Overview

Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I’d pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring.... until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something…unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marks me.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon’s touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I'm getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don't kill him first, that is.

Editorial Reviews

Jus Accardo
“Daemon and Katy are combustible…Obsidian is an action packed ride that will leave you breathless and begging for more.”
Mundie Moms
"Take some really hot, sizzling character chemistry, two stubborn love interests who know how to push each other's buttons, & add in some awesome out of this world characters and you've got the makings for one fabulously written story. If Daemon and Jace (Mortal Instrument Series) where to battle it out, it would be a close call on which character would win. Talk about a refreshing, Obsidian will give readers a whole new take on aliens. What Jennifer did with this story was absolutely awesome!"

I stared at the pile of boxes in my new bedroom, wishing the Internet had been hooked up. Not being able to do anything with my review blog since moving here was like missing an arm or a leg. According to my mom, “Katy’s Krazy Obsession” was my whole life. Not entirely, but it was important to me. She didn’t get books the way I did.

I sighed. We’d been here two days, and there was still so much left to unpack. I hated the idea of boxes sitting around. Even more than I hated being here.

At least I’d finally stopped jumping at every little creaking sound since moving to West “By God” Virginia and this house that looked like something straight out of a horror movie. It even had a turret—a freaking turret. What was I supposed to do with that?
Ketterman was unincorporated, meaning it wasn’t a real town.

The closest place was Petersburg—a two or three stoplight town near a few other towns that probably didn’t have a Starbucks. We wouldn’t get mail at our house. We would have to drive into Petersburg to get our mail.

Barbaric.

Like a kick in the face, it hit me. Florida was gone—eaten by the miles we’d traveled in Mom’s mad dash to start over. It wasn’t that I missed Gainesville, the weather, my old school, or even our apartment. Leaning against the wall, I rubbed the palm of my hand over my forehead.
I missed Dad.

And Florida was Dad. It was where he’d been born, where he met my mom, and where everything had been perfect… until it all fell apart. My eyes burned, but I refused to cry. Crying didn’t change the past, and Dad would’ve hated to know I was still crying three years later.
But I missed Mom, too. The Mom before Dad had died, the one who used to curl up on the couch beside me and read one of her trashy romance novels. It seemed like a lifetime ago. It certainly was half a country ago.

Ever since Dad died, Mom had started working more and more. She used to want to be home. Then it seemed like she wanted to be as far away as possible. She’d finally given up on that option and decided we needed to drive far away. At least since we’d gotten here, even though she was still working like a demon, she was determined to be more in my life.

I had decided to ignore my inner compulsive streak and let the boxes be damned today, when the smell of something familiar tickled my nose. Mom was cooking. This was so not good. I raced downstairs.

She stood at the stove, dressed in her polka-dotted scrubs. Only she could wear head-to-toe polka dots and still manage to look good. Mom had this glorious blonde hair that was stick straight and sparkling hazel eyes. Even in scrubs she made me look dull with my gray eyes and plain brown hair.

And somehow I ended up more… round than her. Curvy hips, puffy lips, and huge eyes that Mom loved but made me look like a demented kewpie doll.

She turned and waved a wooden spatula at me, half-cooked eggs splattering onto the stove. “Good morning, honey.”

I stared at the mess and wondered how best to take over this fiasco in the making without hurting her feelings. She was trying to do mom-stuff. This was huge. Progress. “You’re home early.”

“I worked almost a double shift between last night and today. I’m set to work Wednesday through Saturday, eleven till nine a.m. That leaves me with three days off. I’m thinking of either working part time at one of the clinics around here or possibly in Winchester.” She scraped out the eggs onto two plates and set the half-burned offering in front of me.
Yum. Guess it was too late for an intervention, so I rifled through a box resting on the far counter marked ‘Silverware & Stuff.’
“You know how I don’t like having nothing to do, so I’m going to check into them soon.”
Yeah, I knew.

And most parents would probably saw off their left arm before thinking of leaving a teenaged girl at home alone all the time, but not mine. She trusted me because I never gave her reason not to. It wasn’t for lack of trying. Well, okay, maybe it was.
I was kind of boring.

In my old group of friends in Florida, I wasn’t the quiet one, but I never skipped class, maintained a 4.0, and was pretty much a good girl. Not because I was afraid to do anything reckless or wild; I didn’t want
to add to Mom’s troubles. Not then…

Grabbing two glasses, I filled them with orange juice Mom must have picked up on her way home. “Do you want me to get groceries today? We have nothing.”
She nodded and spoke around a mouthful of eggs. “You think of everything. A grocery trip would be perfect.” She grabbed her purse off the table, pulling out cash. “This should be enough.”
I pocketed the money into my jeans without looking at the amount; she always gave me too much in the first place. “Thanks,” I mumbled.

She leaned forward, a twinkle in her eyes. “So… this morning I saw something interesting.”
God only knows with her. I smiled. “What?”
“Have you noticed that there are two kids about your age next door?”
My inner golden retriever kicked in and my ears perked up. “Really?”
“You haven’t been outside, have you?” She smiled. “I’d thought for sure you’d be all over that disgusting flower bed by now.”

“I plan on it, but the boxes aren’t unpacking themselves.” I gave her a pointed look. I loved the woman, but leave it to her to somehow forget that part. “Anyway, back to the kids.”
“Well, one is a girl who looks about your age, and there’s a boy.” She grinned as she stood. “He’s a hottie.”

A tiny piece of egg caught in my throat. It was seriously gross to hear Mom talking about boys my age. “Hottie? Mom, that’s just weird.”

Mom pushed off from the counter, picked up her plate from the table, and headed to the sink. “Honey, I might be old, but my eyes are still working fine. And they were really working earlier.”

I cringed. Double gross. “Are you turning into a cougar? Is this some sort of midlife crisis I need to be concerned about?”

Rinsing off her plate, she glanced over her shoulder. “Katy, I hope you’ll make an effort to meet them. I think it would be nice for you to make friends before school starts.” Pausing, she yawned. “They could show you around, yes?”

I refused to think about the first day of school, new kid and all. I dumped my uneaten eggs in the garbage. “Yeah, it would be nice. But I don’t want to go banging on their door, begging them to be my friend.”

“It wouldn’t be begging. If you put on one of those pretty sundresses you wore in Florida instead of this.” She tugged on the hem of my shirt. “It would be flirting.”
I glanced down. It said MY BLOG IS BETTER THAN YOUR VLOG. There wasn’t a thing wrong with it. “How about I show up in my undies?”

She tapped her chin thoughtfully. “That would definitely make an impression.”
“Mom!” I laughed. “You’re supposed to yell at me and tell me that’s not a good idea!”
“Baby, I don’t worry about you doing anything stupid. But seriously, make an effort.”
I wasn’t sure how to ‘make an effort.’

She yawned again. “Well, honey, I’m going to catch up on sleep.”

“All right, I’ll get some good stuff at the store.” And maybe mulch and plants. The flower bed outside was hideous.

“Katy?” Mom had stopped in the doorway, frowning.

“Yeah?”

A shadow flickered over her face, darkening her eyes. “I know this move is hard for you, especially before your senior year, but it was the best thing for us to do. Staying there, in that apartment, without him…

It’s time we started living again. Your dad would have wanted that.”

The lump in my throat I thought I’d left in Florida was back. “I know, Mom. I’m fine.”

“Are you?” Her fingers curled into a fist. The sunlight coming through the window reflected off the gold band around her ring finger.

I nodded quickly, needing to reassure her. “I’m okay. And I’ll go next door. Maybe they can tell me where the store is. You know, make an effort.”

“Excellent! If you need anything, call me. Okay?” Mom’s eyes watered on another long yawn. “I love you, honey.”

I started to tell her that I loved her, too, but she disappeared upstairs before the words were out of my mouth. At least she was trying to change, and I was determined to at least try and fit in here. Not hide in my room on my laptop all day like Mom was afraid I’d do. But mingling with kids I’d never met wasn’t my thing.

I’d rather read a book and stalk my blog comments.

I bit my lip. I could hear my dad’s voice, his favorite phrase encouraging me, “Come on, Kittycat, don’t be a bystander.” I squared my shoulders. Dad had never let life pass him by…
And asking about the nearest store was an innocent-enough reason to introduce myself. If Mom was right and they were my age, maybe this wouldn’t turn out to be such an epic fail of a move. This was stupid, but I was doing it. I hurried across the lawn and across the driveway before I chickened out.

Hopping onto the wide porch, I opened the screen door and knocked, then stepped back and smoothed the wrinkles out of my shirt. I’m cool. I got this. There is nothing weird about asking for directions.

Heavy footsteps came from the other side, and then the door was swinging open and I was staring at a very broad, tan, well-muscled chest. A naked chest. My gaze dropped and my breath sort of…stalled. Jeans hung low on his hips, revealing a thin line of dark hair that formed below his navel and disappeared under the band of the jeans.

His stomach was ripped. Perfect. Totally touchable. Not the kind of stomach I expected on a seventeen-year-old boy, which is how old I suspected he was, but yeah, I wasn’t complaining. I also wasn’t talking. And I was staring.

My gaze finally traveling north again, I noted thick, sooty lashes fanning the tips of his high cheeks and hiding the color of his eyes as he looked down at me. I needed to know what color his eyes were.

“Can I help you?” Full, kissable lips turned down in annoyance.

His voice was deep and firm. The kind of voice accustomed to people listening and obeying without question. His lashes lifted, revealing eyes so green and brilliant they couldn’t be real. They were an intense emerald color that stood out in vibrant contrast against his tan skin.

    Obsidian Rocked My World!

There are a few authors that I know I can always count on, my "Old Faithfuls". I can always count on their books leaving me satisfied, thrilled and usually wanting for more. I'm talking about authors such as Cassandra Clare, Jeri Smith-Ready, and a few others. Now, I am without a doubt adding Jennifer Armentrout to that list. To be honest, I went into Obsidian expecting another good book from Armentrout. What I didn't expect was for Obsidian to completely rock my world!

I don't even know how to start explaining my love for this book. Maybe the story. New girl in town meets hot, snarky guy. Sparks fly. Literally. Their being together is bad news. Like, deadly bad news. Seriously, in Obsidian, the author has taken the teen alien story and given it the coolest, most unique spin. I always strive for spoiler-free reviews. I love for the reader to be able to discover the intricate details of the story for themselves. So I'm not going into the nitty-gritty of the story. Just trust me when I say that as far as these books go, Obsidian is, to me, heads and shoulders above books such "I Am Number Four", which I really liked.

The characters in Obsidian are so vivid, alive. Katy, the main character, is...wait for it....A BLOGGER! Katy loves to read and blog. She checks her comments, her follower count and films IMM vlogs! That just felt like a huge shout-out to the book bloggers of the world and made me totally love Katy. But that's not all I loved about her. She is independent, self-reliant and does not take any crap off of people (or aliens!). She's quick to call Daemon out on his crap and flip him the bird as she's walking away. What's more, she is a loyal friend. Katy holds the fates of her new friends and never once considers giving them up, even when her own life is at risk.

One of Katy's new friends is Dee, the girl next door and sister to Daemon. Dee is completely,
squish-ably, adorable. She is like a breath of fresh, drama-free air. Especially when compared to her brother.

Daemon. Where to begin. Okay. You know those hot, sarcastic, can-be-a-real-jerk guys that we all know and love? For example, Jace from The Mortal Instruments series, or Adrian from Vampire Academy. Take everything you love, and what drives you crazy about those guys, and multiply that by 10. Or 20. Possibly 100. Are you picking up on what I'm saying here? For real. Daemon made me bonkers. Take a look at the cover of Obsidian. He's hot, right. Devastating. Who wouldn't want some of that? I wanted to like him. And he did have some nice moments in the first half of the book. But then he would do or say something that made me want to scream. He comes across as an arrogant, rude... ass hat. I actually tweeted Jennifer Armentrout at one point and said that "I want to punch Daemon in the throat and make out with him, simultaneously". Her response was, he would probably like that. I swear, I felt everything that Katy was feeling about him. I honestly wondered if there was any coming back for Daemon.

There was. Like many tortured heroes, Daemon's startling behavior is explained by a look at his past. Once you know why Daemon is so guarded and hostile, you can start to understand his actions. And why he is so desperate to hang on to what's left, especially his sister. The sibling love between Daemon in Dee was so beautiful, it just broke my heart.

Obsidian left me emotionally exhausted. I'm still reeling. And the ending? Evil

    A sexy thrill ride!

In case you didn't know, our main character Katy here is a book blogger. Awesomesauce, right? So I was hooked from the very first paragraph. She's a reader, she's from Gainesville FL, and she's sarcastic. Oh, and she sometimes fantasizes about punching people and considers being around children the perfect abstinence program. I liked her immediately. (Now don't get me wrong, I like children, as long as I can hand them back at the end of the day...)

Then there's Daemon. She really wasn't kidding about him being stab-worthy. In the first chapter of meeting him I already wanted to punch him in the teeth and gouge his eyes out with a rusty spoon. Frustrating. Insufferable. Asshat. Exactly the kind of guy we tell ourselves not to fall for and do it anyway (ladies, you know exactly what I mean). "Beautiful face. Beautiful body. Horrible attitude. The holy trinity of hot boys." I thought I was going to get mental whiplash from his mood swings. Yep, I wanted to punch him.

    Obsidian

I was expecting great things from Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout because her other novel, Half-Blood, was fantastic! I was only a teensy bit disappointed because it did not compare to Half-Blood.

Katy, the main character, is a book blogger. She does meme posts and makes "In My Mailbox" vlogs. I like that about a character because there is not any book I have read that incorporates a book blogger or blogging about books. However, I feel like that is not the main focus of the character. I also feel that it is not that important to know she is a book blogger.

Although I feel that it is not important to know Katy as a book blogger, she is hit with the truth of who her neighbors, her friends are. I think she handles it quite well. She does not really overreact, but she is curious about them. I think it wouldn't be so interesting if she was scared and ran away, instead she is interested in who they are. Even though she knows who and what they are, she is a reliability, however, that is how she and Daemon really know that they have feelings for each other.

I did not really like Daemon in the beginning because he was like a jerk. Then I felt that he was alright. And finally, I have a love-hate relationship with this character. The things that happen with him and Katy seem hot and cold, which made me develop the feeling of love and hate for this character.

The story itself is extremely intriguing. The aspect to it is very surprising. I did not expect to find out what or who Daemon and his sister, Dee are. It is different from the regular kind of paranormal-beings we usually read in books that has been published recently. I cannot give away the story, but trust me, you should read this!

Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout is unpredictable, surprising, and intriguing! I cannot wait for the next book! I know it will be even more amazing!

    more from this reviewer

    Electrifying and witty!

Witty, refreshing, and electrifying. With a brilliant set of characters, laughs, and sexual tension that will have you pulling your hair out, Obsidian is the perfect page turner that will have you begging for more.

Ever since I read Half-Blood (and fell in love with it), I've been obsessed with Jennifer's books. I stalked her blog, her twitter, her goodreads real hard. And with all my high hopes for her sequel to Half-Blood and her other books, Obsidian in no way disappointed me. Instead, I found myself in love with yet another of her series. This book is about Aliens, as you can tell from the official synopsis, and not only is it unique and new from other paranormal reads, it's a fascinating and beautiful type of alien. I really fell in love it and definitely wouldn't mind being a Luxen.

Next, I love how she touches on book blogging. That she intertwined it into her lead character's life. It's almost like a tribute to the blogging community and it gave me another thing to relate to Katy with. Katy is a strong lead character and I loved her for it. With her father dying, and her mother busying herself with work, yet still there for her daughter, Katy is very independent, and it's just one more thing I relate to. I don't have many close friends anymore like I used, and I'm constantly going places, and accomplishing tasks on my own and in my opinion it just makes me a stronger person, as we can see Katy is just that, a strong person. Katy deals with a lot through Obsidian, and she handles it all with bravery and her own little spice. :)

Other than Katy, we have the hot-and-cold-pure-sex-with-amazing-green-eyes Daemon, and his ball of energy twin sister Dee. So many times in a book, you turn the pages and live for those steamy scenes between the lead "couple", and I admit of course I ADORED those scenes (I mean how could you not! UNF), but in Obsidian I also admired that Jennifer was able to pull me into the other scenes as well, particularly with Dee. I loved Dee and her over-energetic self. She's the type of fun-loving girl who would light up a room just by being in it. She just wants a normal friend, and she's a good friend at that.

So, um, yeah.... Daemon. Can I just say the banter between Katy and Daemon had me feeling so much emotion. Sometimes I was laughing, others my jaw was dropping or wanting to hit one of them, and there were the times when I just wanted them to jump on each other... if you know what I mean ;). Daemon has the looks... the tanned, perfect sculpted body. The unruly wavy locks, with electric emerald eyes (which we all know is my favorite), but his personality is well hot-and-cold to say the least. Just when you think he's a complete jerk, he shows a softness. And just when you think the softness is there to stay, he flips the switch and he's back to the rude idiot that you cannot help but love any way.

There was so much I could rave about this book. I loved the role that every character played. I adored the dance and party scenes. I ADORED the lake scenes. Kitten... yeah, I thought that was funny yet cute. The alien lore was so creative and I really truly loved reading about it. I love Daemon's wittiness and arrogance and how Katy played right back along with him. I thought the writing was beautifully written. Finally, I love how Jennifer takes romance, laughs, real life situations, thrills, and paranormal and wraps it all up into one brilliant book.

Jennifer L Armentrout Has The Good Stuff And I Want It!

After the heartbreaking death of her father, Katy and her mother make the move to Ketterman, West Virgina, the town of one stop light, in hopes of moving on with their lives. Katy doesn't expect anything short of a relentlessly boring life in the middle of nowhere, that is until she meets the boy next door, Daemon. You see, Daemon's drop-dead gorgeous, tanned, with an added bonus of just about the most beautiful emerald colored eyes, but the boy is strictly hot and cold, constantly giving Katy emotional whiplash. What she didn't expect from the move, however, was to discover something literally out of this world about Daemon, his sister and his little circle of friends. Characters I Couldn't Help Loving Obsidian is a novel by Jennifer L Armentrout that I'd been highly anticipating since it's blurb was revealed. I was immediately pulled in by Obsidian's premise, promises of a Young Adult novel filled with something overwhelmingly extraterrestrial. Protagonist Katy was someone I could easily love and identify with. You see, Katy is a book blogger who runs her own little space called "Katy'z Krazy Obsession". It was disheartening, however, to see that she didn't think all that highly of herself, especially in concern to her adoration for reading and reviewing novels, labeling herself as a book crazed nerd. Despite that, though, I found that she was a character that many readers would find themselves easily connecting with, I know I did. Daemon, on the other hand, was undeniably handsome, especially with those piercing emerald eyes. Despite his Greek god looks, Daemon was very provocative, which I loved, and presented a hot and cold attitude, which I didn't love. In addition, I also found myself connecting greatly with Dee, Daemon's twin sister. She was a breath of fresh air, bubbly, outgoing and respectful. Close Calls Brushes with death, mystery, unyielding suspense and surprising discoveries - that's what I found in Obsidian. Obsidian featured quite a swift pace that wasn't lagging in the least in the progression of the novel, though thankfully it didn't overly rush the storyline into a mindless dribble. The plot itself was incredibly thick with detail and background stories. In particular I really enjoyed learning more about Daemon and his past, it was incredibly interesting and unique all on itself. I also loved the added blogger habits and terms mentioned through Katy, it was icing on the cake, especially for book bloggers who I find will enjoy this novel very much! Finally - the romance. The developing romance was immediately predictable but I found myself greatly enjoying it's torturous and heartwarming moments. Jennifer L Armentrout's wording and imagination definitely had a way of making my heart skip a beat, not to mention falling in love with her characters. With a unique and entrancing story, Obsidian was action packed, dramatic, captivating and exciting - I Am Number Four has some SERIOUS competition!

I’m a huge science fiction fan and alien’s are alway

I’m a huge science fiction fan and alien’s are always so prominent in science fiction. For me aliens hit a high note with the X-Files in the 90’s, and another probably less known alien based tv show called Roswell - this one in particular is a dead ringer for Obsidian. But for a while there I think female teenagers equated aliens to be these slime covered green weird looking guys associated with greasy basement dwelling nerds, conspiracy theorists and a subject to be avoided in general, rather than a subject with high entertainment value. As it is, aliens aren’t very prominent as YA novel topics, I can’t think of any others, can you?

So I’m going to start here by applauding Armentrout for successfully bringing a not commonly tread subject so successfully to life in the YA category because Obsidian was that freaking awesome.

Both the new and old cover feature the now famous (and real life couple) Pepe as Daemon with strikingly eerie green eyes and Sztella as the absolutely gorgeous Katy. Although I do like the old cover version more since we actually get to see Sztella’s face.

When the story starts we’re introduced to Katy, who is the new girl in the one horse town of Ketterman in West Virginia. We get a quick run down of who she is, and what she’s doing there. What I really enjoyed was Armentrout’s nod to the book blogging community by making Katy a book blogger herself, and inserting the little joys of book blogging such as memes and the excitement of books in the mail.

Initially Katy is a quiet person who is more reserved and prefers the company of books, but when looking through her perspective you can see that she’d really like to change that and with this determination in mind she decides to go out into the world to meet new people… and what better place to start than with her neighbours?

Upon reading the first 5 pages…and as soon as we meet Daemon in his completely necessary state of undress I was hooked and I couldn’t put it down until it was done a few hours later. Armentrout’s style of writing is casual, upbeat, deliciously detailed and she writes some of the sharpest dialogue that I’ve seen in a while . It all works together in perfect harmony to create rich characters, settings, tense action scenes and the aura of mystery surrounding the aliens.

Katy’s character is easy enough to follow along, she’s smart with a healthy dose of skeptical (I mean aliens really? :D) but when things get weird she notices and when the truth comes out she at least accepts it with some fascination instead of running off in hysterics. What I thoroughly enjoyed was watching this struggle between shy Katy and a more bold Katy that wants to take the challenge of Daemon head on and how she eventually forms into a stronger unified Katy that I’m so excited to see in the sequel Onyx!

Oh Daemon…I’m pretty sure anyone syllabically named in relation to Daemon (I’m looking at you Damon Salvatore from The Vampire Diaries, specifically the TV version) is destined to be a dark, broodingly hot, with a wicked sense of humour but infuriating character that is lethal to the bone and is doggedly determined to protect his family no matter the cost to anyone else. That extreme loyalty is what gets me every time, no matter how much of an ass they are at every turn I end up absolutely head over heels loving the character because I love seeing the flashes of good and badass as the situations progress and aren’t these types of guys just more interesting than a perfectly good boy?

The secondary characters provided such a well rounded support cast, from Dee’s adorable longing for friends, to Katy’s mom - who probably is the coolest mom ever, to highly entertaining jealous catty girls, gossip fuelled townies and dangerous villain’s that will have you looking around in hopes of finding Men in Black, or a hot alien to save you.

I loved how Armentrout crafted every detail to a purpose, with seemingly small things that explode back into your face as a huge secret in the overall plot. She’s also got the alien explanation rationalizing to humans down to a science, and I bow down to her sexual tension mastery - she takes these two right up to the edge of a cliff, pushes them over and at the last second grabs them and saves their lives, the rush is both infuriating and addictive. The explanations for the aliens, and their abilities were corny I thought at first, but Armentrout does an amazing job weaving an intricate story web, and making these aliens believable to me through some heart stopping action scenes.

What I do know for certain is that at the end of Obsidian I was having serious Daemon withdrawal issues (and still am) and all I want is to get a hold of Onyx to see what happens next!

Well, I wasn't going to tell you they were aliens, but the produ

Well, I wasn't going to tell you they were aliens, but the product description did it for me. So now that is out-of-the-way. This is your typical YA book, angsty teens, love/hate relationships, and something forcing the two to work together and work through their mutual attraction. I have heard others relate it to Twilight, and not in a positive fashion. I can see where they are coming from. However, I disagree. The heroine, Katy, has a brain in her head, and is just fine being left alone. She doesn't feel lost without Daemon. These characters all actually have DEPTH and understandable MOTIVATIONS. They are not just magically attracted.

Daemon, however much I get his motivations, is a giant jerk. He is that super sexy, boy next door, with no filter between his brain and his mouth. Well, that's not entirely true, he knows exactly what he is saying and what effect it will have on Katy. But haven't we all had "that guy" that we were attracted to that wasn't exactly the nicest? If you say no, you are lying to yourself. But that's fine with me!

Katy doesn't just fawn all over him. She fights back. SHE IS NOT A PUSHOVER. Thank goodness. she gets back at him when and how she is able to. That scene in the cafeteria, I felt for her, and was then laughing at everyone else, even as I continued to feel protective of her. The one thing I didn't understand was her immediate friendship to Dee. She is just too bubbly and needy for me ... but maybe it is me because I wouldn't be friends with her from the get-go; too much energy for me. I am way too lazy for that. All in all, this book gets a solid 4 stars from me, and I will eagerly await the next installment, Onyx.

I read Half-Blood by Jennifer and absolutely knew I had to read

I read Half-Blood by Jennifer and absolutely knew I had to read Obsidian and let me just tell you.. This book was AMAZING! So funny, so hot, so.... alien. I read this book in one sitting and when it was over I was so disappointed! I wanted to keep reading more Daemon and Katy. I loved reading their love/hate relationship and had me laughing out loud so many times. Katy is a strong independent girl and I love that about her. She doesn't take crap from no one, especially Daemon. And Daemon, oh my lordy he is one sexy , hot, smart ass with some alien alien mojo. I loved him and his attitude and I understand why he has to be careful with falling in love with a human because of what happened to Dawson. Oh and the fact that Daemon calls her Kitten has me melting to a puddle on the ground. Oh. Em. Gee.
The story line in this book is great and thought out so well it made this book so much more enjoyable. I loved the flow and writing style. Even though some of the main characters are aliens these guys are all pretty relatable. It was awesome that Katy was a book blogger. The action scenes are intense and awesome. I seriously can't say enough good stuff about this book so seriously just go pick up a copy and read it. You will NOT regret it. It's awesome and it's got hot aliens. What's there not to like? ;)

    Blown Away!

I wasn't sure what to think when I found out this book was about aliens even though you could make a case that mine are too. Some of my goodreads friends had recommended Jennifer as an author and I checked her out. I ordered the sample from Amazon and bought the book once I was finished. Katy is such an engaging main character. When she sees Daemon for the first time, I laughed for hours at Katy's idea of what makes up the holy trinity of hot boys. He is just such a jerk, but you can't help but like him, and wonder what the heck he is about. I have to say this series is original and so far one of my keepers. It gets five shining stars from me, and I can't wait for Onyx to come out.

So if you find yourself looking for a book that will suck you in and not let you go even when you are finished reading, check out Obsidian. You might just find yourself the latest Jennifer L. Armentrout fan.

There was a game of tug of war going on in my mind when it came

There was a game of tug of war going on in my mind when it came to deciding whether or not to give Obsidian a try. I think its risky to read other’s reviews because sometimes their opinion can sway you. In the case of Obsidian, I had been reading dozens of raving reviews talking about how amazing it was. However, on the other hand, I also saw a few reviews that steamed with negative feelings towards Obsidian because they felt like the story wasn’t too-original. Some even believed that the story was “ripped” from a TV show called Roswell (one of my favorite all-time shows) which also featured angst-y, teenage aliens on earth, who try to stay off the radar by fitting in. There was a lot of inner-debate, but when it comes down to it; I’m really glad I gave Obsidian a chance. Even though there is some similarities to Roswell, Obsidian branches off and forms its own identity. It flows well with a good mix of action, humor, and lust.

I’m always stressing how I need good, multifaceted characters in order to fully love a book. Obsidian for the most part, delivers. Katy our heroine is so dynamic and relatable. She’s got a good mix of snark, geek, and heroism. She’s a book blogger who spends a great deal of her time reading and reviewing books and trolling other blogs by participating in book memes. I thought this element was a cute shout out to all book bloggers and a refreshing story-quirk because I’ve never read about any literary characters who are book bloggers. In the beginning of the book you start getting this mental picture of a “geeky” girl who blogs, reads comic books, and so forth, but by the time she has her first run in with the hotty next door you mentally take a step and think “whoa”. Daemon, the literal boy next door may seem gorgeous and exotic but the minute he opens his mouth Katy’s instantly brought back to reality. Daemon isn’t just snarky, he’s a jerk who seems to dislike Katy for no reason. Right from the get-go he’s rude and offensive, which in turn brings out Katy’s true nature. Katy isn’t the type of girl to sit there and verbally get bashed. She lashes out, letting Daemon know she’s not a pushover who’ll take his crap. I really liked and respected Katy for standing up for herself because it showed how strong she truly is. This especially rings true later on. When it comes to family and friends and their potential endangerment, Katy is brimming with courage-leading to her need to protect them no matter the costs.

I was a little dissapointed with Dee’s presentation throughout the novel. Dee is Daemon’s younger sister (by a few minutes) and Katy’s other next-door neighbor. Although Daemon appears to want nothing to do with Katy, Dee is the opposite. Right from the beginning, Dee befriends Katy and in doing so, welcomes her to the neighborhood. It’s hard to accurately describe Dee. When I think of her I just think “sunny”. She’s so warm, and kind, and basically tries to enjoy life to the fullest. I believe that Dee is really the bridge that brings Katy and Daemon closer. Besides that aspect, she didn’t really have any defining or big moments. She has a lot of scenes in the beginning but towards the middle of the book she’s “out of town” a lot. I felt like she was more of a tool used to link Daemon and Katy versus a good secondary character. I really would like to see more of her in the coming book(s) because I feel like she has a lot to offer. Although her presence brings out the softer and more-vulnerable side of Daemon, I think she has the ability to play a bigger role in the overall story.

There were a lot of action scenes where we got to see Daemon in all his alien power-glorious-ness and some where Katy kicks some butt, too. The dialogue between those two are scorching. Whether their having a deep and meaningful discussion or trading insults back and forth, their chemistry is blazing. Daemon may think himself bad*ss with his snarky attitude and bad boy image but Katy time and again, sets him straight. She is really a force to reckoned with, a true match for Daemon.

Overall I give Obsidian a 4/5 rating. The writing was very clean and captivating. I fell instantly in love with Katy, praising her for standing up for herself, and swooning right along with her when she witnessed those rare-Daemon vulnerable moments. It’s very easy to jump right in and get caught up with this story.

    Awesome!

This book exceeded my expectations.. while parts were a little rough, the overall idea and execution were very well done.
A book about a hot alien? Heck yeah!
There are some questions I still have, which threaten to push it to 4 stars... but, the fact that I was glued to my nook for the day and a half it took to read (a girl's gotta work) keeps it at a 5 :)
I will say, after reading her other book 'Half Blood' I was a little leary of reading 'Obsidian' but, I would recommend this to anyone who finds tortured, sometimes grumpy, often times annoying, but always underlyingly loveable characters to be their ideal male character. Haha. I don't know why, but I love 'em!

    Wonderful Story :D

OMG I sooooo Love this book :) It is a love & hate relationship that brings this book to life. This book is a YA Paranormal Romance :D. How could you go wrong with hot aliens living in your town *drowl*. Poor thing, she doesn't know what is going on with her heart and emotions, he just keeps being a jerk but then turns into a total sweetheart, talk about mood swings God does he have them, lmao. Yeah I wanted to punch him many times while reading this book, but then again I couldn't stop laughing, God these two are so.... made for each other. Their love & hate relationship brings out many life and death situations, but they pull through everything nicely :) Love the ending ;) Hahaha it had me rolling with laughter. So can not wait for the next book :D

    Different and entertaining

I liked the unique storyline and background. Plot was well thought out. Hero and Heroine go back and forth a little too much with passive aggresive tendancies that seem over the top. Hero though sounding attractive... really did come off as a jerk even with his history. I will read the next one because of the welldefined background and unique concept.

    Great Read!

I have to admit, it takes a lot for me to really enjoy a young adult book. There are only a handful of authors that I *really* enjoy. If you like paranormal young adult at all you should check this out, and even if you just like adult paranormal you should check it out also. I was really drawn into the book from the start. I could actually *feel* the emotions from the characters. I will be anxiously awaiting the next installment.

    Obsidian is OUTWORLDLY

I loved Jennifer book Half-Blood, and I had high hopes about Obsidian and you know what? She didn't let me down. Obsidian is so good, It's outworldly.
This book is full of mysteries, action, and romantic tension. Obsidian a real page turner, which kept me going until the middle of the night.
I couldn't wait to reach the end to get the answers I was looking for and yet I was dreading the end as I knew I would have to wait for book 2.
The chemistry between the characters is really one of a kind. Katy and Daemon are very well written, you can feel the tension building between them. I truly believe that Jennifer has a gift for giving dimensions to her characters.
Daemon can be seen as the archetype of the bad boy and yet he has so many layers that makes him so real.human (pun intended) and smoking hot .
Katy is very lovable; she is so easy to identify with. She is a nice girl but she has some back bones and one hell of a mouth. I really love Katy and can't wait to read what she will face next. She might be the human in the story she is very strong, I don't; think Jennifer could write weak lead female character and I have to give her a major kudos for that.
The secondary characters also have dimension and are not only filler for which I would give Jennifer bonus points ('bonus points' will make you laugh once you read the book..there is a sense)
The storyline itself is very original; Forget about werewolves, vampires and fairies..Jennifer's aliens are in the house and they are HOT! There are only a few books today that talk about Aliens (the only one I can only think of is I'm number 4) and this one differs completely. The plot and style is great. The story flows nicely and even if it's late on a Sunday night you and as you go along you can't stop reading it's very addictive!
Jennifer also has the gift to share emotions, so many books today are empty of real emotions but this book made me laugh, frustrated me (damn you Daemon!) but also made my heart race!
Obsidian is a very strong start of a series and I am now dying for book two. The book doesn't end in a sadistic cliffhanger but you still have questions, a curiosity to satisfy and a love for the characters that need to be fed. In conclusion all I have to say is READ IT!!
