Children's Literature - Carol LynchFans of the clever terrier will zoom through this adaptation of Alexandre Dumas's The Three Musketeers. Wishbone (or Stealth Dog, as he calls himself) leads readers on an adventure through France as a swordsman for King Louis XIII, battling the evil Cardinal Richelieu and his men. Duels, chases, trickery and narrow escapes fill every page as the story moves along at a quick pace. As always occurs in Wishbone's adventures, a parallel plot serves the purpose of bringing the classic story to a more realistic level. An "Official Dictionary" of French words and quick explanations of the historical context serve to keep the reader from getting lost. Wishbone's quick wit adds to the story, which always seems to build to a height of excitement, then switches over to the other story line. Although the black and white illustrations are not as satisfying as the photograph on the front cover, readers will eagerly devour this story in the same way that Wishbone devours meatloaf. Author's notes about Dumas and the original story present nuggets for students to draw on in later literature courses.
