Overview

As a boy, Brother Andrew dreamed of being an undercover spy working behind enemy lines. As a man be found himself working undercover for God. His was a mission filled with danger, financed by faith, supported by miracles. Told it was impossible to minister behind the Iron Curtain, Andrew knew that nothing was too hard for God. Crossing "closed" borders, he prayed, "Lord, in my luggage I have Scripture I want to take to Your children. When You were on earth, You made blind eyes see. Now, I pray, make seeing eyes blind. Do not let the guards see those things You do not want them to see." And they never did.

For 35 years, Brother Andrew's life story has inspired millions to step out on their own journeys of faith. This young Dutch factory worker's near-incredible adventures testify of God's step-by-step guidance and hour-by-hour provision -- available to all who follow His call. Far from being over, Brother Andrew's current adventures are his most challenging yet. In a new prologue and epilogue, the Sherrills carry his ttory into the new millennium with an account of Andrew's work in the "closed" societies of Islam.

Better than the most exciting spy story! This book contains everything I ever dreamed about come to life! When I was a little girl toward the end of the Cold War, I dreamed of being a missionary-spy into the Soviet Union and Soviet-bloc countries 'particularly Hungary'. This book enourages me so much in living by faith and not sight. God came through for Brother Andrew, and can do the same for believers everywhere!

This book reads like a fast-paced suspense novel, but the fact that it is non-fiction makes every word all the more incredible. God is so real in Brother Andrew's life that he cannot help but convey that reality to the reader. Miracles of the most extraordinary nature happen routinely in this book, and while Brother Andrew is constantly amazed at God's provisions, he seems to also have the attitude:' Why not?' As if to say, our God Jesus is the Creator of all there is and yet why are we still confounded by the fact that He can make 'seeing eyes blind' and 'blind eyes see'!

This book is one that I never tire of, no matter how many times I read it. Whenever I need a bit of inspiration, I often pick up "God's Smuggler" and read a chapter or two. It is a wonderful, engrossing story of a man who truly gave himself to the work of the Lord, and therefore witnessed the mighty, miraculous power of God in his daily life. I heartily recommend this book for grown-ups and children alike. An edge-of-your-seat thriller!!!

I love this book , the way its told I'm there with him and all the smugglers. The humor the love, seeing God protect these most precious people was breath taking. Not in amazement of what God will do , but, in the fact He's alive today and he loves us so much, that is amazing to me. We don't deserve it.

From the beginning to the end, GOD'S SMUGGLER will change your life. A powerful message of God's call on one man's life. This book stirred me to a deeper faith. Anything is possible with God.

God's Smuggler by Brother Andrew is an exciting, true story about Brother Andrew's many evangelistic trips behind the Iron Curtain. Andrew was a young man looking for nothing but adventure. He never found it, until he put his trust in God. Why shouldn't he trust Him? He got him through the toughest borders with bibles and literature. He even got through the borders that were supposed to be impossible to get though. This book is awesome! I could hardly put it down! I would classify this book as a Christian adventure book. I think that the youngest to the oldest Christian reader will enjoy this book.

I have read this profound, intense book time and again for thirty odd years. It is life behind the real Iron Curtain.

I loved this book when it was first released 35 years ago--finding this anniversary edition is like finding a long lost friend. It's a wonderful account of this man's journey.

This book really took me by surprise. I am neither evangelical nor Christian, but I found myself turning the pages and wondering what would happen next. The book follows the life of Andrew. Readers experience his childhood, his military life, his time in Indonesia with locals and monkey, his first love, his marriage to an unlikely beau, his conversion to Christianity, and his call to the missions field. I should note that the parts of the book that focus on Andrew's beau and wife are written in a classy manner. There is nothing graphic, and it is appropriate even for young readers. The innocence of true love is conveyed and nothing more. As for the missions, readers feel as if they are on a CIA mission as they follow Andrew through several communist countries. Places where Bibles and preaching are illegal make the book even more suspenseful. Most intriguing of all are the small coincidences that lined up with Andrew's prayers. This book is a must-read for people of all faiths. Also included is an interview with Andrew about more of his travels and even a section of photos. While there are no graphic details, the book does mention people dying, so sensitive readers should be warned.

This is an updated edition of a book that I grew up with! I remember finding it on my parent’s large set of bookshelves, curling up into our large recliner to read, and being fascinated by the story of Brother Andrew. It became one of those books that stuck with me over the years, foundational in how I viewed the world, and understood my faith. And now, to have the opportunity to read the expanded edition, to know more of the story, was indeed a highlight of my reading this year! If I ever need a reminder of just how faithful God is, and how securely He holds and guides the lives of those who trust in Him, all I need do is read about Brother Andrew, or George Müller – another great man of faith and obedience to God whose stories I grew up with, and have recently been reading about again. I love the way Brother Andrew’s friend put it, when he brought word of supernatural provision, and was met by human logic and doubt about how things would work out. “I’m not arguing the logic of the case. I’m just passing on the message.” How many times do I read the promises of the Bible, or hear words of encouragement and promise in prayer, and because they don’t seem logical to me, or I forget just how much bigger God is than the momentary things I am dealing with – and I doubt? Many, I’m sorry to say. This simple statement of faith and truth really resonated with me, helping me to regain a true focus in my life. Having clarity of purpose does not always mean having full scope of the path ahead. But that’s where faith and obedience lead the way, and you get to see the fantastic things God will do through you in His plan. Again, a friend of Brother Andrew summed it up so clearly: “That’s the excitement in obedience,” he said. “Finding out later what God had in mind.” Many times, I have seen myself and those around me get so caught up in looking ahead and trying to map everything out, that we forget we are not called to make sure everything works out today, tomorrow, and five years from now. That’s not our job, only God is big enough to handle that. We are only to follow our calling and purpose today; and then tomorrow, follow it again, wherever God leads. What a great relief it is to remember that I’m not in charge, that I don’t have to take on the whole load! It’s a reminder that I feel many in the Church community need to hear again today. The extra chapters and the annotated pictures at the end of the new book were amazing! I loved getting to know how the story continues up to present day – and it was comforting to see that it does continue to present day. Often we can think of great works of God as “back then”, but here is a clear reminder of how active and faithful the work is even into the 21st century. This book is so encouraging, and it definitely is a call to action, stirring up passion within the reader. I highly, fully, recommend it! I received a review copy of this work from the publisher through NetGalley

I don’t like biographies. I just do not like them, they bore me. But, this book was amazing. I cannot think of enough words to describe it. It had me hooked from the very first chapter. Brother Andrew’s faith was so so inspiring and encouraging. The miracles that God preformed in his life literally brought tears to me eyes. I believe every Christian, young or old, should read this captivating story. On the book cover, it says “more thrilling than a spy story.” That could not be more true. From Brother Andrew’s time in war, to smuggling a Bible bedtime the Iron Curtain, it was all way more thrilling than any spy story I have read. His story proves that no matter what your past, what you have done, God still loves you and He wants to use you. God can and will forgive you. The description says it will “inspire a new generation to step out on their own journeys of faith.” That’s definitely what this book done for me. ***I was sent this book by the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

Brother Andrew: Still Opening Doors As a child of the Cold War era, I learned a chilling fascination for anything to do with “The Iron Curtain.” When my high school music teacher started spending her summer vacations on short-term missions trips to Eastern Europe, I was certain that I, too, would be called to minister in lands closed to the Gospel, so I began to prepare by copying all my record albums onto cassette tapes (more portable) and by reading everything I could get my hands on about the Soviet Block countries. I held my breath through God’s Smuggler by Brother Andrew — close calls at the border crossings with Bibles hidden in every nook and cranny of his V.W.; expulsion from Yugoslavia by the secret police; his holy boldness in defying regimes that were bent on snuffing out the light of truth in their land. Sixty years after Brother Andrew’s first trip, an expanded version of God’s Smuggler has been released with an epilogue that chronicles his thirty-plus years of ministry in the Muslim world. As the head of a world-wide ministry called Open Doors, Brother Andrew is still working to encourage and strengthen the persecuted church. The work has expanded from simply smuggling Bibles to also providing training for church leaders, offering small business loans to encourage Christians to become financially independent, and advocating for those who have been unjustly imprisoned. Although, at age 86, Brother Andrew is no longer travelling, he is still on the offensive with an aggressive Great Commission prayer ministry. A Christian classic with over 10 million sold, God’s Smuggler is a fascinating biography set in a unique period of history in which the church found grace to grow in spite of persecution and hardship. Alongside stories of bravery and sacrifice are the humorous accounts of playing cat and mouse with Communist officials, inspiring tales in which money appeared from an unexpected source in tandem with an unforeseen need; and a quietly heroic marriage that withstood the strain of frequent separations with the continual threat of arrest and imprisonment. Corry and Andrew’s mantra was: “We don’t know where we’re going, but we’re glad we’re going there together.” Although the Iron Curtain is now a relic of the past, there are still places where followers of Christ are paying for their beliefs with their freedom and even with their blood. While I never did receive that call to be a missionary, I still read Brother Andrew’s Prayer of God’s Smuggler with the same heart-felt response that came when I first read it at age sixteen: “Lord, in my luggage I have Scripture that I want to take to Your children across this border. When You were on earth, You made blind eyes see. Now, I pray, make seeing eyes blind. Do not let the guards see those things You do not want them to see.” God’s Smuggler is a call to action on behalf of the persecuted church and a call to prayer on behalf of those who faithfully serve. Andrew grew up in a poor, but loving family in Holland. Years later found Brother Andrew sneaking behind the Iron Curtain to secretly deliver Bibles to the believers trapped there. Smuggling Bibles isn't without peril and hardships. But Brother Andrew was granted miracles and beautiful friendships with people all over the world that enabled him to spread the message of love to people who were starving for the message. I read this book years ago and couldn't put it down. So I was delighted with a chance to read the newest addition with the extras that were added to it. It's still a captivating story that inspires and convicts the reader. The writers have written the story to thrill the reader, but also to show the depths of love and great lengths that God will go to, to read His children. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good story, but also those who have a burden for spreading the word of God. I received this book free of charge from Chosen in exchange for my honest review.

I recently finished reading God's Smuggler by Brother Andrew. Wow! What an incredible read! This was such an inspiring and fast-paced book! Brother Andrew's life has been full of breathless and exciting moments- all because he said "Yes" to God's call. I remember my mom reading this to my sisters and me when we were all little girls. I can recall thinking to myself how scary all those moments of smuggling Bibles must have been. It was a nostalgic read for that very reason, and I showed my mom this new edition with a great deal of excitement. I don't think I've ever flown through a non-fiction book like I have this one! Exciting, challenging, and heart pounding until the very last page! I received this book from the publisher in exchange for my fair and honest review.
