....and that is the end?

Review Of Forever (Mercy Falls Series Book #3) By Maggie Stiefvater

I loved reading Forever but for me it felt more like another installment rather than a conclusion. I was actually left with more questions seeing as (in my opinion) the ending didn't resolve everything I was hoping it would. I love how Maggie upped the stakes by making the wolves hunted, therefore, it gave the characters added pressure in trying to find a resolution to their plight. I loved the chemistry between Isabelle and Cole. I also enjoyed the evolution of Cole from suicidal to becoming the person he was always meant to be. But, of course, I can't forget about Sam and Grace. They have a love that transcends all things. It is pure in it's innocents and all consuming in their devotion to each other. Grace and Sam are two halves of a whole. They do not work well without each other. When they are together they are capable of great things whether it be for each other or the pack. The ending left such a wide door open (in my opinion) either for a fourth book or a possible spin-off for Isabelle and Cole. If this was supposed to be the last book I wish Maggie would have closed the door tightly and sealed up any cracks that were left over. With that being said, I really did love reading Forever. Yes, I had some ending issues but, if you are a fan of this series like I am, reading this book is a MUST. On a scale from 1-10 I give Forever a 10. Just because the ending wasn't as I had hoped it still didn't take away from how great a book I thought it was. Everyone needs to run out and pick up a copy of Forever. If you are new to this series you really need to pick up a copy of Shiver, and Linger on your way to picking up Forever.

    Notnthe seventeenth!

I was reading some posts and I read one were someone said this was like the seventeenth book in the series, but it is not! They also said that they had stopped reading this series at the fourth book, but this book is only the third in the series, so they are a total liar!

    Amazing.

    Read.This.Series.
It's honestly the best series I've read.
You can feel the emotions the charactes feel.
It's like you are in the book, witnessing what's all happening or you are going through what's happening.
Beats all other 'werewolf' books I've read.
I wish it didn't have to end. I want to know more about Cole and Isabel and I would love to know if Grace is cured at the end and her and Sam live forever happy, but I guess I can imagine what happens which isn't that bad of an idea. :)
Maggie Stiefvater is one amazing author. Please read this, you won't regret it. I promise.

    Disappointing at best

While the first two books in the series were riveting, Forever was a major disappointment. To begin with, the story just seemed to drag with nothing different really happening from where the second book left off. The ending is terrible - the author did not do these amazing characters she spent developing in two entire other books any justice whatsoever. It was vague and left you with a sense of discontentment and unease. These characters deserved a more concrete ending. In fact, it was a cheap way to end the book - leaving it the reader's imagination. I'm sorry to say that I probably will never read another Maggie Stiefvater series again. Waste of time and money.

    WHHAATTT?!?!?!?!

Why would she do that? What kind of author leaves off at a HUGE cliff-hanger and then tells the readers she will not be adding another book to the series? I mean, yeah, its like the bestest book series I have ever read, but that's just my ( and quite a few of my close friends ) opinion. Maggie needs to write another. I have sooooooooooooo many questions that NEED answers. Like, will Grace and Sam ever get married? Will Isabel ever relize that Coel is perfect for her AND super cute? Will Grace get her red coffee maker? Will Coel's cure accually work on Grace and him and Sam, or kill them? Wll Isabel go to Cali? Will Coel go with her if she does? Oooooh the questions that really really NEED questions. If you are reading this, Maggie, PPPLLLEEEAAASSSSEEEE WRITE ANOTHER BOOK FOR THIS SERIES!!!!!!!! And, anyone else who reads this review, please, ask your questions by commenting.
