Jackson Godspeed is the hottest young Angel in a city filled with them. He's days away from becoming a full Guardian, and people around the world are already competing for the chance to be watched over by him. Everyone's obsessed with the Angels and the lucky people they protect - everyone except for Madison Montgomery.

Maddy's the one girl in Angel City who doesn't breathlessly follow the Angels on TV and gossip blogs. When she meets Jackson, she doesn't recognize him. But Jackson is instantly captivated by her, and against all odds the two fall in love.

Maddy is swiftly caught up in Jackson's scene, a world of glamour, paparazzi - and murder. A serial killer is on the loose, leaving dead Angels' wings for the police to find on the Walk of Fame. Even the Guardians are powerless to protect themselves in the face of this threat . . . and this time it's up to Maddy to save Jackson.

Speer, a music video director, makes a solid literary debut with a romantic thriller set against the backdrop of a transformed Los Angeles, a true City of Angels. A century ago, angels revealed themselves to the world. Soon after, they began charging (exorbitantly) for their protective services and have become the ultimate celebrities, commanding immense wealth, power, and popularity. When hottest-of-the-hot angel Jackson Godspeed meets waitress Maddy Montgomery, it’s a Cinderella story with a twist. The media goes wild, but their families forbid the burgeoning romance for reasons that hark back to the angels’ darkest secrets. Accurately hitting on celebrity-obsessed culture and the dichotomy between the glitterati and everyday people, Speer blends romance and mystery to deliver a fresh take on the “angel novel,” first in a planned trilogy. The author draws on several of the more well-trod aspects of the paranormal genre (hidden destinies, forbidden love), yet strong writing, well-rounded characters, and an enticing hook in the form of the mercenary/celebutante angels breathe life into the world Speer has created. VOYA - Stacy Holbrook
In present-day Los Angeles (known as Angel City), Angels live as celebrities, saving humans who have the money to be protected. Unlike most of Angel City, seventeen-year-old Maddy is oblivious to the gossip blogs and television networks that follow every move the Angels make. When Jackson Godspeed, "Jacks," comes into her uncle's restaurant late one evening, Maddy does not recognize him as the famous, golden boy Angel about to be commissioned as a Guardian. Maddy sees Jacks for who he is instead of his celebrity status, and the two instantly make a connection. In an unprecedented move, Jacks saves Maddy's life, an act that could have him mortalized and killed for saving an unprotected human. But the Angels are not the only beings after Jacks; he is also being hunted by a demon summoned to kill Angels. It is up to Maddy to save him. Immortal City is the first book in a new series with an intriguing premise. It is a supernatural romance with an action-oriented mystery sure to entice readers. While the plot is fast paced, the writing style can be confusing. Immortal City follows three story lines in third-person limited narration by Maddy, Jacks, and a police detective who leads the hunt for the demon. As the story lines converge, the narration often switches from limited to omniscient within the same chapter, causing the writing to seem choppy. Even so, this book will be popular and is recommended for middle and high school libraries. Reviewer: Stacy Holbrook

Gr 8 Up—As residents of Angel City (aka Los Angeles), guardian angels are more famous than Hollywood stars. Constantly trailed by paparazzi, they throw lavish parties, wear designer clothes, and even have their own TV network. Jackson Godspeed, a hunky angel from an influential and wealthy archangel family, is about to become the youngest Guardian in history. But when he saves Maddy, a high school girl who is not assigned to him, their instant attraction causes turbulence in their very different worlds. Though their relationship is forbidden, the pair is determined to stay together despite the flashing bulbs, disapproving relatives, and the fact that Jackson is a suspect in a spree of angel murders. The protagonists are better developed as individuals than as a couple; their abrupt romance smolders despite them not knowing anything about each other. The angels are not at all religious, and God is completely removed from the equation. The premise is interesting, but the slow-paced story will appeal only to the most die-hard fans of angel-centered novels, such as Lauren Kate's Fallen (Delacorte, 2009) and Becca Fitzpatrick's Hush, Hush (S & S, 2009). The characters, events, and plot elements are typical of paranormal romances, complete with flawless immortals, a seemingly normal human girl, instant attraction, an annoying best friend, a jealous ex-girlfriend, a spoiled little sister, and insufficient parental guidance. The murder mystery seems tacked on simply to add intrigue to a story that reads more like an extended episode of TMZ. A complete miss.—Leigh Collazo, Ed Willkie Middle School, Fort Worth, TX
Kirkus Reviews
A world that worships not angelic Hollywood stars but actual angels proves familiar. Guardian Angels exist, but they only help people with enough money to pay for their exorbitantly expensive contracts. They lead the lives of the glitterati in Angel City, the Hollywood of this celestial-infested world. Jackson Godspeed is Angel City's favorite, a hunky 18-year-old A-lister whose every date is featured on the celebrity programming of both A! and the Angel News Network. When Jacks and his Ferrari wind up in hiding (from the cops, from his ex-girlfriend, from the media) in a scruffy diner in a bad part of town, he meets Maddy, a gruff, high-school student and waitress. The connection between Maddy and Jacks is electric and inevitable. Through the rest of their adventure--running from serial killers, fighting demons, posing for cameras, discovering corruption among the ranks of the Guardian Angels, learning the truth about old murders--they dance around each other, admitting then denying their sexual tension. Maddy's early commentary on the classist structures making up her world are entirely subsumed in the sensual reveling in celebrity: brand names and sports cars; powerful male Angel leaders and sexy female Angel models. The necessary revelation of Maddy's deep, dark secret (no everyday girl, she) will surprise no one. An overfull crossover between paranormal romances, hard-boiled–detective stories and Gossip Girl novels. (Fantasy. 13-15)

An Immortal City Novel (Book One), by Scott Speer, Penguin Group, April 2012. Angels not only live among us, but they are treated like rock stars. They marry other angels, have children born immortal, and the most talented among them become guardian angels. You can have their protection whenever you need it. Just pay a hefty monthly fee, plus a $100,000 bonus when you're saved, and you can escape from certain death. If you're extremely wealthy or win a protection lottery, you're golden. If you're poor and can't pay for protection, you die. Welcome to Los Angeles, the City of Angels, where glamorous angels live in luxurious hilltop villas and are treated like royalty. It's commissioning week for a new round of guardian angels, and all TVs in the city are tuned to Angel News Network or the A! television channel for the most up-to-date info on our favorite angels. This year all eyes are on Jackson Godspeed, the youngest, brightest and hottest angel being feted. Mortal girls and women swoon at the sight of him, and even high school girls across town can't stop reading the latest gossip about Jacks. Despite all the angel accolades and celebrity status, someone or something is killing guardian angels and hacking off their wings. Only angels can kill other angels, but the dead angels are first made mortal and killed after their wings are removed. Jacks leaves a commissioning party early on the night the first bloody wings are discovered and becomes a person of interest. His stepfather, Archangel Mark Godspeed, orders him off the street until he can come to pick Jacks up. So Jacks pulls into a small diner across town, walks into the place to hide awhile, and meets Maddy Montgomery. It's her Uncle Nick's diner and she's the only waitress on duty. Jacks tries to be incognito, but ironically, Maddy may be the only girl in the whole LA area who doesn't know who he is anyway. Maddy works hard, keeps to herself and helps her uncle when she's not in school. Her parents died when she was a baby, and she's lived with her uncle ever since. Her best and only friend is Gwen, a fellow senior at Angel City High, who tries to get Maddy out of her shell and boring day-to-day existence. In fact Maddy's whole life has been unspectacular, that is, until the night she meets Jackson Godspeed. Jacks has gotten anything he's wanted his whole life, except for Maddy. She doesn't stroke his ego or fall at his feet like other women. She's unlike anyone else he knows, which intriques him. He has always been pursued, but to win over Maddy, he has to become the pursuer. I love this book, and here's why. With it's unique plot and far from stereotypical characters, Immortal City offers a fresh take on what has become a stale angel-focused sub-genre. Jacks and Maddy grow up in significantly different social and economic classes, yet they each struggle with their own family issues and personal expectations. Both of them have family secrets that, once discovered, connects Jacks and Maddy and significantly affects their future. And Speer does a great job hiding the identity of the murderer. I had no idea who was killing the guardian angels until the final reveal. If you're looking for a cool mystery with interesting characters, a unique paranormal plot, and a story you can't put down, then I highly recommend you buy and read Immortal City. (Although it's a series, this book doesn't end on a cliffhanger!) In a city that idolizes immortals like Jackson Godspeed he is the hottest angel around. He has always been in the spotlight and in a week he will be the youngest Guardian ever. Everyone in the world is lining up to pay so that he will keep them safe. Now that he is so close to his dream he has to be sure not to be distracted by the parties, paparazzi or the red carpets. What he never planned on was Maddy. Maddy is seventeen-years-old and she is proving to be the distraction that Jackson doesn’t need right now. Maddy is everything Jackson is not used to, down-to-earth and not really into the angels. She sees Jackson for the person he is and not the angel everyone else sees and certainly not as a celebrity. Even with their vastly different backgrounds they have a connection that defies explanation. A connection that is threatened when something deadly tries to destroy their chance at love. There are those that don’t worship the Angels and would love to see them brought down. Out there is a killer that is murdering Guardians one at a time. Now Maddy is going to have to find a way to save Jackson because he is now in the killer’s sights. This story has a very different take on angels. It will also suck the reader in and won’t let them go until the very last page. The story line is very engrossing and the mystery in it will have readers wondering who is behind everything and just what will happen next. With several different suspects to choose from this one will leave the reader guessing until the very end. This story has some great twists and turns and the reader never knows where they will end up next. While it seems like a sizable book the pace is so fast that the reader will be at the end before they know it and will be dying to have the next book in this series. This is a young adult book that even adults will love.

Best book in the world!!! I read this when I was out shopping. I saw the hard back cover and decided to pick it up. And i'm sooo glad I did. Scott Speer creates amazing plot twists and describes things very well. The ending of the book is sort of expected, but I think Scott really builds up the excitement. Overall, great book. Please read it!
