Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kristin Harris
Maisy loves music and she has a band. The band is practicing because they have a concert tonight. Maisy bangs on the drums; Charlie strums on the double bass; Eddy the elephant strikes his triangle; and Cyril plays the trumpet. The singers are practicing too. Each page features a tab that moves a paper-engineered portion of the page to mimic the instrument being played. A pull down tab moves Maisy so her hands bang on her drum and her foot plays the cymbals. Charlie and his bass dance on the page when activated. Tallulah uses both hands as she plays her pink piano. The grand finale is a pull-out pop-up of the whole band on stage. Everyone loves Maisy. Characters are created in a delightful style of simple, painted illustrations that are bold and colorful. This book for very young readers seems to be designed to hold up to little hands manipulating the pull-the-tab actions. Reviewer: Kristin Harris; Ages 2 to 6.
Kirkus Reviews
Budding musicians and singers can join in the rehearsals as Maisy gets her band and backup chorus together for a house concert. Being particularly big and sturdy, the pull-tabs should survive the workout (for a while, at least) as Maisy beats on a drum, Charlie the crocodile energetically "strums" his double bass, and other band mates warm up on piano, trumpet and triangle. With the notable exceptions of a twang from Charlie's bass (thanks to an internal elastic) and a great whack produced as Eddie the elephant whales away on his triangle, the instruments themselves don't sound off. Nevertheless, each spread's large-type caption features onomatopoeic words--"Plinkety-plonk! Tallulah plays the pink piano"--and exclamation points! that will encourage audiences to bring the noise in high volume. A huge pull-down flap on the final spread reveals the whole ensemble, onstage and ready to…well, not rock as the band's strictly acoustic, but at least belt out some hot folk or pop tunes. An effervescent companion to Maisy's Show (2010). (Pop-up/picture book. 2-5)
