Chapter One

January

• *

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11

January 1

Come to Me with a teachable spirit, eager to be changed. A close walk with Me is a life of continual newness. Do not cling to old ways as you step into a new year. Instead, seek My Face with an open mind, knowing that your journey with Me involves being transformed by the renewing of your mind. As you focus your thoughts on Me, be aware that I am fully attentive to you. I see you with a steady eye, because My attention span is infinite. I know and understand you completely; My thoughts embrace you in everlasting Love. I also know the plans I have for you: plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Give yourself fully to this adventure of increasing attentiveness to My Presence.

Romans 12:2; Jeremiah 29:11

January 2

Relax in My healing Presence. As you spend time with Me, your thoughts tend to jump ahead to today's plans and problems. Bring your mind back to Me for refreshment and renewal. Let the Light of My Presence soak into you, as you focus your thoughts on Me. Thus I equip you to face whatever the day brings. This sacrifice of time pleases Me and strengthens you. Do not skimp on our time together. Resist the clamor of tasks waiting to be done. You have chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from you.

Psalm 105:4; Luke 10:39-42

January 3

Refresh yourself in the Peace of My Presence. This Peace can be your portion at all times and in all circumstances. Learn to hide in the secret of My Presence, even as you carry out your duties in the world. I am both with you and within you. I go before you to open up the way, and I also walk alongside you. There could never be another companion as devoted as I am.

Because I am your constant Companion, there should be a lightness to your step that is observable to others. Do not be weighed down with problems and unresolved issues, for I am your burden-bearer. In the world you have trials and distress, but don't let them get you down. I have conquered the world and deprived it of power to harm you. In Me you may have confident Peace.

Psalm 31:19-20 (NASB); John 16:33 (AMP)

January 4

I want you to learn a new habit. Try saying, "I trust You, Jesus" in response to whatever happens to you. If there is time, think about who I AM in all My Power and Glory; ponder also the depth and breadth of My Love for you.

This simple practice will help you see Me in every situation, acknowledging My sovereign control over the universe. When you view events from this perspective-through the Light of My universal Presence-fear loses its grip on you. Adverse circumstances become growth opportunities when you affirm your trust in Me no matter what. You receive blessings gratefully, realizing they flow directly from My hand of grace. Your continual assertion of trusting Me will strengthen our relationship and keep you close to Me.

Psalm 63:2; Isaiah 40:10-11; Psalm 139:7-10

January 5

You can achieve the victorious L I F E through living in deep dependence on Me. People usually associate victory with success: not falling or stumbling, not making mistakes. But those who are successful in their own strength tend to go their own way, forgetting about Me. It is through problems and failure, weakness and neediness that you learn to rely on Me.

True dependence is not simply asking Me to bless what you have decided to do. It is coming to Me with an open mind and heart, inviting Me to plant My desires within you. I may infuse within you a dream that seems far beyond your reach. You know that in yourself you cannot achieve such a goal. Thus begins your journey of profound reliance on Me. It is a faith-walk, taken one step at a time, leaning on Me as much as you need. This is not a path of continual success but of multiple failures. However, each failure is followed by a growth spurt, nourished by increased reliance on Me. Enjoy the blessedness of a victorious life, through deepening your dependence on Me.

Psalm 34:17-18; 2 Corinthians 5:7 (NKJV)

January 6

I am able to do far beyond all that you ask or imagine. Come to Me with positive expectations, knowing that there is no limit to what I can accomplish. Ask My Spirit to control your mind, so that you can think great thoughts of Me. Do not be discouraged by the fact that many of your prayers are yet unanswered. Time is a trainer, teaching you to wait upon Me, to trust Me in the dark. The more extreme your circumstances, the more likely you are to see My Power and Glory at work in the situation. Instead of letting difficulties draw you into worrying, try to view them as setting the scene for My glorious intervention. Keep your eyes and your mind wide open to all that I am doing in your life.

Ephesians 3:20-21; Romans 8:6; Isaiah 40:30-31 (NKJV); Revelation 5:13

January 7

It is impossible to praise or thank me too much. As it is written, I inhabit the praises of My people. Sometimes your adoration is a spontaneous overflow of Joy, in response to radiant beauty or rich blessings. At other times your praise is more disciplined and measured-an act of your will. I dwell equally in both types of praise. Thankfulness, also, is a royal road to draw near Me. A thankful heart has plenty of room for Me.

When you thank Me for the many pleasures I provide, you affirm that I am God, from whom all blessings flow. When adversity strikes and you thank Me anyway, your trust in My sovereignty is a showpiece in invisible realms. Fill up the spare moments of your life with praise and thanksgiving. This joyous discipline will help you live in the intimacy of My Presence.

Psalm 22:3 (KJV); Psalm 146:1-2; 1 Thessalonians 5:18

January 8

Softly I announce My Presence. Shimmering hues of radiance tap gently at your consciousness, seeking entrance. Though I have all Power in heaven and on earth, I am infinitely tender with you. The weaker you are, the more gently I approach you. Let your weakness be a door to My Presence. Whenever you feel inadequate, remember that I am your ever-present Help.

Hope in Me, and you will be protected from depression and self-pity. Hope is like a golden cord connecting you to heaven. The more you cling to this cord, the more I bear the weight of your burdens; thus, you are lightened. Heaviness is not of My kingdom. Cling to hope, and My rays of Light will reach you through the darkness.

Psalm 46:1; Romans 12:12; Romans 15:13

January 9

I am with you and for you. When you decide on a course of action that is in line with My will, nothing in heaven or on earth can stop you. You may encounter many obstacles as you move toward your goal, but don't be discouraged-never give up! With My help, you can overcome any obstacle. Do not expect an easy path as you journey hand in hand with Me, but do remember that I, your very-present Helper, am omnipotent.

Much, much stress results from your wanting to make things happen before their times have come. One of the main ways I assert My sovereignty is in the timing of events. If you want to stay close to Me and do things My way, ask Me to show you the path forward moment by moment. Instead of dashing headlong toward your goal, let Me set the pace. Slow down, and enjoy the journey in My Presence.

Romans 8:31; Psalm 46:1-3 (NKJV); Luke 1:37

January 10

Every time you affirm your trust in Me, you put a coin into My treasury. Thus you build up equity in preparation for days of trouble. I keep safely in My heart all trust invested in Me, with interest compounded continuously. The more you trust Me, the more I empower you to do so.

Practice trusting Me during quiet days, when nothing much seems to be happening. Then when storms come, your trust balance will be sufficient to see you through. Store up for yourself treasure in heaven, through placing your trust in Me. This practice will keep you in My Peace.

Psalm 56:3-4; Matthew 6:20-21

January 11

Trust Me by relinquishing control into My hands. Let go, and recognize that I am God. This is My world: I made it and I control it. Yours is a responsive part in the litany of Love. I search among My children for receptivity to Me. Guard well this gift that I have planted in your heart. Nurture it with the Light of My Presence.

When you bring Me prayer requests, lay out your concerns before Me. Speak to Me candidly; pour out your heart. Then thank Me for the answers that I have set into motion long before you can discern results. When your requests come to mind again, continue to thank Me for the answers that are on the way. If you keep on stating your concerns to Me, you will live in a state of tension. When you thank Me for how I am answering your prayers, your mind-set becomes much more positive. Thankful prayers keep your focus on My Presence and My promises.

Psalm 46:10 (AMP); Colossians 4:2; 2 Peter 1:3-4

January 12

Let Me prepare you for the day that stretches out before you. I know exactly what this day will contain, whereas you have only vague ideas about it. You would like to see a map, showing all the twists and turns of your journey. You'd feel more prepared if you could somehow visualize what is on the road ahead. However, there is a better way to be prepared for whatever you will encounter today: Spend quality time with Me.

I will not show you what is on the road ahead, but I will thoroughly equip you for the journey. My living Presence is your Companion each step of the way. Stay in continual communication with Me, whispering My Name whenever you need to redirect your thoughts. Thus, you can walk through this day with your focus on Me. My abiding Presence is the best road map available.

Exodus 33:14; John 15:4-7

January 13

Try to view each day as an adventure, carefully planned out by your Guide. Instead of staring into the day that is ahead of you, attempting to program it according to your will, be attentive to Me and to all I have prepared for you. Thank Me for this day of life, recognizing that it is a precious, unrepeatable gift. Trust that I am with you each moment, whether you sense My Presence or not. A thankful, trusting attitude helps you to see events in your life from My perspective.

A life lived close to Me will never be dull or predictable. Expect each day to contain surprises! Resist your tendency to search for the easiest route through the day. Be willing to follow wherever I lead. No matter how steep or treacherous the path before you, the safest place to be is by My side.

Psalm 118:24; 1 Peter 2:21

January 14

Let Me bless you with My grace and Peace. Open your heart and mind to receive all that I have for you. Do not be ashamed of your emptiness. Instead, view it as the optimal condition for being filled with My Peace.

It is easy to touch up your outward appearance, to look as if you have it all together. Your attempts to look good can fool most people. But I see straight through you, into the depths of your being. There is no place for pretense in your relationship with Me. Rejoice in the relief of being fully understood. Talk with Me about your struggles and feelings of inadequacy. Little by little, I will transform your weaknesses into strengths. Remember that your relationship with Me is saturated in grace. Therefore, nothing that you do or don't do can separate you from My Presence.

1 Samuel 16:7; Romans 8:38-39

January 15

My Face is shining upon you, beaming out Peace that transcends understanding. You are surrounded by a sea of problems, but you are face to Face with Me, your Peace. As long as you focus on Me, you are safe. If you gaze too long at the myriad problems around you, you will sink under the weight of your burdens. When you start to sink, simply call out "Help me, Jesus!" and I will lift you up.

The closer you live to Me, the safer you are. Circumstances around you are undulating, and there are treacherous-looking waves in the distance. Fix your eyes on Me, the One who never changes. By the time those waves reach you, they will have shrunk to proportions of My design. I am always beside you, helping you face today's waves. The future is a phantom, seeking to spook you. Laugh at the future! Stay close to Me.

Philippians 4:7; Matthew 14:30; Hebrews 12:2

January 16

Come to Me, and rest in My loving Presence. You know that this day will bring difficulties, and you are trying to think your way through those trials. As you anticipate what is ahead of you, you forget that I am with you-now and always. Rehearsing your troubles results in experiencing them many times, whereas you are meant to go through them only when they actually occur. Do not multiply your suffering in this way! Instead, come to Me, and relax in My Peace. I will strengthen you and prepare you for this day, transforming your fear into confident trust.

Matthew 11:28-30; Joshua 1:5, 9

January 17

Come to Me with a thankful heart, so that you can enjoy My Presence. This is the day that I have made. I want you to rejoice today, refusing to worry about tomorrow. Search for all that I have prepared for you, anticipating abundant blessings and accepting difficulties as they come. I can weave miracles into the most mundane day if you keep your focus on Me.

Come to Me with all your needs, knowing that My glorious riches are a more-than-adequate supply. Stay in continual communication with Me, so that you can live above your circumstances even while you are in the midst of them. Present your requests to Me with thanksgiving, and My Peace, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your heart and mind.

Psalm 118:24; Philippians 4:19, 6-7 (NASB)

January 18

I am leading you along the high road, but there are descents as well as ascents. In the distance you see snow-covered peaks glistening in brilliant sunlight. Your longing to reach those peaks is good, but you must not take shortcuts. Your assignment is to follow Me, allowing Me to direct your path. Let the heights beckon you onward, but stay close to Me.

Learn to trust Me when things go "wrong." Disruptions to your routine highlight your dependence on Me. Trusting acceptance of trials brings blessings that far outweigh them all. Walk hand in hand with Me through this day. I have lovingly planned every inch of the way. Trust does not falter when the path becomes rocky and steep. Breathe deep draughts of My Presence, and hold tightly to My hand. Together we can make it!

John 21:19; 2 Corinthians 4:17; Habakkuk 3:19

January 19

Seek My Face, and you will find more than you ever dreamed possible. Let Me displace worry at the center of your being. I am like a supersaturated cloud, showering Peace into the pool of your mind. My Nature is to bless. Your nature is to receive with thanksgiving. This is a true fit, designed before the foundation of the world. Glorify Me by receiving My blessings gratefully.

I am the goal of all your searching. When you seek Me, you find Me and are satisfied. When lesser goals capture your attention, I fade into the background of your life. I am still there, watching and waiting; but you function as if you were alone. Actually, My Light shines on every situation you will ever face. Live radiantly by expanding your focus to include Me in all your moments. Let nothing dampen your search for Me.

Psalm 27:8 (NKJV); Philippians 4:7 (MSG); Jeremiah 29:13

    Moved to tears

My Spiritual life has been suffering so much lately.. I won't go into details, but I haven't been to church in well over 6 months. I have been missing and longing for that connection with God. When I cracked open this devotional, from the first page, every verse has been so helpful. Tears ran from my cheek as I read the very first devotional. It is exactly what I needed.

There is a devotional for each day by date. I never can seem to read them that way. I always seem to start with Jan. 1 even though it's almost June. Mrs. Young really speaks from her heart and has done a beautiful job writing this devotional. It reads the way I would personally talk to God. I think it is absolutely wonderful.

    5 stars... buy worthy.

    A Great Devotional

    A Great Devotional
    Jesus Calling
    Seeking Peace In His Presence
    By Sarah Young

This book is a devotional to be read throughout the year, but I cheated and read a lot of it over the last few weeks.

Normally I don't like gift books because they tend to be superficial and useless, and deviotionals have left me flat as well. This book excels in both areas and was a great surprise.

For starters, it's beautifully made and should last for generations if cared for. It feels good in your hand and is small enough to read, but the type is nice to look at and large enough to read easily.

The text is written in the first person, from the person of Jesus. I'm not sure what I think of this to be honest. I'd be scared to do it. But Young claims that these messages came to her during her daily quiet time with Jesus and the messages are theologically sound, backed up by Scripture. And it works for me. Each message reinforces what I know from Scripture, but having it presented to me as if the Lord were telling me these things makes reading each day more profound. It's hard to explain but I look forward to reading it each day.

I reccomend this to someone looking for an excellent devotional or even as a gift to someone that wants to understand Scripture more easily.

(This was a promotional copy from Thomas Nelson. That said, I give honest reviews.)

    Inspiring but presumptuous

No doubt that Sarah Young has written an inspiring, beautifully penned short pieces of writing based on Sarah's own personal journey notes where she claimed are based on God's impression upon her heart. Her writings were written in first person pronoun, so that, as the readers read them, it is as if, God is speaking directly to them. Whether those words are the direct results of God's speaking to her, no one can verify as they are subjective and personal.

Although these notes are scripturally based, but, I do find her to be rather presumptuous of her to relay those words to the readers as if God is speaking to them in the exact manner and arrangement. Our God is a God of creativity and He can use any part of the Bible at different times and in different manner to speak to different people of different background through the Holy Spirit. The danger of these kinds of writings would be to promote readers to rely on reading them exclusively and not through the Bible. A good devotional writer would be one who would encourage his/her readers to depend and rely more and more on the Holy Bible to understand the guidance and will of God with the help, guidance and illumination of the Holy Spirit, Thus, serving pieces of writing like these would be as if she is serving pieces of chewed food for re-ingestion.

Therefore, although these writings are inspiring, the readers should ultimately rely on the Holy Spirit and the Bible alone and not through secondary means in order to draw close to God.

    GREAT GIFT BOOK!

This is a wonderful daily devotional, a little book that is amazingly spirit-filled with the Lord speaking deep into your soul! It brought me deep peace and joy. It is beneficial and exciting to first read how Sarah Young came to write JESUS CALLING, how her daily discussion with Christ turned into dialogue. Read this slowly and purposefully, as she suggests. Great gift book!

All who are weary, read this book

If you've ever just wondered, "How can God expect me to get through this day?!" you need to get this book. It's a devotional book that will teach you about the bigger plan God purposed in His heart for all people to seem Him, His love, and then spread it through a fallen creation. It's full of praise, prayer, and petition to God for a discerning mind and heart throughout the year. Daily lessons are short enough to read on-the-go, but encouraging and inspiring enough to help you make it through your day with a cheerful and thankful heart. Read the introduction if you get this book - it's meaningful to the context of her words.

Jesus Calling - Enjoying Peace in His Presence

This is a very encouraging, gentle devotional. The 365 daily devotions are written in first person - God speaking to the reader and encouraging them to put aside their worries and concerns and focus on Him.

Each day contains a brief 2 paragraph devotion with 2 - 3 Bible references lists (verse references only, not the text).

This devotion is particularly suited for someone who is experiencing difficulties or stress in their life (eg illness, relationship or family difficulties etc). The tone is very warm and creates a very comforting and calming feeling for readers, encouraging them to focus on connecting with God and experiencing his peace in the midst of the chaos of everyday life.

This isn't a challenging devotional, but rather one that reminds readers that God is faithful even in times of trial and that the peace of His presence can be experienced even in difficulty or hectic times.

    Touching

From page one its touched my heart. It starts out with my favorite bible verse that alone to me is a sign from God that I was meant to read this book. I know that I've been feeling an emptiness that only God can fill and just reading the first days already makes me feel closer to him in a way that I haven't felt in a long time.

Best devotional I have ever used!

This is an awesome daily devotional. Every day it seems to speak to exactly what I need. Bible verses are included with each section that back up what is written in the daily devotional. I have bought so many of these books to give away to friends because I have found it to be so good! Check it out, you won't be dissapointed.

Great way to start the day!

I love this devotional. I'm not a "devotional" type of person, but I do love reading this little book. It reads just as if it were written to me personally!! I would encourage all to begin (or end) their day with spending a few minutes reading this wonderful book.

God's-love-in-a-book! One page each day is all I need to set my course, and focus my attention on the Lord. I keep this gem in my purse! The best money I've ever spent on a book.

    The perfect devotional

I've found this book to be the perfect devotional. I'm so impressed with it that I'm planning to purchase it for my friends and family members as gifts for Christmas this year. Each day is thought provoking. Not shalllow. Yet they are short and the scripture references give you guidance to study if you choose.

    BEST DEVOTIONAL EVER!!

I Love devotionals and usually have a stack of 2 or 3 by my bedside table stacked on my Bible. Since recieving this one I have gotten rid of the stack and now I just let the words of this book work into my heart and soul and set free the chains of this present darkness. Cheers to Sarah Young for listening to a King Who still speaks!!! All Glory to the King of Kings!!!!

    Life changing, healing, restorative book!

A friend gave me this book at a time when I needed it most. Several friends had talked about how good it was..."I gave this to my husband, and after reading it, he said it spoke to him. but why did I like it? I told him it spoke to me too!" was one quote. The first day I read it it hit exactly on what I needed. It has been that way every day! I have to hold myself back from reading ahead. It's like my little reward every morning; I can't wait to read it first thing! Thank you for writing it.

    A MUST Read!!

This book was a gift to me at a time when I was going through several hardships and also looking for a church where I could worship and find fellowship with believers in Christ. This is the best devotional book I have ever read. I cannot start my day without it. I really feel as if Jesus were talking directly to me. Each daily devotion brings me such comfort, hope and peace. I anxiously look through my bible to read the scriptures at the bottom of the daily devotion. I have had this book for three years now and continue to read it every day. I have shared this book with several co-workers and they now have this book. I will be sending one as a Christmas present this year to a close friend who is going through cancer treatments. God Bless you Sarah Young for this life-changing book!

    Inspiring

Read every day before i even get out of bed. Different from many daily devotional type books because it is in first person - as if Jesus was speaking directly to you. Amazing how on some days it is as if He can read what is on my mind. A daily reminder of His place in my life. Strengthens relationship with Jesus. Highly recommend!

    Amazing!

I 'happened' to pick up this book in 2009 as I was looking for a devotional book as one of my bridal shower gifts for a young lady who does not have a lot of time. I opened the book to the current date and read it. I nearly felt 'goosbumps' as I felt that Jesus was standing right behind me - whispering the words from that day to me and it was powerful how the words met me - right where I was that day emotionally and spiritually.

I have since given this book to 5 people. Of course, every day does not relate to where you will be on any given day, but there are more days where the entry is a 'direct hit' than not.

I know this type of powerful impact does not come without a cost so I thank Mrs. Young for being obedient to the Spirit of Christ and writing this devotional. I read a lot of devotionals and will not always read all that I have each day - but I rarely miss day of Jesus Calling.

Great book as a daily devotional

This book is exceptional. You feel that Jesus is talking directly to you. This book is great to start your day. I have purchased several copies of this book and have given them as gifts. Everyone has loved it and talks about it to others. You cannot go wrong with this book.
