Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Taken from the pages of Nickelodeon magazine, this charming children's comic overflows with humor, adventure and whimsy. It's the first day of school, and kids are reading their summer vacation essays. Julie has the most interesting tales: they involve shark hunting, rocket ships and hot-air balloon chases. She takes off on the high seas with her Grampa, a famous ichthyologist, in search of the world's largest shark. Adventure abounds, with pirates, penguins, conferences, a trip to Antarctica and eventually, far-off planets where Grampa is idolized. Czekaj's sense of the absurd is fine-tuned: spotting a chicken and a squirrel in a life raft, Grampa guesses they're rappers based on the sign they carry: "Will bust fresh rhymes if rescued." Later, Grampa and Julie are rescued themselves, by Gramma, who shows up in a rocket ship. "You have a rocket?!" Julie asks her. "Of course. Every Gramma does. We just don't brag about it." Julie is a resourceful kid: her knowledge of how to open jars of peanut butter comes in handy, while a baking-soda-and-vinegar bomb threatens everything around it. While youngsters will enjoy the breakneck pace and underwear gags, there's some level of satire for every age. Czekaj's art is simple-two ovals and a crescent make up his characters' entire emotional range-but readers won't notice as the story flies by. (Aug.) Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
KLIATT
Julie and her Grampa are looking for Stephen, the world's largest shark. During their search, they make lots of friends—MC Squirrel and DJ Chicken, the world's worst rappers; a colony of Ocean Monkeys; a pair of felines who want to turn Stephen into cat chow; the inhabitants of Planet Purple (who are purple themselves); a pair of Abominable Snowmen; and a big green whale. Julie's Gramma, who is training for the Olympics, lends them her rocket ship when Stephen gets blasted into outer space. Julie's Grampa runs around a lot, shows his underpants to the world, and provides comic relief. Of course, Julie is smarter than the grownups, and she uses her knowledge of third-grade science to save the day when she opens a peanut butter jar by putting it under hot water and uses a potato to generate electricity. Grampa & Julie: Shark Hunters is for younger teens (it could also go in the children's section); I wouldn't recommend it for readers past the sixth grade. This graphic novel contains lots of action and bad jokes, so readers won't be bored. Grampa and Julie's adventures are chronicled every month in Nickelodeon magazine, so this series will be known to some of your patrons. Recommended for collections that cater to younger YAs. KLIATT Codes: J—Recommended for junior high school students. 2004, Top Shelf, 128p. illus., Ages 12 to 15.

    Funny book encourages reading.

My nine year old grandson and I just finished reading this book. He found it laugh out loud hilarious and couldn't wait to get to the next page. He enjoyed the story lines and illustrations and so did I. It is a mix of fantasy, whimsy and how kids have to deal with everyday things and some zaney relatives.
