Meet the Author

H.P. Lovecraft (1890-1937) was born in Providence, Rhode Island, the city where he lived most of his life. He began writing poetry and fiction while an adolescent and contributed significantly to amateur press publications. In 1923, he made his first professional sale to Weird Tales, the pulp magazine that would publish most of his fiction. Five years later, Lovecraft published “The Call of Cthulhu,” a story that crystallized his concept of cosmic horror through its depiction of otherworldly monsters that represent the incomprehensible alienness of the universe to human thinking. In “The Dunwich Horror,” “The Whisperer in Darkness,” “The Haunter of the Dark,” “The Shadow out of Time,” “At the Mountains of Madness,” and other stories, Lovecraft further developed this unique approach to horror fiction, and created an elaborate mythology of alien creatures, forbidden books, and haunted New England towns to give it shape. The Shadow over Innsmouth, the sole book of his fiction published in his lifetime, appeared in 1936. Since his death, Lovecraft has become recognized as the greatest American writer of supernatural fiction after Edgar Allan Poe, and a leading influence on the modern weird tale.

    The COMPLETE Lovecraft

I picked this up today. What a steal for the Lovecraft fan! This book contains ALL of HPL's fiction, including stories he wrote as a child, fragments, prose poems, and his long essay on supernatural literature. Yes, the book lacks those revisions of other writers' stories, but I've never considered them the real thing anyway. At $13 there is no reason to buy the various paperback editions or Arkham House hardcovers. The book is nicely made: hard covers, sewn, and finally a cover with art you won't be embarassed by.

    Get it while you can!

This volume is a must. It's among the nicest of the series because it's a complete collection and the font is totally manageable (not like Melville or Tolstoy where they had to cram a bunch of epics into 1000 pages),

Then there is the content of the book. This was my first exposure to Lovecraft and all the hype in the world couldn't have prepared me for how dope he is. Stories like THE DUNWICH HORROR, AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS and THE CALL OF CTHULU hit at the core of our collective search for humanity in a way that no other author that I've experienced has. Lovecraft has earned his place in the pantheon of my favorite authors of all time. I hope this book remains available for as long as possible.

    DEAR LORD!

I agree with earlier reviews and comments. This book is obviously on high demand, as its used prices are so high. Barnes and Noble really did something amazing when they published this stunning anthology and must have gained some profit due to how well it sold. I also have been told that this item would be back last fall, only to be disappointed. It seems to me that the library of essential writers series has ended, while this is a shame I think that the loss of this tome is a greater shame.
It would be nice to see Barnes and Noble republish this volume, maybe they could import it into their Leather Bound Classics series, that would be something amazing.
I suppose my final question is to the B&N big wigs. What are you guys thinking? Bring this book back already.

    H.P. LOVECRAFT-COMPLETE AND UNABRIDGED STORIES

One reader complained of typos. These did not detract from the stories themselves. I found the stories to be very entertaining. I enjoyed the way that Lovecraft wrote in the era in which he lived. I especially enjoyed the content of his stories. I have always wanted to find a complete tomb of his stories, and this book fulfilled my desire. I highly recommend this book for all who enjoy the Cthulu Mythos.

NOT OUT OF PRINT-BEWARE EBAY AND BOOKSELLER SCAMS

I purchased my copy 3/08/09 at my local Barnes & Noble for $12.95 plus tax, less than $14. If you see copies on sale for $32 on Ebay or booksellers for $50 or more, do not throw away your money on book that is still in print.

    BUY THIS BOOK NOW!!!

    H. P. lovecraft was an absolute genius! Some of his stories chilled me to the bone, and I couldn't turn the light out or put this book down until the story was over. I would think to myself, "OK, just finish the next story...and the next...and maybe the next one too!" I was up late for a whole week reading this book. I highly recommend this book to science-fiction lovers. It isn't exactly traditional sci-fi, but its surreal quality is unmatched!

    I Also Recommend:

    Quite Possibly, Inimitable

In my humble opinion, the stories of HP Lovecraft are incredibly difficult to find in a definitive, encompassing edition. Indeed, most books claiming to be "THE COMPLETE HP LOVECRAFT" instead will further their nom de plumes under a more disheartening nature, e.g. "THE BEST OF HP LOVECRAFT". For the Lovecraft connosieur, this is, inevitably, saddening. You already HAVE read the "best of" (subjectivity?) HPL, but want to continue reading his unparalleled portrayal of cosmic nihilism, and the fantastically unaware and numinous universe. He really is, undoubtedly, a unique writer.

Enough about HP LOVECRAFT, let's get to the book. This book, in my opinion renders all other editions obsolete. None other can boast of such an unbeatable price, such an impressive plethora of material, and a format increasingly difficult to find at low prices. This edition will single handedly clear the playing-field.

    AMAZING

This collection of stories is my absolute favorite. They are creepy, weird, and out-of-this-world. Lovecraft is a bit wordy at times, but he still gets the message across. My favorite one is "The Temple" because it has many red herrings that lean towards supernatural events. Lovecraft = Master of Sci-Fi. He doesn't use a lot of dialouge either.
