Overview

Matilda, a twelfth-century Empress of the Holy Roman Empire and daughter of Henry I, is twenty-four years old and a widow. She returns to inherit her father's double realm of England and Normandy, but is promptly married against her will to Geoffrey, a minor continental nobleman. Absent from England at the time of her father's death, Matilda loses her throne to her cousin, Stephen, despite their ongoing and secret love affair.

For almost twenty years, anarchy reigns throughout the empire, and their illicit passion fluctuates between hatred and obsession. The only hope is the Empress' growing faith and their illegitimate son, whose rightful claim to the English throne could finally end the bloody, endless war.

In the vein of Philippa Gregory's The Other Boleyn Girl, Matilda Empress illuminates the real history of the early English monarchs, while exploring what is at stake when a strong woman at the center of great upheaval refuses to play by the rules laid out for her.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"The writing is superb and the descriptions so apt that I felt that I was in the novel alongside the empress. It is a gripping story from start to finish. If you enjoy a strong female lead, then this is the book for you!"—Historical Novel Society

If you are a fan of historical fiction and stories of strong women in history, you will love this book. The story of the Empress Matilda will outrage you on behalf of women everywhere. The men in Matilda's life continuously attempt to make her their pawn, but she thwarts them with whatever weapons she has available to her. As a woman in the 12th century, her weapons must consist only of her powers of persuasion and her cunning mind. This book will remind you that even the most powerful women are constrained by the time in which they live. It is also a story of love that is as doomed and it is toxic. This book will keep delighting you until the last page and you will find it hard to let Matilda go.

This fascinating story was told by an incredibly articulate author with a vivid 12th Century imagination . Although this genre doesn't usually interest me, this author is such an evocative and elegant writer that I was captivated by the dialogue. Can't wait to read her next book.
