Overview

Whether your home is small or large, an apartment in the city or a country cottage, it is a space that should be at once beautiful and livable. The key to that is managing the upkeep without feeling flustered. Until now, there has never been a comprehensive resource that not only tells how to care for your home and everything in it, but that also simplifies the process by explaining just when. With secrets from Martha Stewart for accomplishing the most challenging homekeeping tasks with ease, this detailed and comprehensive book is the only one you will need to help you keep your home looking its best, floor to ceiling, room by room.

In Martha Stewart’s Homekeeping Handbook, Martha shares her unparalleled expertise in home maintenance and care. Readable and practical -- and graced with charts, sidebars, illustrated techniques, and personal anecdotes from Martha’s decades of experience caring for her homes -- this is far more than just a compendium of ways to keep your house clean. It covers everything from properly executing a living room floor plan to setting a formal table; from choosing HEPA filters to sealing soapstone countertops; from organizing your home office to polishing your silver and caring for family heirlooms.

Martha Stewart’s Homekeeping Handbook is organized for clarity and maximum practicality:

Room by Room covers the upkeep of the appliances, tools, furnishings, and surfaces found in each room, from the entryway to the kitchen, from the attic to the laundry room.

Throughout the House instructs the reader on the proper ways to routinely clean and periodically maintain everything in the home, including dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, polishing, scrubbing, waxing and much more.

Comfort and Safety focuses on techniques to ensure your home is running properly and safely, such as recognizing when to clean vents, fixing a leaky faucet, and eradicating pests.

A-to-Z Materials Guide provides an invaluable resource that explains the unusual materials that many favorite objects are made of -- from abalone to zinc -- and how to care for them so they last.

Encyclopedic yet friendly, Martha Stewart’s Homekeeping Handbook is a seminal work -- a must-have for everyone who wants a well-cared-for home that will endure for generations.

    An Excellent Resource

Although the recommended cleaning schedules are perhaps a bit ambitious, this book is an excellent reference tool for caring for just about every part of a home.

    Excellent primer or refresher

Even as a married woman of 20 plus years, I found this book extremely helpful in organizing and getting the basics for cleaning. With all the products out there, it is hard to figure out what works and what is marketing hype. If you are young and just starting out or never were taught these by your mother this is a great reference book. I now have neatly organized closets thanks to Martha. It may seem old fashion, but what is old fashion about having a home that is comfortable, clean and inviting without spending all your time off getting it accomplished. I keep it handy for reference too.

    Thanks Martha!

Wish I knew these things 13 years ago

This book is absolutely wonderful. I cannot seem to put it down. If anyone ever had a new year resolution of becoming more organized then this is the book to buy. I will definetely give as gifts for brides and grooms to be. Lots of helpful hints for all the men in our lives too. Like how to make a bed and folding clothes, towels, and those good ole fitted bed sheets. Even great tips on preparing how to pack for a move to a new home.Everything and everything you ever needed or wanted to know. Martha did not miss a thing.

Full of useful tips and information

This is a wonderful handbook. It addresses organizing, cleaning, and maintaining practically every room, surface, and furnishing within the home. I have followed Martha's tips on cleaning with kitchen staples rather than store-bought cleaners. I'll be buying very few commercial cleaners from now on. There are also TONS of other useful tips and information. This is a great purchase!!!

    love the book

I normally don't buy many books but I had to buy this. I am fairly new to taking care of a home instead of an apartment and this book has given me so many ideas plus tips for maintaining and taking care of a home. It makes me want to organize and not have clutter.

    more from this reviewer

    Martha Stewart saves civilization

This book is very detailed. It covers everything in the house including caulking the tub. There are also obscure but useful things like illustrations identifying all the fancy bits of cutlery, i.e. fish forks, salt spoons, ect. I think Martha Stewart is saving us all from losing our civilization to clutter, grime, and stains.

    A Treasure for every homeowner!

Every homeowner should own this book. I bought one for myself then bought one for my daughters and daughter-in-law to read and enjoy. It makes everyday housework easy and not a boring chore! Can't recommend it enough. A perfect gift for any bride-to-be.

The only thing missing is that I wish there was more on fix-it and repairs of all kinds.

I keep the book handy and look up things even though I have been keeping my own house for almost 50 years. Good no-nonsense information.

    Not Just a Cleaning Book!

This is a wonderful encyclopedia for all things that make a home: from fabric identification to building material ID, bathroom design to guestroom design, dinnerware placement to home office arrangement, waterspot removal to furniture scratch repair. Every young person establishing their own domain should have this book, and most of the relatives too.

    Something for Everyone

As a 'homekeeper' for many years, I found this book, now my official wedding shower gift, full of helpful information. I love the black and white photos--so classy, so Martha. I gave it to my daughter and daughter-in-law for Christmas and they were thrilled. This book has it all.

    A MUST HAVE

The title is not a cheat: this book IS an essential guide in anybodies home. Since purchased, I read it at numerous occasions, and learned things that I did not even think I had anything to learn about (for instance, when handwashing silk shirts put vinegar in the rinsing water, avoiding this way leftover spotting of the detergent). This very well organized book presents easily accessible information written in a down to earth manner. This book is unlike some might expect, in the sense that it covers essentials, not only fine details. It is for everybody's use, disregard to budget, styles, preferences. This book provides options to base your decisions on. This book talks about topics you might think are common sense, but trust me, even then you learn. And sometimes I find that I saved myself time by reading it before tackling whatever I wanted or needed to be done (like cleaning my freezer). This book makes a great gift.

Everyone with a home needs this book

I really enjoy my Martha Stewart Book. These are the things that are just not taught from generation to generation like they used to be. Too many people spend so much time outside of their homes that we have forgotten how to properly take care of the inside. A wonderful easy to read guide for anyone male or female.

What about caring for stains such as ink on clothing?????

Maybe I could not find the one think that I needed to get the ink out of my jacket, forgive me, I thought this was Martha's Cleaning Bible....sometime later I will find time to go through and make use of some of the other worthy suggestions for cleaning....

All you would expect from Martha!

This 'weighty' volume is a virtual treasure trove of information for anyone caring for a home or anything in it. Room by room guides, routine cleaning, periodic maintenance, comfort and safety are all addressed within. There's even a chapter to help you navigate a move. An alphabetized materials guide tells you how to care for everything from abalone to zinc. In plain, practical fashion it gives simple directions for each step. I find it a very helpful resource.

Every bride should have this book

Martha Stewarts Homekeeping Handbook is a real must for your household. Even if you think that Martha's ideals are out of reach for you, or 'over the top', when all is said and done, she is spot on with all of this information. I remember reading all the old books my grandmother had on homekeeping and this is a necessary update to all of the outdated ideas and brings in the new with our homes changing so much. Technology and products play into all of this and it truly is a book for someone who just has a room or a little place, a cottage or any size 'home', just as Martha says. In a perfect world, if we did all organize our homes, care more for them, maintain them as only Martha knows how to do, our lives would be so much easier and ourselves and our families would be so much happier. Using this book around the home with your children is a great legacy to pass on , don't forget, they will have their own place someday too.Just when you think it's all been done, and you think that Martha will exhaust you, she does it again with ease, and you have to stop and say 'thank you, Martha' for caring.

This book is the most comprehensive homekeeping handbook available. It's a great addition to any resource library. Topics range from how to furnish rooms and clean different stains, to which and how long financial records should be kept.

    Martha succeeds again.

Martha Stewart's Homekeeping Handbook is a book every household should have. It contains just about everything a person would need when looking for solutions to household problems. The book not only has solutions for problems that may arise but it also shows the every-day care and up-keep of various items and areas throughout the home. This would be a perfect gift for newlyweds or it would make a great housewarming gift. Personally, I love having on hand just one book where I'm certain to find the information I need. I highly recommend this book! Wendy
