In South Carolina, Greendale County Sheriff's Office Lieutenant Logan MacRoy is excellent at several law enforcement specialties including arson investigator, forensic chemist and bomb expert. However, he conceals from his colleagues his roots as the offspring of King Arthur the vampire and Queen Guinevere the magi. A dormant vampire, Logan has not made the move to become bloodsucker. Recently chemist Giada Shepherd has become a full majae. Arthur assigned her to keep Logan safe from a serial killer murdering the latent with the caveat not to engage in sexual activity with his offspring as that would trigger the vampiric conversion. Giada's only ally is the mystical ancient Smoke the cat who assists her, but he cannot keep her and Logan from being attracted to one another. This is a terrific entry in the Mageverse urban fantasy series (see Master of the Night and Master of the Moon) as the mortal son of King Arthur and Queen Guinevere is under attack while recently promoted majae chemist Giada risks her life and her heart to protect him. Fans will enjoy this pairing as the romance is hot with sexual healing while an insidious killer goes after Logan using magically enhanced bombs with no concern about collateral damage yet also the overarching theme moves forward. This book was a good way to spend a Saturday afternoon. It was a little formulaic, a little too predictable (especially if you've read the other books in the Mageverse series), but on the whole a very satisfying read. Logan MacRoy is the only living child of King Arthur (yes, the King Arthur, who is also an immortal vampire) and Guinevere (an ancient witch). In order to join his parents in immortality and become a vampire himself, he has to have sex three times with a Maja (immortal witch led by Morgana Le Fay). But due to a traumatic experience in his youth, Logan wants to put off his transformation as long as possible. Logan is a little cardboard-y for me. Some characters can stay with you, but him I find a little flat and forgettable. Giada is a newly turned Maja sent to Logan, not to temp him into the change, but to protect him so that he lives long enough to have a choice. She's new to the Mageverse and despite being powerfully magical and beautiful, she's still held back by the LFG (Little Fat Girl) with the big brain that she used to be. Maybe it's because I have my own LFG in my background, but I liked Giada, though I couldn't figure out why she was chosen to protect Logan-she was determined, but made a couple of big boo-boos in the protection detail. She was kind of weak and sadly lacking in confidence. The relationship between these two seemed a little blah. There was some hot sensuality and some steamy shared dreams, but they had no real chemistry outside of that arena. Anyway, it was a quick, easy read. Nothing new, but enough action and steam to keep me going. **You probably don't need to have read all of the other Mageverse books to get what's going one, but you will definitely have to have read at least some of them. There are a lot of characters and references that won't make sense unless you know how the Maja and Majai (witch and vampire) relate to each other, and the characters twisted from the Camelot mythology.

The premise sounded silly to me, but the story and characters really drew me in and I stayed up all night reading it. I like the combination of old characters and modern times.
