A haunting series that will stick with you long after the last page is turned

The Hunger Games (Trilogy) is one of the most "unputdownable" books to enter the teen market in a long time. The cliffhangers at the end of each volume are so intense, you can't help but continue on. Knowing this in advance, I decided against reading the series last summer despite the fact that everyone was talking about it. I waited the extra year, and I'm glad I did--even a week was torture when it came to getting my grubby mitts on a copy of Mockingjay.

For the record, this isn't a series for everyone. You will be drained emotionally by its end. The Hunger Games is one of the grimmest dystopian worlds I've encountered in literature. A lot of characters die, and their deaths aren't pleasant. This series may not be for you. Then again, those who know me well would say it's not for me, either. I'm one of the most squeamish people you'll meet, and The Hunger Games more closesly resembles the movie Battle Royale than I thought it would when I started reading. I really enjoyed the series, though. There are scenes so poignant, they'll stick with me. Between this and Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy, I've found that even squeamish ole me can still enjoy a disturbing book if it's thought-provoking and well-written.

Now that I've warned you about the contents, let's move on to the meat of this review. It's hard to go in-depth without giving a lot away. A brief synopsis for the uninitiated:
The trilogy takes place in the future. The USA has been destroyed; in its place is Panem, which consists of thirteen districts and a Capitol city. Before the series begins, the districts revolt against the Capitol and are defeated; the thirteenth is completely obliterated. As retribution for their crimes, each district is now required to send a boy and girl, called tributes, to participate in the annual Hunger Games. The games are centered around survival; there can only be one winner (Luckily, most of the deaths occur off-page, so it makes it easier for the squeamish to read). The characters are very rich and detailed; some of their deaths hit incredibly hard and are forever memorable. In the second book, Catching Fire, there is a lot of unease in the districts, and a lot of anger when the year's Hunger Games take a twisted turn and past winners are forced to battle it out for survival. The final book, Mockingjay, consists of a full out rebellion; the districts are at war with the Capitol and it's do or die in a showdown so explosive, readers never see it coming.

All in all, I'm personally glad I've read this series and wouldn't change a thing. I'm glad I didn't sidestep it due to its violent nature and extreme situations. This trilogy is one I'll read again to delve into the intricate layers I know Collins has laid out for us. Collins is a master at capturing a society at war and showing the horrors that come when a corrupt government is in control.

    Read or die.

This amazing book trilogy can't be missed. The characters are real, the world beautifully crafted. So wonderful even adults can't put them down. It's a moving story that can catch anyone's eye, full of plot twists that have been perfectly placed, and little details that make the world come to life.

    Wonderful Series!

I can't say enough about this series. It is a wonderful blend of action, drama, romance and suspense. I spent the last few day sneaking in a few extra pages every chance I got; at work, while cooking dinner, while giving my daughter a bath. I haven't been this engrossed in a story since The Twilight Series. I know some reviewers stated they didn't care for the final book, Mockingjay, but I thought it was an excellent and very unpredictable ending to the series. The final pages had me in tears. I absolutely love this series!

Must Read!!! It will not dissapoint you!!!!

The Hunger Games Trilogy is a must read. It made me laugh, cry, smile, and do so many other things that only a few books will have me do. When Collins wrote about everything you just had to know what happened next. It was a page turner and I couldn't stop.

I COULD NOT PUT THESE BOOKS DOWN!!!

This trilogy is the best thing to hit bookshelves in a long time. I read "The Hunger Games" in one sitting, and then reread it immediately, it was that good. And before "Catching Fire" came out, I read it again. And before "Mockingjay" came out, I read the first two again. I COULD NOT STOP READING THESE! (clearly!) This is definitely a must read. I felt pain and joy and sorrow and confusion along with Katniss and all of the other characters. I cried at the happy and sad times (mostly at the sad). I cried when I finished "Mockingjay" because I knew it was the end. The story told throughout these three books is so moving and intriguing and un-put-downable. I've read moving books before, but I couldn't believe a story could make me feel this much. And it wasn't just the plotline; the characters, the problems, the "supporting" characters, things people said, all of it was amazing. And a lot of the moral values in this book can be applied to our lives today. It's a warning for things that could happen in the future if power falls into the wrong hands. Some of the things said in "Mockingjay" hit something inside me and I can't believe someone else who I've never met could affect me so intensely. I felt that I was Katniss and was being forced to make all of these impossible decisions and do these impossible things. I still can't believe how amazing these books are. They are definitely for a higher maturity level, but I think it's impossible to outgrow them. Definitely good for teens. Though it is fiction, it's definitely not your "fantasy" vampires and dragons and fairies story, but I don't see how anyone could NOT like these books. I wish I could give more than five stars, possibly an infinite amount? Because these books definitely deserve them all. And THANK YOU SUZANNE COLLINS for bringing these books into the world!!! I know that's cheesy, but it's well deserved!

    BLEW ME AWAY!

From the moment i read the first page of the first book, i wasn't able to put it down. Luck was with me though as i was sick and staying home from school and had plenty of time to indulge in this masterpiece of a series! Suzanne Collins has truly outdone herself! <3 I can't put into words the feelings I feel for these three books! I cried the whole hour i spent reading the last three chapters of "Mockingjay" (the last book), I was both furious and crushed at the same time... If you don't read these books you will regret it and will have missed the best trilogy to ever hit the bookshelves! I am a really big Twilight fan, like a die hard twilight fan and i can proudly say that "the Hunger Games" are the BEST books I have ever read, even better than The twilight series. BUY THEM. NOW.

    Wonderful series!

I usually think utopian society type books are terrible and rarely hold my interest. However, this series absolutely blew me away! I didn't expect to utterly and completely fall in love with the characters and each character truly held a piece of my heart and as the series continued, I thought my heart would crumble to bits from fear of losing those characters and facing the unknown without them. Suzanne Collins is a truly remarkable author and I am just so blessed to be able to enjoy her works.

    HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I would definitely recommend this series to any reader. My brother read the books when they first came out and had briefly mentioned for me to read them and I sort of brushed it of because I was so engrossed in The Twilight Saga but I finally decided to read the trilogy since a couple of my friends read it and told me I would love it. To my surprise my friends and brother were totally right..this series is absolutely amazing. Let's just say I finished all three books in TWO DAYS. That's how good they are. They are definitely page-turners and I literally could not put them down for anything, for the two days that it took to read them I did not want to do anything except read read read! I'm completely obsessed, it's the type of books that will leave you hanging with your mouth open in shock after you're done. Definitely makes you think a lot. I would totally read the series again and again and am so looking forward to the movie in March of 2012, hopefully they be will as good as the books! Although we all know the books are always way better then the movies..I'm holding up head up high for this one!

    First book was good.

After reading the first book in this series, I was amazed. Normally, though I am a teen myself, I stay away from teen series because of predictable and tame plots. Hunger Games? No where near! I knew that Katniss somehow had to come out on top, but as the games neared their end, I still didn't know how she would do it. Her inner dialogue was amazing, quite similar to a few people I know, which made it believable. I didn't know there was a sequel at first. After tasting the story, there never should have been one. I went out and bought the second one last Christmas after hearing about it. I started reading it. At page 100 I grew sick of the book, threw it back on my shelf, where it remains unfinished to this day. The book series went from an amazing new view on teenage fiction to the same bland story that I'd read and thrown down so many times before. To be honest, I felt like I was reading another sappy romance novel, not the action filled Games of the first book. To be honest, it was more sappy than the Twilight series. Even after having friends explain to me the plot of the last two books to see if there is a reason to suffer through book 2, I see no point in continuing my reading and tainting the memory of the first. Save yourself the time. Read the first book, forget the existence of the last two.

    AMAZING!!!

These books are truly amazing. I couldn't put them down! I read the first and second within one month, and read the third one in a month by itself, just because I wanted to do my English project on it. The Hunger Games trilogy is really not only for teens, but for adults, too. Before I read these, I was completely obsessed with the Twilight saga. I really didn't think I would like any other books, but I picked up The Hunger Games, and I fell in love with it. I was overwhelmed when I read Catching Fire, just because it was so good. I would say that if anyone wants to read these books, please do. :)

    Eh...weak.

Perfect for the 1 or 2 teenagers who aren't too busy texting to actually crack a book. Their parents, however, should wait until this either goes straight to DVD or is dragged out into an unwatchable mini-series on Lifetime. Wife loved it though!

    A New Classic!

I think this trilogy of books will really stand the test of time. I got them originally from the library but decided I must own them so bought this boxed set. I think they are keepers that I will revisit and re-read again and again. I don't usually read YA but if it had not been categorized that way I never would have known as it is a complex writing and subject. I can't wait to see what this author does next! I highly recommend buying this as this spectacular price as I won't be lending mine out ;)!
