In the Shadow of the Wasatch
This lifelong, fictional journey begins in a 1950s neighborhood outside Mormon Church headquarters in Utah, where children are expected to conform to conservative standards that sharpen their growing pains. Though this block of boxy houses experiences more than its share of tragedy, it also offers plenty of opportunities for good times common among Baby Boomers. Most stay within the cultural mold created by The Church, yet some rebel once free of parental fetters, not always landing in the most comfortable places. From the sidelines of the dominant culture, Suzanne Cook maneuvers her way through social and family challenges that put her in the Sandwich Generation, another milestone on her way to self-realization, acceptance and forgiveness. While never a mother herself, she devotes a major share of her life caring for needy family members before focusing on herself. Issues of education, religion, death, sexual identity, marriage, child custody, abuse, Alzheimer's disease, old age and more are explored in this novel.
